Priority Number One this summer

I think we have to be realistic and realise we need an entire rebuild of the squad. From a commanding Captain, to a proven goalscorer, to a regular Number One Keeper, to a midfielder with some height and presence through to at least two new strikers. Big job for whoever comes in.

I think we will keep Groot in the summer. With him and Madine, we have ticked the 2 target men options (one on the bench please not both in the team). We need that pacy goal scorer x 2 to compliment. Brings us back to Nuttall unfortunately, if he can't play alongside the target man, then not sure what his role is going to be?

Priority number one is a good manager/coach appointment. Players can improve significantly when they are being well organised and motivated, and their confidence is developed. And teams improve when this happens and when the right signings are identified and brought in.

Moore and Heneghan will need replacing. Ronan and Dewsbury-Hall too. And the forward line needs a complete rebuild, unless the new gaffer can work some magic with Madine and Nuttall.

Hardie?

As voy says, the obvious is a decent manager/coach. On the pitch however priority 1 is a midfielder who can run the show and bring some creativity and vision in. Until we fill that role we'll go nowhere.

We do need that, but we are also going to need a new central defence and a new forward line.

Simon Sadler is discovering that building a competitive team, even in League 1 is expensive. We probably will lose Gnando, and Madine is not the Championship-level striker we need. They don't come cheap and it won't be easy to entice one to our club.

We're losing Ronan and KDH, Spearing is advancing in years, so we need a new midfield.

What else is there? Oh yes, the defence! We need a new one of those too!

I hope Mr Sadler has deep pockets.

Simon Sadler is actually discovering that building an uncompetitive team, even in League 1, is expensive.

We could actually have spent less and done better. We were in fact doing better before we spent a load of money in January.

In other words, shop wisely, and plan well, and appoint the right people to make key decisions. You'd have to question Ben Mansford and Tommy Johnson's start to their roles at the club. Cos it's gone from a side lacking a bit of quality but sitting in the play off positions to freefall, chaos and loads of money chucked away since they took up their positions. Surely Sadler can see that?

Good job we're not on the Championship then. Give Madine service and he'll score goals

What we need is a manager who chooses the players, nit a scout and board member to do it and feed the player into the squad. Scouts, yes, great, but FFS let the manager get who he wants in. We practically need a total rebuild of the squad because it is average at best.

Someone from the Championship will sign Gnando, whilst I don't think he is at that level, a free transfer striker who will end up with 20 goals is highly unlikely to stay. Back to the thread title question, a lot is the answer. We need a goal scorer with pace, a midfielder with presence and Ronan and Dewsbury-Hall back for a full season. Most importantly a bloody good manager we are all behind and can get the best out of every player.

Taking the OP at their question centre mid is where I would start, but I agree we could start with pretty much any point on the pitch. Whoever our new manager is will (hopefully) have his own view on where to start with building a decent side.

I'm struggling to think of one position, except left back (McDonald) where we won't need to upgrade if we want to get out of this division.

Well my priority would be to appoint Evo now.
Then he can keep who he wants and bring in who he needs to play his system.
We could also do with making a real effort to sign up the best of the loan players, if at all possible.
Somehow I don’t expect that will be the case.
