A leaked US Supreme Court draft opinion on abortion rights, if enacted, could see women’s access to abortion being restricted or removed in the USA. The possibility that women could, in future, be putting their lives at risk in back street abortions contrasts markedly with the Republican majority on the Supreme Court who view it through a prism of 'pro-life'. As many as 26 States are expected to enact partial or total abortion bans if Roe falls. Some Republican-run states are expected to attempt to make travelling for an abortion illegal. Democratic-run states have indicated moves to protect and help women who seek an abortion.
Should the SCOTUS go down this route it will not only put women's health in danger, it would also wipe away women's right to choose - thereby challenging the 14th amendment’s concept of personal liberty… against government interference with intensely personal decisions. It would also divide the country even more than had already happened under Trump's presidency: the life chances of the rich against those of the poor; the concepts of liberty and democracy against those of an increasingly patriarchal, evangelical Republican movement. A movement that no longer accepts a rule of law under liberal democratic principles and which, by extension, rejects the authority of a Democratic President elected under the principles of a free and open election.
