Ryder Cup 2025

Captain Luke Donald has named 11 of the 12 players who were successful 2 years ago on home soil…Only change being Rasmus Hojgaard who qualified automatically instead of his brother Nicolai.

Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick, who all played in the 16½-11½ victory in Rome in 2023, were Donald's selections.

They join Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Hojgaard and Tyrrell Hatton, who automatically qualified.

A very strong team. On paper probably stronger than the USA but the New York crowd will no doubt be extremely vociferous and anti Europe.

All starts 26th September…..can’t wait.

Fitzpatrick's record of 2 wins 7 defeats and 1 draw from his 10 matches isn't anything to shout about

Compare that to Cantlay's record of 5 wins 2 defeats and 1 tie in his 8 matches over 2 ryder cups. Matt needs to step upto the plate.

US 4 rookies to Europe's 1 may give us a slight advantage

Yep, can't wait for this! Since '95 we are only actually 4-3 down in America, which surprised me, and 10-4 up overall. We're outsiders at the bookies but I fancy us strongly! 11 out of 12 of our players stuffed them 2 years ago.

They all play on pga tour most of the year so know what the yanks will be like.... they'll just be a bit louder and even more irritating than normal. No problem.

Walker Cup starts this weekend I think, worth a watch too
Definitely! Being played at the number 1 course in the World rankings Cypress Point!
2 of our Cambridgeshire boys in the team of 12 so big feat for such a small golfing County
Clemons and Weaver ( son a a famous jockey from Newmarket)

Looking forward to it, I have a vested interest as my electrician who works for me a lot is Clemons uncle so I get all the updates and he's out in the States this week with him, I hope he makes it on the Pro Tour.

Trump likely to draw up an Executive Directive to name himself in their team and impose a 100000% a day residence tariff on any non yank golf player.

Not that I am arsed at all about the weekend millionaire wanker’s so called sport. 👍🏻

I think we'll win it, this team won't care about the pissed up bro wankers in the crowd.

It's weird that the Trump lot get 500k each and Europe play for free.

Buzzing for this, my favourite sporting contest. All set to tune in from 11am Friday through to midnight (ish) Sunday, barring a trip to the fireworks on Sat night.

I'm interested in this. Wouldn't watch golf normally, perhaps the Open here, a bit, but love the whole sort of set up.

Should be at Augusta though. Not some dump where pastrami on rye with a skinny ta go is king.

Yep can't wait for this
I can't understand why USA are favourites, I'll be having a good punt on Europe
History tells us the away team are massive underdogs pal, USA have not won away in 30 years and Europe have not won away since 2012 and the 'Miracle of Medina" Ryder Cup.

I do think we are probably better equipped than I can ever remember to win away this time, we're returning 11 of the 12 players from our success in Rome in 2023 and we have the same captain in Luke Donald, the team spirit and bonds from Rome will stand us in good stead.

The New York crowd will be as passionate and noisy as any you'll see anywhere in the World, but this team is more than capable of silencing them.

Somewhere down the line, there will be an “incident”, or two, or three. New Yorkers can’t keep their gobs shut and someone like Rory will react.
Probably the only form of golf where hooligans turn out.

Was watching the Tales from the Ryder Cup last night when Hale Irwin halved the last to win at Kiawah Island.

He blazed his drive 50 yards to the left into the sand dunes on the last, but by the time he got to his ball, it was mysteriously on the fairway.

I'd also completely forgotten that Azinger cheated in the four balls (which annoyed Seve so much they came back from 4 down at the turn to win 2 and 1).

The point was made that our galleries have a constantly changing repertoire of songs while the Americans have the utterly dull and moronic USA, USA, USA.

Blast! Completely forgot about that.
You any particular pub(s) in mind for Saturday?

The Yanks have got a funny way of team bonding.
I watched a clip on YouTube this morning and after the obligatory singing of the star spangled banner they had a bloke who lost his firefighting Dad in the 911 tragedy and who was, now himself, a NYFB firefighter telling the US Ryder cup team about togetherness and as they always say on a call out "let's go get 'em"

I would loved to have pointed out to whoever organised that shambles that the next few days is a golf tournament, no more no less. Yes, it'll be great to win but please don't compare it to a terrorist attack and the aftermath that was utterly incomprehensible.

Only my opinion but I fail to understand why they are favourites.
I suppose its purely a stats thing. They've won last 2 in America. 3 out of last 4 in America.
I do think Europe will win. When Woods was the standout individual player the Americans never bonded as a unit around the number 1 player. Europe won 7/9 between 2002-2018. Sheffler is now the standout and I firmly believe we will have the Woods effect again.

I'm going to Vilamoura on Thursday until Monday, playing during the mornings then watching the golf from Bethpage.

I think the plan is to go to the Turls Green

You must have had a big retirement plan to cover your golf fees!
Early tee times?
“Turls Green” Not heard of it but can google it.
Weatherspoon first. Cheers.

Forty years on, how Jacklin revitalised Ryder Cup

Article on the BBC website, reminder that the Ryder cup was nearly over.

Should Jacklin have been knighted, I think he should have been.

Most definitely should have been. Has OBE but having won 2 majors together with what he has brought to the Ryder Cup, it is strange that he hasn’t been knighted…yet.

Really looking forward to this. All 3 days clear in the diary, though obviously checking in on the Pool Saturday.
Concerned about Straka and Fitz but otherwise all good. Crowd will need silencing and 4 rookies in the US team could be a difference.
Good start Friday is vital. Come on Europe

Wouldn’t say that Bethpage Black is a dump!
Although it is a municipal course

…….and also Wiz, “GET IN THE HOLE”. When a player tees off on a par 5.
It’s got boring now and they need to get something original.
I also think the media have stirred up potential for a bit more rowdiness by saying that the yanks will kick off if their players dont perform especially when they’re being paid. Talk about being an honour to play for your Country
Actually that would play right into our hands.

It all happened when the Ryder Cup was at Royal Lytham and Jack Nicklaus had a meeting with Lord Derby and they agreed that they should allow European pro golfers to play in the Ryder Cup, the rest is history.
Give Jacklin due respect as he demanded that the European team had 5 star treatment and went fully prepared with all the best kit and flew by Concorde.

Wasn’t popular with the powers that be when he moved to the Channel Islands to avoid paying tax. Then started a relationship with an underage girl after Vivian his wife died. It’s all in his autobiography which is a good read.
He should have been knighted for his achievements in golf

Forgot about that. His wife was 44 when she died.

Said he lost the plot for a time after that.
