Qatar……..only like UK 50 years ago

It's not like you to be talking to yourself Blood, but I feel a lot of, so called, mis-justices are of similar fashion. you've rightly named one. to name others would certainly be controversial and no doubt end with the poster being banned!

I see this is too controversial …..it’s true though….we all pontificate from our exact position but our Dads/Grandads had different views to ours…..fact
We have different views to our earlier selves. We've developed into more tolerant people. In my time I've seen me do it. I see younger people who take to it more naturally. The World is a far smaller and more socially integrated place than it has ever been. And yet, there are still outliers who cling to intolerance as if it's some kind of safety blanket. We're seeing the people of Iran desperately trying to subvert the official order of misogyny; women and girls campaigning for their freedoms against Taliban repression. These outlier States that practice social intolerance are not late developers that need to catch up. They are repressive authorities who power derives from subjugation.

Its not controversial at all, through the whole of the fifties there was an increasing tolerance or ambivalence to homosexuality. The mid fifties saw the first official gov report stating that homosexuality should not be a criminal act and it took a decade or so to get through the various stages of legal ratification.

It might only be 50 years since it was uncrimininalised in the UK,an insignificant time in human history but if you actually look at history, homosexuality was a normal part of ancient behaviour and customs, It might actually be our evolutionary biological standard as it is with most primates and other mamals, the impact of centuries of stupid and dangerous religious thinking is the reason we as society have had these. Even if you dad or grandad wasnt religious he was infected by a religiously biased education, and national culture.

Its not just that qatar is still criminalising homosexuality, it has a poor record on human rights in general, persuade them to change yes but how do you do that if you dont judge and condemn their behaviour. Stop selling them arms or technology or anything else that enables them to operate in the modern world, let them operate within their superstition based system, and lets see if they can survive. the thing with countries like Qatar they want it both ways, a hi tech society with all the western advantages for a small elite and everyone else licking dirt off the roads for nourishment and controlled by so called morality police.

The problem is the UK still has enogh people who still believe the same supersticious nonesense, and quite a few of them hold positions of high office.

Britain is regularly criticised for our colonial past when amongst other things we imposed our laws and values on other cultures, maybe its about time we kept our noses out of other countries culture.

They’ve got oil which means they can do whatever the feck they like.
We can pontificate as much as we like but we need their sweet sweet hydrocarbons

Criminalising is bad enough. Execution is different altogether. We haven't executed anyone for being a homosexual in 300 years.

Qatar has its own laws, values, standards, practices and religious influences. They’re fully entitled to.

FIFA knew exactly what they were getting when they approved Qatar, with regards to LGBT and alcohol. So any issues this presents are the responsibility of FIFA.

In my opinion, the World Cup should only be hosted by a country which is accommodating and welcoming to all.

But now that the World Cup event is with Qatar, it’s down to individuals to decide whether they want to go. If they do go, they have to be compliant and respectful of Qatar’s ways and laws, or rightly face the consequences.

Qatar clearly wants to open itself up more to the world. Therefore this World Cup could lead to a future softening of their approach to LGBT. Let’s see.

With regards to their reported maltreatment of migrant workers, this isn’t a well kept secret. So again, the footballers, teams, fans, politicians etc., have had plenty of time to examine their own consciences. In my opinion it’s a bit hypocritical to make a noise about the issue yet still attend. If they were sincere they wouldn’t attend. But instead they do attend and merely espouse a few soft platitudes so they can be seen to be on the side of the disadvantaged. That’s disingenuous in my opinion.

Now that the World Cup is with Qatar and well attended by countries and fans, the moaning about LGBT etc is too little and too late. Now that teams are there it’s a case of getting on with it and embracing the tournament. You can’t be half-baked about it. Everyone had a choice - to go, or not go. Anyone there who starts making gestures is a complete and utter hypocrite. That includes the England squad.

They’ve been getting down on a knee. But they have all too willingly headed to Qatar. They captains of various teams wanted to wear a ‘one love’ armband in some supposed show of solidarity with the LGBT community. Well I’m sorry, that’s pathetic. If they were at all genuine, they wouldn’t have attended.

Agree with all that.

From the minute FIFA gave the gig to Qatar we have accepted their culture and laws of the land as part of the deal for all travelling fans.

The buck stopped right there and we can’t object if we want to be present.

You can still boycott obviously, as a form of protest, but you can’t go over there expecting them to bend out of shape to meet our demands.

Foreign labour??

So people chose for themselves to go to the country for work or are you suggesting they were all kidnapped
People from poor countries who have little hope are easily exploited and work under poor conditions. This isn't Auf Weiderseyen Pet.

India and Pakistan aren't poor countries
They've got a fair few billionaires but the majority are poor. Some are in hellish conditions, I watched a documentary on Indian slums, the worst showed families living on a toxic dump in tents, no water or electricity. The children scavenged material off the dump, they will be dead now as it was highly toxic. In your mindset that's not poor????

Hypocrites who jumped at the chance to be out there. There is nothing stopping them donating their wages that they have earned from this world cup to the immigrants and the wronged people if they really care that much. Money and mouth springs to mind.

Have you been to Preston

The median monthly earnings in India (and Pakistan) are about £300 per month. That means about 500 million people earn less than that, and most of them very much less.

It’s a flawed debate about India being a poor country because ‘poor country’ is far too simplistic a term and in fact meaningless without a definition.

In some respects India is a very rich country with a huge economy. Are there many citizens living in poverty? Yes. But rich country, poor country mean little unless you define what you mean by those terms.

People say we’re a ‘rich country’ yet we too have many in poverty and have austerity mark 2 upon us, high inflation, huge debt levels and nowhere near enough money to pay for sufficient social housing, social care, etc etc.

So forgive me if i find this squabble about what a rich country is very tedious. 😮🤣🤣

Ps I doubt anyone on here could define ‘median’ without having to consult a dictionary.

Median earnings are a much better indication of what an ordinary person in a population earns. And half of the population of India earns less than 300 pcm which makes at least half of the population desperately poor. That's all you really need to know.

Spot on LALA, I've said similar on other threads and all down to FIFA.

They pretend to promote diversity in football and then accept a bid to host their biggest competition from a country where homosexuality is outlawed.

You couldn't make it up.

How many World Cups have England hosted while homosexuality was legal in the country ?

You make fair points but so does Blood, we might not be as bad but we are not perfect.

Many of the population may be poor but that doesn’t mean it’s a poor country. It depends what you define as a poor country. You could have a ‘rich country’ where the wealth is not distributed fairly. India has a huge economy and is a nuclear power. It’s not without money.

The UK apparently is a rich country but we have many living in poverty. But our poverty looks a lot different to how poverty looks in less wealthy countries.

So it’s too simplistic to talk in terms of rich, poor,
and poverty. And it’s too complicated for most to understand about medians. That’s all you really need to know. 😉
