Players who had great debuts for Pool

With the permanent signing of Owen Dale announced yesterday, and his best performance for us being on his debut against reading, it got me thinking about other players who’ve started well for us.

The first one that always comes to mind is Marlon Harewood

I remember the Nigel Walker one, at the old Northampton ground that used to be open at one side, was it also used for cricket? Foggy night match, he was absolutely on fire that night.

Remember it well. Not many of us there but brilliant night. Bennys stretched their legs after too😉

I remember when Seamus Coleman joined on a desperate last minute loan because Eardley was injured....
He was a class above even then...I remember someone going on about a 'kid' filling in in for Eardley
But by the end of the match they were hoping Eardley was going to be off for a long period....

Joe Hart at Huddersfield
Remember having radio Lancs on driving there and thinking we were fecked- our replacement Goalie was going to be a kid from Man City reserves. (Typical Oyston I thought - cheap option)

It was his speed of distribution that shocked me, and willingness to come off his line for crosses. What a debut

did Garry Brabin not score a screamer on his first game at bloomfield road (hull seems to spring to mind,or was that who we signed him from)72 years old now and my memory isnt what it used to be🤣.

Yes, away at Swindon we won 6-2. Circa 1986

Also Nigel Walker away at Northampton did the same I think a few years earlier.
no he scored 1 at swindon A.Dyer (37', 39'), M.Taylor (45', 48'), A.Mayes (74'), P.Stewart (77') then hat trick next game against wigan at home

Wayne Harrison scored 2 belters from outside the box on his debut.

If I remember correctly, he arrived with Dave Bamber from the University football team.

Bamber went onto greater things in football, but Wayne didn't progress his footballing career (as far as I know).
I saw him in Blackpool a few years later, so he might still live in the area.

Wayne Harrison's first touch in league football was a Cruyff turn in midfield. I recall it vividly.

I remember that one, chip over the advancing keeper to get us back in the game, unfortunately we were already 2-0 down. (Ended up 4-1)

Didn't stop us going mental on that grass bank away end though. Massive away following that night, went home disappointed.

Happened a lot in those days.
Do you remember Potts, us signing Larry May from Sheff.Wed for about a 100 grand which was a huge fee for a lower division side at the time and he failed his medical?.

Jeff Chandler
Eamonn O'Keefe
Luke Varney
Shayne Lavery
All 4 had good games and scored on their league debuts for Pool 👍

I disagree, I thought he had a poor debut as I remember texting my Everton supporting mate at the time saying he was shit.

That was his only shit game though.

Sorry mate, no recollection recollection of that one at all. I'm sure your right though. I can remember us nearly spending big money on a striker called Lowe once upon a time . Wigan player i think. Never really splashed the cash did we. Our record signing was Bobby Doyle in the late 70s and that stood for years. Actually saw him on the Big Match Revisited last week playing for Portsmouth in 1981, so he didn't play for us for too long after we spent all that poke on him.

Wes Hoolahan - We were in League 1, losing at home to Championship side Barnsley, in the league cup, and this player we'd signed from Livingston called Wes Hoolahan, was brought on with about 15 minutes to play.

He ran their defence ragged.

Yes I remember David Lowe,he would of been a fantastic signing but we couldn't agree a fee with Wigan and Ipswich Town came in before it went to a tribunal and gazumped us.

Sier sene, possibly the wrong spelling but he came on as a late substitute a few years ago, legs like whittled sticks & tripped himself up at least twice, a great debut for the wrong reasons, it was the most entertaining debut I’ve ever seen for comedy value
