QPR v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 23.02.22

Another own goal at the near post near the end. e.g. The Bournemouth 1st goal incorrectly credited to Lowe
Keeps happening doesn't it, at this level players make you make a challenge or get that bit ahead so you feel you have to challenge.

But that twice now, you can only be so unlucky got to do better.

Agreed, he will improve, thing is he shouldn't be on the pitch, it's our awful injury record and it showed all over the pitch tonight. We need players back now!
Injuries are no excuse, we won’t do anything until we 1) stop the sideways/ backwards pissing about 2) stop making mass changes to the team 3) don’t start games with a negative mindset and 4) score more than one goal per game. Trying to hold on to a scoreless draw from the kick off rarely works, neither does trying to hold on to a one goal lead. After two years I am still waiting waiting for the exciting , entertaining football we were promised.

That starting selection proved to be remarkably ineffective. Have we played another game this season where we have had no shots on or off target all half?

As Lytham said…ain’t going up, ain’t going down…..you can take results with less angst and hope it’s all building Critch’s idea around building a Superteam for next season

A game is 90 minutes long! You can't turn up, play for 30 and expect to win against a top Championship side, especially playing it back and forth across the back like you have all the time in the world. Very poor tonight!

NC rightly takes the plaudits... so he must take the flack .... got this game wrong from the off... negative set up and mindset against a team on a poor run... gutted by the late winner but we didn’t deserve anything ...
I wrote in s message to a mate that we have some players who can compete against the league's best - Lavery, Madine, Bowler, Stewart, Dougall - but that others are too slow in their thinking; mid-table at best. Tonight I thought Critchley's thinking was mid-table.

Not just no shots. No crosses either.
Coaching staff should be embarrassed
There was a corner from Dale that was woeful, set a tone, there was so much poor play, poor balls. Falling for qpr feints and having to put the ball out of play for their time wasting.

We owed qpr one for the goal we didn't get but your not going to get it back if we can't even hold onto a draw against 10 deflated men. Pisstake.

The fact is we haven't got a creative midfielder. We should have sorted that in January knowing Keshi and Carey were out long term. Either of those 2 would have made the difference tonight. That is the one area that really needs sorting. With inflated fees and panic buying, January was possibly not the right time but it must be sorted in the summer.

Mission this season stay in the division, we are on target to do that comfortably. Look at Hull and Peterborough and the struggle they have had with what is a huge step up to the Championship.

I find my self slightly struggling with the idea that our season is already over. All feels a bit flat tonight, which of course is pretty daft when you consider we'd have been delighted to be safe by now at the start of the season. We need a five nil job or a three two thriller or something to get things going again.

Poor starting lineup tonight and defensive formation. Lavery up front on his own and long high balls to him which he had no chance of winning. Game crying out for Madine from early on. We are not going up or down, so what is the point of not setting up for a win from the off? Too much swapping and changing! Pick your best team, Critch!

How many points have we thrown away in the final moments of games this season? As others have said, we’re not going up and we’re not going down, but had we hung on in games where we had a result we could have pressing for the play offs. I like Critch, we are fortunate to have him, but he needs to find a way of getting his side the manage the game better. It’s shocking that we’ve dropped so many points late on. Shocking.

Saturday can’t come quick enough to forget that gash tonight.
Batter Reading and all forgiven
Not really a matter of forgive though is it? We learn as we go along. We learn who our capable players are and who aren't quite going to get there. Perhaps more importantly, can we use our supposed improved training and medical teams to keep our best players on the pitch and not in the treatment room? We've had two seasons of large numbers of casualties. Is there something for Critchley to learn here?

Don't think we were trying to hold on to a 0-0, think we were clearly set up to soak up pressure and hit them on the break, nick a goal or two. That didn't go too well.

Now I'm not known to be the voice of reason believe me and Im as p*ssed off as much as everyone else but ..... Since when did we ever believe we d beat QPR away (til tonight 2nd half) Our experienced centre halves (Marv, Dick & Hubby) all out leaving Thorniley, who is coming along fine despite only recently back from Lg 1, and looks less likely to make balls-ups now than when he first came and does have quite a nice left foot, Olli Casey, in his first start - and against 3rd top with premier aspirations, will develop alongside any of the 3 out injured. Don't blame those two. They'll develop fine be more ready next season. Ok I didn't go but watched it red button in comfort of homeQPR, 3rd top again, were time wasting after 50 mins. Despite their obvious class they were shitting themselves 2nd half. Onwards and upwards. We are the Pool and we do not want be going up or even in Play offs this season just to be as good as we can be with current depleted squad and, of course, win an away game in April. The future is still tangerine, Believe in the project. Back to the beer now cos I'm so p.ssed off!

No one was expecting a win but that was shocking. A soft goal to go behind and then they go down to 10.

We huff and puff and get back into it and then give it away in such a poor way.

From the position we found ourselves in late on a good side doesn't lose from there.

There are some proper ** wet wipes on here tonight,
Quite agree, some reactions are so OTT you wonder how many were only children who had tantrums and threw their dummies out of their prams every 5 minutes. Nowadays there's no patience, tolerance of new players bedding in etc. Or the team just having a bit of an off night. More has gone better than expected than not already this season and next season we'll be much stronger, more savvy and hopefully pass it forward with intent much more often than we pass it back

We get you don’t like him, and you’re entitled to your opinion, but why is everything his fault every time he plays?
To be fair that second goal was clearly his fault. I was right above the goal, the attacker pointed for a good five seconds where he was going and where he wanted the ball and Thorniley was too busy ball watching to notice, seemed to have no clue the guy was there until he was on top of him. It’s not like he snuck up on him. Thorniley just didn’t look at what was going on around him.

To start with such a defensive set up against a team who haven’t won in 5 games shows a total lack of ambition.
I personally wouldn't have set up with 5 at the back either I don't think. The squad is looking pretty poor at the moment with the injuries we have, especially defensively, so I can see the logic.

Agree about the injuries. Second season with loads of them. Somat's amiss. Even so, defensive against 10 men? Are we mice or men (squeak)?

Probably why we’ve started to go much longer with passes out to Hamilton etc. Almost like they know the midfield won’t create anything, so our best hope is to boot it long hoping for a knock down or to win the 50:50’s.

Missing Marv and Keogh need at least one of them back asap I thought Thorniley played well, Casey was comfortable on the ball and both have a good eye for a pass just a bit naive defensively just yet Casey didn't cover himself in glory for their first he needs to be clearing that which is what Marv would have done if he was playing he was also slow to close the cross down for the second but he needed some game time I think he'll come good with a few games under his belt.
