Photography?

Wow! That's incredible. Thank you for sharing that. My better half will also love that, she's all about stone circles and old stuff.

Took this one on a speedboat in Abu Dhabi with an old shitty mobile phone camera..... There has been no filtering or tampering.... I wouldn't know how to 😁

Anyone into taking pictures?

With the new fancy board, would a photography thread be a nice distraction from arguing and missing the football? Nowt fancy, phone pics or mad keen SLR stuff, whatever, no need to be an expert or owt...

Anyone up for that?
Could show ye photos from around Limerick & Co Clare

Isn't there something in just capturing a good photo and the moment though?
There really is, but sometimes the camera doesn't get that moment. I used to be completely 'no editing' but this one is a good example of where I've edited and the result is much closer to 'the moment' I noticed than the actual original picture, where the shadows/light weren't prominant and I'd been sat on the hillside, just watching the light for a few minutes and being in awe of the way it changed the landscape below.

I'm probably using editing to compensate for a lack of skill with the actual camera but sometimes, I see a picture and I know what I want to get out of it later. It's just the new version of pissing about in the darkroom I guess. I am aware to an extent that it's not a skill like it used to be, but that's as true of so many things. Anyone can record a song, anyone can mix like a DJ and so on. I love playing about with a picture and it's usually to try and capture what it is that made me take it and convey that. (which sounds pretentious, but it's for me - so that picture then captures that 'moment' when I look at it again in years to come.

I've been trying to be more abstract and that recently. Been stuck in similar places for so long that I'm trying to notice stuff beyond the things I've already seen.

These are my favourite recent ones.

I'm not against editing by any means. For example....your picture are visually pleasing to say the least. I don't have skill myself when it comes to taking photos... I just get luck every once in a thousand clicks!

Oh aye. I've a million shit ones for those 5 decent ones...!

Hey Photographers - can I have your advice please?

I'd like to buy a compact camera that can take better photographs than an iPhone. I don't want an SLR, (too heavy), or interchangeable lenses, (too cumbersome), but I'd like some zoomability and sharp pictures.

Budget, no more than £500.

Any suggestions?

Hmmm.

I'm not sure.

Phone cameras are absolutely superb now for the money. I've not given any great thought to a compact but I used too have a Sony Bridge and to be honest, aside from the zoom in the lens, I don't think it did anything my phone didn't. When I had a look at the specs properly, the sensor size was the same as a phone so, it's not surprising really that it didn't especially out perform a phone.

Manual controls were handy but it didn't justify the price tag to me.

So, yeah, not much help but not a Sony Bridge!

Also, how old is the iphone?

I've got a £300 Google phone and it takes astonishing pictures. Not quite a high end full frame DSLR, but I really couldn't ask for more. If I'd paid £300 for the camera alone, I think I'd be happy.

There's genuinely some stunning camera phones now and mine is probably a good bit behind some of the best.

What I mean is, is a phone upgrade an option?

Thanks, td. I tired of upgrading phones a few years ago for little benefit, and I'm sticking with my iPhone7 until it conks out. Besides, I dislike the rigmarole of taking pictures on the phone - waving a flimsy object in front of your face - trying to press the button, only to find I had part of my finger over the lens. 😠😄

What's your current outfit?

Since I started this thread I've bought a new camera.

I was using an ancient Canon eos350 DSLR (can pick them up for about £30 with lens)

When that finally bit the dust after 17 years of good service... I bought a second hand Canon 80d which I absolutely love. Got it body only and went for an 18-135 lens as it's much more versatile than the 18-55 you get as standard.

Tbh, the pics I got out of the ancient Canon were good, it just was slow, getting pics off it was a hastle and it didn't have a good autofocus or image stabilization.

I'd say, the two best pics I've taken with either camera aren't that much different, but the new one takes more good ones, especially in low light, where the old one really, really struggled.

Take a look at the Panasonic Lumix bridge camera range. Also Sony and Canon have some excellent options. They all do high quality video as well as stills.

Things that might affect your choice are:

- do you want a flexible (flippable) lcd screen at the back - a bit like on a video recorder - I recommend this?
- do you want to add your own flash (most have it built in, I've never bothered with anything more high end)?
- weight and size (you can check this in the spec)
- zoom - most have outrageous zoom levels but you start to lose quality pretty quickly as it's only using a proportion of the same sensor and it also becomes harder to keep the camera steady
- any extras you can get in a bundle purchase - e.g. cards, bag etc.
- will they take a filter on the lens? - this will protect it and is really helpful if you're careless like me.

I reckon you can get a lot new or second hand via a dealer for your budget.

Marks zoom to sensor advice is very sage. That's what I got wrong when I bought the sony. Yeah, it zoomed like mad, but the pictures were rubbish!

That's why you really need a full frame camera for mad zooming.

I agree with a lot of what said above about taking photos, Its a snapshot of a moment that I would like to relive in the future.... I just use my Samsung S10 phone & sometimes google photos editing, so very little other than some cropping. Best thread on AVFTT, love some but not all the photos, but that's what makes an awesome photo for some, an average pic for others, its in the eye of the beholder see??

What is going on in this photograph? It's Jill and Joe Biden visiting former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn in their house in Georgia. The Bidens tower over the Carters in their miniature chairs. It's an official photograph released by the Jimmy Carter library so it's not been doctored.

I hope I don't shrink that much in my 90s. 😄

Some kind of weird lens that magnifies the edges or the photograph curled up while copying it?

It’s probably a wide angle lens & they can distort things a little.
On the subject of cameras I’ve got a Canon entry level DSLR but I don’t take it with me unless for something specific so most of my photos are from my iPhone 6S which is quite old, but in most reasonably lit locations you can get a decent shot. The massive advantage is most of us have our phones with us at all times. On the subject of editing & I’m certainly no expert but the better the original then less or no editing at all is needed.

Ive to take the photos first lol too lazy today

Come on you, BBC 14 day weather forecast says it’s gonna be quite nice in that there Limerick on Thursday. I can only imagine how tough things might have been for you over the past few weeks but I want my fix of County Clare

There’s the problem. Phone cameras have improved so much, other proper cameras have lagged behind. Mostly, the best pictures are taken by SLRs shooting in Raw with pro lenses, low aperture range, decent stable tripod, shutter release - but all that’s way over £500 and is a pain to carry around

Looks like quite a deep seat that dips lower at the back. Effectively your only seeing half her legs from the knees down. Does look weird. Or she could be a mannequin he uses to scare kids

I’ve had the 6S. Currently using 11 Pro Max which is a heap better imo, especially in low light
