Saving the earth but not the money.

I have recently read that the Mayor of West Yorkshire has joined other Mayors around the UK for a meeting in Brazil to look at ways to save the earth from global warming.

Goodness know what this jolly has cost us taxpayers and I would question , when there are already politicians attending this 'get together' along with the future King, is it really necessary for local politicians such as Mayors to also attend.

Plane fairs, Hotels, Transport, Food and other expenses from how ever many Mayors and hangers on are attending this meeting will be, I would assume, fairly high and the money wasted could be better spent elsewhere.

I would presume they are rowing there to stop using planes...

By far the biggest expense is the new construction of a 4 way highway through the Amazon rainforest, resulting in large deforestation to accommodate the influx of over 50,000 attendees (including world leaders) to the COP30 climate summit (mentioned in the OP).

Utter madness.
Does this expensive, climate destroying, jolly boys outing, really need to be held annually?.

Surely it would make more sense to the climate, to hold it in one of the many existing towns or cities.
Or hey, how about this for a revolutionary idea, do it via zoom

Bit like Greta Thunberg doing her bit for saving the world on her voyage to Israel a yacht that burns hundreds of gallons of fuel an hour generators that supply power also need diesel or does she not know that? Maybe she thought it was just the wind that moves a yacht and makes everything work?

She was supporting Gaza even before Israel had time to strike back.

Just plant more trees and wait for science to perfect carbon capture and storage more efficiently.

As for energy production - without an actual functioning grid system green production is almost a waste of time - again we await science to perfect fussion reactors (or at least for energy companies to allow the patents to see the light of day!!)

Plant more trees?

Just tell Ed Milliband that while he destroys trees to put windmills and solar panels in.

I remember Greta queen of the greens tweeting that the world would end by 2023 if we continue to use fossil fuels.

Nope.

Why can't they video conference, if they were serious? 🤷

As a 'new' poster, you do seem to write a complete load of made up rubbish....Welcome back JJ, we missed you
What for having an opinion and not believe the hysteria by certain green zealots.
What do you suggest we do close down all airports and ban flying?
Given that Russia and China cause more damage to the environment I would say that we (the UK) don’t need to fall for this BS as humanity will continue.

And before any accuses me of not caring about our wildlife.
I have a lot of respect for movements like Greenpeaace and save the whales etc
My issue is with the super wealthy who preach that we should do more for the environment but travel all over the world and own yachts!

Again, I don't even know where to start on the fact you seemed to have read stuff and got.....Close down airports and people who own yachts.
Seriously....If you understand that Russia& China cause environmental damage.....but you think it's 'BS'.....I think were way passed helping you.....

You don’t have to research too much to find that the Chinese are doing more than their fair bit in terms of renewable energy.

They are of course one of the biggest carbon producers but in May it was reported that their clean energy has put their carbon emissions into reverse for the first time but theirs a long way to go yet.

The less said about Russia the better….

Bill Gates has done a climate U turn as well. It’s In the news.

We’ve poured billions down the drain for no measurable improvement because a 12 yr old said “how dare you” and despite her clearly being placed there in front of the worlds media for effect, we fell for it.

The only good thing to come from it was the longstanding nuclear plans were rebadged as ‘carbon neutral’ and sailed through govt approval. Every cloud and all that, but shows how easy the masses are manipulated.

Telling us to save the world and stop driving diesel cars whilst sitting on an iron bird for hours on end burning fuel at a catastrophic level.

I’ll stick to going on holiday and continue to support those driving diesel cars, thanks.

My airport comment was in relation to Patrick Harvie (leader of Scottish greens) who wants to limit the amount of flights in airports, which would potentially lead to closures.
The BS I mentioned was in relation to the extremist element of extinction rebellion who continue scaremonger about the end of our existence and civilisation in the not so distant future.
Given that we are now eco friendly then what we have ever been including reducing our gas emissions.
Thanks for your concern but I don’t need any help unless you are suggesting we go to even more extreme lengths and all give up our car and travel everywhere by horse and carriage.
Do you agree that to achieve the net-zero target by 2050 we should give up all diesel/fuel cars in next few years? If so how do you expect people on low income to afford EVs given they are much more expensive?

A serious point I would make is that Shell have announced they are going to continue to lay people off due to their energy transition.
So what the hell are we going to do with the people whose livelihoods will get ruined due to these policies.
I think it will cause more internal damage the greener we try to become.

Here's an idea, stick them on roof's, no need for a grid system.

Just a few days ago the Government finalised a brand new deal with Drax, the UK’s single biggest carbon emitter, to hand them one million pounds per day, meaning: more forests destroyed, communities poisoned and even more carbon emissions at the cost of all of our bills.

Im guessing they could get jobs in forestry, the production of wind turbines and solar panels, maybe the nuclear power industry if we go down that route, or the construction and design of hydro electric or tidal projects.
Maybe we should encourage more organic farming which would mean less chemicals and more people employed.
If we really embrace the green thing we could go back to sail boats and canal barges to transport none urgent goods. When i look at architecture from the 1800s compared to what gets built today maybe a lot would improve by taking a step back but with 21st century technology.
Alternatively the people at Shell could get the sort of jobs that people in all industries such as ship building, mill workers or miners got when they were deemed surplus to requirements.
