Public backlash against media coverage of Prince Philips death

Now, this is not a pop at Royalty or the death of Prince Philip, it is very sad he has died.

However BBC, ITV, Sky etc., have been inundated with complaints about the coverage with has been described as OTT.

All BBC Radio music programs have been told to only play sad songs for 3 days and there is little else being reported, for example the BBC online site is 90% stories about Prince Philip.

Personally, I'm sorry for his death, but how have the media got the feeling of the country so wrong? 99 year old man, Duke of Edinburgh, married to the Queen. Hugely important person but surely they should realise the vast majority of the country are saddened but the length of grieving the media seem to want to impose is absolutely ridiculous! If he was still alive he would much prefer the thought of everyone rejoicing in his life and getting on with their own.

Seems OTT to me anyway.

Ye. I respect his work ethic and loyalty etc etc .
Am not a royalist, nor am I anti royal. But 3 days of interrupted services is way ott in my opinion.

I don't think he was hugely important at all, outside of the family itself.

I love the BBC, but they badly misjudged this. The coverage has been fawning and absurdly OTT. He was a very privileged man, who did a fair amount of good work and died at a ripe old age. A couple of hours tribute programme would have been plenty.

What are the BBC to do? They are the national broadcaster and the right are just itching to climb into them saying they are unpatriotic. They have to play it this way.
Boris is looking to dismantle the Beeb for sure but the Beeb have got this very wrong but the number of complaints means they can go to the Government, if it was done to appease them, and say they got it wrong.

The live commentary on the BBC is almost comical. Unheard of fawning toffs doing the live commentaries. Fulfilling every stereotype of the upper classes. "Oh ya his Grace was a very keen sportsman. He absolutely adored the hunts at Balmoral and was known to hiv quite a devilish shot" type stuff.

In a year when lots of great men and women have died the coverage and OTT pontifications are nothing short of nauseating.
Some royal sycophant on the radio this morning was repeatedly going on about 'how much the country owed Prince Philip'.
We owe him nothing. In fact if anything its the other way round.

I quite liked him. He tried hard to modernise his outdated attitude and was a rock for the Queen. I value the Royal Family, although I think they should sell off a few houses and paintings and donate the funds to revitalise the NHS. A fitting tribute to both them and the NHS? They also need to drop some of the archaic bullshittery. But, on balance ... I'm all for them.

RIP Philip. But can all the bullshit stop now please?

PS. I believe his final wish was that 'there isn't too much fuss'.

They are shooting themselves in the foot by not controlling the situation more.

The backlash will be strong when it comes, and as someone said earlier .... how do they top this fuss for the Queen??

It will actively turn people against the Royal Family, which is a real shame.

The backlash was primarly against the BBC which yesterday had cancelled its normal schedules but showed exactly the same coverage on BBC1, BBC2 and BBC News. No real justifcation for the same coverage on all 3

I don't think it will.

These plans were probably made when we have 5 channels

BBC are bricking it from the attempts to dismantle, so went over the top to prove their ‘loyalty’. Expect this more in everyday life once the heritage and museums summit kicks in.

Best one was 'After they got married for a short time they managed to live a normal life in Malta - attending balls, playing polo, sailing their yacht.'

Spending your wealth feeding the poor I take it?

My wealth?! Does a few quid count as 'wealth'. Who are you? My accountant?

Are you seriously pursuing a line of questioning that tries to compare my personal 'wealth' and the decisions of what should be done with it with the Royal family? I guess you must be a youngster?

Ok your money is yours and the royal family is to give theirs away, if you have only got a few quid I will gladly give you some if it improves your life, and I'm definitely young.

With virtually all the BBC channels giving obituary coverage yesterday, and BBC1 and BBC2 actually transmitting the same programme simultaneously on Friday evening, it all felt, well, a bit Politburo. As if a Soviet General Secretary has snuffed it. You know, play only sombre classical music for 3 days. OK, it’s history. But a little misjudged.

I'm a Royalist and have always liked Prince Phillip so I watched most of the day, but even I say they have gone over the top. In fact, it is bloody stupid to have all channels showing the same thing. They should have shared the airtime evenly and those who didn't want to watch had an alternative.

Does to me, and it’s still going on. They’ll keep it up all week.

It felt like the BBC were trying to make you watch it, rather than choose to watch it.

All very Soviet block tactics for my likening!

And if they hadn't, some of those who have contributed to this thread would have been throwing accusations of left wing bias and anti Britishness at them. They couldn't really win but as has been pointed out, they have left themselves no room for when the Queen passes.

We need to take a deep breath here ,sure he was an important figure and he could be funny in an old fashioned way however the TV coverage has been doing my head in

It's not just the BBC, the newspapers have gone OTT
C mon 99 year old guy dies - he had a good healthy life and did good things
Respect his wishes for no fuss, that would be respectful

A lifetime of support to the Queen. A huge contribution to the youth of this country, sports and playing fields etc, a real war combatant. He deserves the fuss. It’s the me me me, this is my truth, what I think really matters etc mindset that can’t deal with it.

Not bad for somebody who was accused of "just twiddling his thumbs".
