Post office scandal compensation

Government compensation

Just seen the Government have offered £600,000 in a take it or leave it ultimatum for those post office shopkeepers who were wrong accused and convicted of stealing from the post office, some of whom spent time in prison before they discovered it was a computer error.

For me £600k seems like an insult for the stress and false accusations and even prison had caused these totally innocent people. Thoughts?

Completely agree.

It should be a minimum of £1m - if only for the tokenism and a full pension (whatever that is) for life from now.

The least affected had their livelihoods and reputations ruined - far too many had much, much worse.

And the shareholders and managers should have zero dividends and bonuses until it is paid in full (assuming it's the private bit of the post service which I don't fully understand).

Some of the people are now gone... the whole sorry episode has been nothing but a shambles. Like the bankers and other incompetent (corrupt) people in high places nothing done to them. Still got the mega bonuses and still drawing gold plated pensions.
Shame on everyone involved in this sordid chapter.

I remember Vine doing a piece on this on his wireless show a few months ago talking to some victims and their lawyer, nowhere near enough compensation for what they suffered. Pretty sure those that knew about the glitch in the system were never punished either.

At least one of the accused committed suicide and several have died since.
Some have spent time in prison which is also financially devastating for them and therefore I don't that a take or leave it approach is the correct one from HM government.
It all looks a bit like the Windrush scandal where the government have added insult to injury with rather pathetic offers.

If you had lost your job and future earning potential and pensions, home, reputation, health and in some cases family and freedom, would you think it reasonable? I don't.
Even moreso when the board and senior managers were paying themselves huge salaries and bonuses and some of them knew there were problems with the IT system and they still encouraged criminal convictions and draconian HR actions when huge doubts were raised.

Let's not hold back here lets name at least one name in the public domain:

Meet Paula Vennells: As chief executive officer of the Post Office, she presided over an organisation that covered up the prosecutions of hundreds of innocent postmasters for fraud, yet Vennells left in 2019 with a bonus of almost £400k and a CBE..

Puts a £600k pay off into perspective don't it

Reward for failure as per usual.

One of the worst stories I've heard, the testimony from the victims was heartbreaking. Treated as common criminals and the shame that this brought and to boot were financially obliterated. Horrendous

Unbelievable scandal, government bodies biggest gangsters in town. Only if you end up on the wrong side will you understand.

Shouldn't the Government be looking at the person/people who actually instigated this diabolical event?
Lives have been ruined, people have died, surely someone is culpable?
I used to go to all the Sub Post Offices when I worked at the GPO. Many very nice people.
I even met my 1st wife when she worked at Marton Sub PO in Oxford Square.
