Does anyone think we will be attacked in the next decade? I know they’re talking a lot about cyber attacks etc, but ordering 12 F35s with nuclear bomb carrying facilities suggests we might be fighting on our own soil.

Adding £30 billion by 2035 to the £75 billion to get us to 2.6% defence spending by 2026, is massive and so far not costed, where will it come from?IMG_4345.jpegIMG_4344.jpeg

I do not personally see a scenario where the UK mainland comes under attack from a foreign country.
Our only adversaries are potentially Russia and some of the Middle East more despotic countries - for all of them the logistics of actually getting here make it tough as they have to sail through allied waters or fly over allied airspace.

Likewise if we came under threat from missles, it's likely that it'll be our European neighbours hit before our little island.

I do however see constant cyber strikes and potentially terrorist activities.

The proposed squadron of 12 F35As will be the UKs contribution to support NATOs nuclear capability and is needed as a deterrent to the ever growing threat from Russia and farther afield, we cannot afford just to sit back and hope this never happens so were going back to the times of the cold war I'm afraid.

Ditto completely.

Don’t often l disagree with you Chunks but the UK mainland is under very serious threat from other rogue countries and it would be naive to think otherwise and intelligence gathering backs this up.

Just finished episode 5 of the wargame on Sky, it’s a scenario where Russia does attack the uk. Characters are played by Ben Wallace as PM and the likes of Amber Rudd, Jack Straw and various military leaders. Worth listening to.

Fair enough always to disagree.

How do you see those attacks happening TB? For me i cannot see any conventional attack.

Just finished this myself. One of the most interesting, yet sobering things I have listened to in a long time. The man behind the strategic defence review is very much involved in it along with many former ministerial and military personell (including former defence sec Ben Wallace).

The peope who put this together know what they are talking about and it felt to me that this podcast was put together as a warning to the public and the current government. The threat is real.

A very good listen and I would recommend giving it a listen if you haven't already done so.

Attacks by air could quite easily be conventional unless things get really ugly, will probably come from over the north sea or the north of Scotland. Russian ships and undetectable subs are always encroaching our waters, as l suspect we do in other waters.

We have no missile defences, in war game, they said the basic iron dome, which is land to air defence to bring down missiles, would cost £25 billion.

Genuine question and I don't mean to come across condescending, why would we order nuclear carrying equipment if we were fighting on our own soil?

We'd been doing campaigns to get people in and start to ramp our armies up, testing UK wide systems and alerting systems. Testing defence and installing missile defence systems across the UK. I don't get where you've got from that statement we are expecting wars in the UK?

Hopefully you’re right, but the report is saying we need to be on a war footing and they’re talking about ramping up the home guard

Putin must be pissing himself laughing. The 'west' in general ups it's defence budget at the expense of other projects such as energy generation, therefore maintaining reliance on Russian oil/gas on a longer term scale when things calm a bit.

There is zero chance of a direct attack on the UK by Russia. It would only ever come from the sea and the defences would snuff that out.

As said in an earlier post cyber warfare is where it's at and is a much more level playing field in terms of a smaller nation taking on the UK.

A@se licking Mark Rutte, NATO chief praising Trump and called him daddy. Yes he stopped the Iran/Israel war for now, but reign it in please

Bring back 'National Service'.
Did mine in 1953/5.
Teaches you discipline and how to act in many varying circumstances.
I was worried when 'Called Up', not knowing what to expect even though my Bro was already a
'Regular' in the Navy.
However, a lot of todays youth wouldn't be able to face it.

It would solve the youth unemployment problem as well, thereby saving benefits, plus they’d then pay tax on their earnings. Win, win.
