a few years ago I did some work where we were defining north and south for a research project. we ended up drawing a line from north of bristol, took in Cheltenham but missed out Gloucester, took in Banbury, Milton Keynes and Bedford up to Peterborough but missed out Northampton, and then came down taking in Cambridge, bury st Edmunds and Colchester, but missed Ipswich which with Norwich was considered eastern and lumped in with the north. Most of Devon and Cornwall was also not considered south. it was a very London centric organisation we were working with.
