Photography?

I’ve had the 6S. Currently using 11 Pro Max which is a heap better imo, especially in low light
I’m sure it is & when the self destruct chip kicks in on my old phone I’ll have to get something newer, but I suspect it’ll cost me slightly more than £9.50/month including my 6 GB Data. 😄. I keep telling my kids & our grandkids to hang onto their phones & go sim only, but the marketing men seem to have got them in their pocket & they must have the latest. 🙄

There’s the problem. Phone cameras have improved so much, other proper cameras have lagged behind. Mostly, the best pictures are taken by SLRs shooting in Raw with pro lenses, low aperture range, decent stable tripod, shutter release - but all that’s way over £500 and is a pain to carry around
It's partly down to the computational element as well. Companies like Google have incredible resources to bring to bear on the processing of an image.

The camera companies have been left behind in this regard.

My (relatively) cheap pixel phone does some kind of voodoo on pictures. The lens is average but what happens after the picture is taken is incredible. It's almost frightening how it instantly 'tunes' images and almost always does a really good job.

Like you say, if you've got decent kit, the post processing is important as well and phones have come a long, long way in handling that process themselves where as the cheaper compacts are playing catch up with the tech giants.

It's a shame as it is seeing specialists struggle but it makes sense that Apple/Google etc understand the AI needed far better than say, Canon who for years have focussed much more on hardware.
