Private Eye : Immigration

I was reading in the Sunday Times (I think) last week that Sunak has made immigration a top personal priority and that Braverman is effectively sidelined on the issue (presumably because they know she isn't up to the job).

He's got a big job on his hands. Private Eye are saying today that in the year before the Tories took office, net immigration was running at 242,000 per annum. It is now 504,000 - how many years after Brexit?

Thank God we've "taken back control" of our borders. The numbers have doubled and we are still - somehow - chronically short of the care workers, nurses and doctors who used to come from abroad to plug the skills gaps that we couldn't. And still can't.

Some saying the figurre is more like 200k if you take out what are possibly one off figures for Hong Kong and Ukraine? I suppose these are people who are unlikely to be working, and particularly not in the sectors you mentioned.
The last thing we need right now though is HMG trying to artificially squeeze down the annual immigration figures, and thereby preventing the beneficial immigration we need for our labour market, just to provide suitable overall figures for an election.

Looking at net immigration gives a bit of a false perspective because Brits no longer have an easy way to migrate to Europe and I think the figure was running at about 300,000 per annum migrating to EU countries prior to brexit

I see the Metropolitan elite have got the latest issue of PE whilst in the deprived north we are still waiting for the Royal Mail to deliver.

That doesn’t really stack up Robbie, unless the migrants in are feckless and job shy as we have chronic staff shortages in many industries.

That said. If 400k of them are sat in hotels or barracks awaiting processing then yup maybe.

Never had you down as a UKIP supporter Robbie. Clearly, you’re right and, as Nigel always warned, we can’t trust the Tories to do Brexit properly. As you point out, it looks like they’ve been content to let the wrong sort in who can’t even do what is needed here. A couple of decent cities-worth each year.

Why did the nation vote for something that stopped young nurses from Spain and Portugal coming to work in the UK!!
An act of national self harm that is unforgivable when you look at the sorry state of British nursing now!!

I’m sure the nurses from these countries are needed in their own country. You know - the country where they were born, educated and trained. Why should the UK take these workers away from their home nations to the home nations detriment? We have to train our own population to take care of itself. The answer to UK workforce issues shouldn’t lie in poaching from elsewhere.

I just like their accents and a lot of them look nice, the women aren't bad either😉
On a more serious note, Western Australia is currently doing an advertising campaign to recruit people from Britain to live and work there, people will always go where the money is, and if the UK needs them we will still look elsewhere to bring them in. We cannot be totally self contained when it comes to employment.

They wouldn't be taking them, its whats known as " free movement" using their or our, own free will to work in other European countries. Many if most people including most Brits , would like that liberty and freedom to choose where we live and work.

That was what Brexit was all about. Foreigners coming over taking our jobs...

No it’s called exploitation of poorer countries who can’t afford to pay the same level of wage as richer countries.
So the poorer countries educate and train up medical staff only to see them up sticks to the UK. There’s no such thing as free movement. There’s movement for travel and residence and work, which is subject to rules and laws wherever you may go.

There was free movement when we were in the EU, which worked both ways. Now it's subject to visa requests.

It’s always best to understand the motives of those who have an impact on our lives. Those who voted for Brexit voted for a multitude of reasons.
It's easier to get to the heart of it when you look at the people who funded the leave campaign in a significant way, what did they want?
Like you say there are a multitude of reasons for the voters, those that run the campaigns just want to put a tune out there that enough people will sing along to.

Like Putin.

I was in Dublin last week with work and thought how refreshing it was to go into bars and coffe shops and be served by pleasant smiling Europeans instead of grumpy English kids who obviously don't want to be there in the first place.
Raises a different point. Why are English kids grumpy when they work compared to those pleasant Europeans?
Do we bring them up to be precious or feeling they are too important to do such menial jobs? Is it in the way we educate or school our teens?

Because they're on minimum wage and can't afford to move out? Ever?

It’s a truism though. The service is pretty shocking in this country compared to the smiley service you enjoy in Mainland Europe (well barring Paris but I think that is purely for show 😁)

Apparently not, because a majority voted to give up that right.

Well my Christmas edition of PE finally got delivered today on same day that the 4th January (a day late) was delivered. Well done Royal Mail !

You must’ve been gutted as it meant you’d be too late to purchase any of this years fabulous bargains from ‘Gnome’s Christmas Giftmart! I got my copy in time and still missed out on The Baroness Mone Horror Mask, priced at just £30 million! 😷

Don’t take your eye off the ball with the dingy divers. Legal immigration is through the roof. It’s the globalist way of obtaining cheap labour. They live in gated mansions and don’t care about the rest of us.
