Set pieces

… when was the last time we scored a header from a set piece ??

Someone will no doubt prove it wasn’t that long ago…. But it seems an age to me . We don’t even seem to win headers let alone score.

With 3 big centre halves and Fletcher and Bloxham all good 6 footers … we should be much more of a threat .

Is it the delivery or lack of real commitment to get in there ?? …. Probably bit of both …

Chuck in Andy Lyons too who is great in the air and in the past scored several headers.

Is Banksy still the set piece coach 😳

Evo noted it on his appointment. It must come down to personnel as yesterday Evans grabbed everything from the coin toss to every kick. He’s hopeless. When, like us you are faced with attackers (loosely used) who can’t score, set pieces are even more important

If as a former goalkeeper, it's true that Banks is our set piece coach, it's no wonder we rarely score from them!
There's no specific data for set piece goals in league 1 but they contribute significantly in PL goals:
  • 27.8%: This was the percentage of goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season.
  • 19%: This was the percentage of goals from corners alone in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season.
  • 25%: This was the average percentage of goals from set pieces across the Premier League in the first five matchdays of the 2025/26 season.

Evatt said we can have some quick wins and we've seen some decent set piece routines, but again, as with everything, it all falls back to the players.

They have to be able to pass it to someone and get a decent shot away on target, or if it's a ball in get their head on it and put it on target and put in a decent ball in the first place.

We've only got something on target a couple of times out of all the chances and even those were saved.

Of the set piece routines, one we did at Peterborough set up a free hit from within the box, but in typical current Blackpool style is was a complete airshot, with a connection it would likely have seen a goal should it be on target.

Like our shooting in general, we just aren't ruthless enough.

Some poeple mention the formation, it gives different strengths but one strength it does give is 3 CB means 3 big players decent in the air for defending crosses and also in theory better at the other end too for them.

Remember how fragile we looked from set pieces early season, so going back to 2 CB's might weaken us in that sense.

I thought for once Evans put in some good balls ,but if you can't get your head on it properly ,you are not going to score.
