Shayne Lavery

From what I've seen, read and heard about Beesley, he's got a very similar work rate. Having forwards who are willing to press, chase and hound defenders is absolutely key to our game plan. Maybe We'll get to see young Jake make his debut on Saturday.

As for Lavery, he needed that goal, hopefully he can now go on another run of goals. The competition for that place with him and Yates is healthy, 2 very good, young, strikers who give everything for the shirt.

Tin Hat on. Lavery is our number 1 striker. IMO, if he’s fit, he plays.
I agree, have been thinking the same thing. Lavery has overtaken Jerry as our no1 striker. It’s rare now that Jerry starts before him. For me Lavery is the more natural finisher and goal poacher. What a statement to come into a Championship club from the equivalent on non league then within 6 months overtake a 20+ striker and become the clubs first choice! He really is some find and will only get better.

We are very lucky in having at least two players like this, Jerry is in very similar mould. With both, their hardest work is the press, scoring is almost incidental. Lavery's composure to hit the ball into the opposite side of the goal on Saturday was seriously impressive.

I’m glad he had a match winning performance and hope he continues to improve

He’s had a huge step up into the Championship and I’ve seen his potential earlier in the season drift out of his game last couple of months. Confidence is the word.

He must steer his enthusiasm into consistent performances to give him the edge for a lead forward shirt. We’re lucky to have 4 forwards now to share the workload and hopefully the goals.

Fulham will be a huge huge test and we will have to be clinical with any chances there and defend heroically - let’s hope it’s on - we both have plenty of players missing ! C some of you there

I thought he looked fitter and of course sharper on Saturday straight from kick off.
The break did him good in terms of getting that fitness level back - the way both he and Jerry play is based heavily on dogged determination and stamina. They keep going and going and this puts defenders under physical and mental duress as they just don’t stop.

It’s a neat little squad we have complied for comparatively buttons

I agree Lavery is a live wire who like Bowler when they are in form are infectious and you can't take your eyes off them! Hoping for another run of goals for Lavery and I'm keen to see what impact Beesley can have in our attacking options

We've had this conversation a few times. Lavery seems to be getting more of a chance than Yates. I think they are about as equal as it could be.

The problem they both have is they can't play together. Which limits one or the others game time. Add Beesley into the mix and I wouldn't be too shocked to see Yates depart for 3-4 million this window.

This thread is quite a difference from the comments following the Hartlepool game where
he missed 3 guilt edge chances.
It happens to even the best forwards and great to see him to take his chance well.

Shane is quicker than Jerry, better in the air and manages to usually get a shot away on target (Hartlepool excepted !). Jerry has better ball control and a few more tricks. Both have great work rate but with Shane being a little quicker that does put a little more pressure on the defence.

Shane is ahead of Jerry in my opinion. Great to have 2 strikers as good as we have.

I’d just like to remind people of Jerry’s finish against Reading, absolutely top quality. Can’t recall many misses from Jerry, he just hasn’t had any service.

Glad we have both, would love to see them both able to play together.

Agreed Tango. We are soooo quick to prefer the new to the old on this board sometimes. First Maxwell has been pensioned off for Grimmy and now we have fans preferring Shayne to Jerry and making it sound like Jerry is done. Its a squad game and we need them all, plus form ebbs and flows so one man may be fantastic for January then hit a dip in Feb and the other gets the shirt. Lets not just write those off that are not in the team.

I disagree, it’s not about preferring new to old rather it’s about where we are now as opposed to wear we were say 3 months ago for example. Currently, Grimmi is deservedly considered to be the no1 choice between him and Maxi. Equally people now currently see Lavery as our first choice striker. Clearly that may change in the future but as Critch continually refers to we are all about continuous improvement and moving forward.

Comments on Millwall forum...

Bowler stood out for them. Nobody appeared able or willing to tackle him
"Yep, that's one of them. Good player.
Lavery reminded me of David Speedie with his guts and tenacity.
Benik, take note."

And to be honest, he missed a close range header from a corner on Saturday that he really should have scored.

I agree that they may be even, but not so sure about Jerry being on his way… Jerry offers something that Lavery doesn’t offer, which is ‘personality’… He’s clearly a character who adds a lot to the dressing room and he also relates well to the fans….. Of course a £3-4M offer would have to give us pause for thought, but over a long season, I think we still need both….

Worrying about who is the best is not the worst problem to have though 😂

I thought he returned a little slower following his injury and lacked that match sharpness.

He was absolutely electric vs Blackburn prior to picking up the knock. On Saturday, though, he looked much brighter 👍 . Excellent talent and fantastic bit of business.

I can't see anyone making a 3-4 million offer for Jerry at the minute. I noticed earlier that Dilan Markanday who signed for Rovers a week or so ago got injured last Wednesday night after making his debut as a sub, and is likely to be out for the rest of the season. Very bad fortune. Might Rovers resurrect their Yates interest, given their promotion push? Offer a couple of million? I think they'll see him struggling to get a start here and think not tbh.

I love it mate, I don't care who's better. I remember seeing Billy Sharp and the Charlie Austins of this world at other clubs and dying with envy. Now we have two natural goal scorers and a proper shithouse unit in Madine. And who knows what Beesley can offer?

I don't care who's better either. 👍

When it comes to the value of players, I’m absolutely clueless. So I’ve got no idea what Jerry is worth or anyone else.

I don’t think Jerry is particularly out of favour though. Lavery has scored a couple of very special goals and he might edge it slightly, but after he was Injured Jerry stepped up and was banging in the goals…

They’ll both do for me 👍

Wears our shirt with pride and never ever gives up. I am very pleased he is a pool player and strange to think not very long ago he was playing for Linfield

If the bowels of hell were to open up at Bloomfield Road during a match and the ball fell into it, Lavery would be down that hole if he thought there was the slightest chance of winning the ball back.
The concept of a lost cause is totally alien to him.
If he’d have been here under the Os we might have seen this happen. Especially with that corner / drainage/ nemotoads.

I'd start with Jerry and Lavery, using Madine as an impact sub to clatter into the opposition's tiring CBs. Notwithstanding we haven't seen what Beesley can do yet.

I thought Jerry struggled to get into the game when he came on. Trying a few flicks etc that lost possession and could maybe have cost us. His quick feet and reading of the game are definitely his skill, but it must be hard to come into a full tilt affair like last Saturday and immediately start with the silky touches. That said I totally agree with the sentiment that we are better placed for forwards than I can remember in years. Can't wait to see what Jake has to offer 👍

Why Madine as a sub!
He has been a thorn for defences and his immaculate pass created the winning goal last Saturday.
I agree, it should be either Yates or Lavery (not both) with Madine. It’s possible longer term that Beesley might challenge Madine or offer a different option, but big Gaz has been pretty consistent and deserves a regular start.

We have every chance of seeing 2 strikers into double figures in League goals come the seasons conclusion. We could only have dreamt of such a scenario at the outset.

Just my view - yep - a great pass. He'd have more impact later in the game maybe. I think Yates & Lavery as a starting pair would give them more to think about ;)
Lavery on radio Lancs after the Millwall win was saying Madine is the perfect foil for him, he keeps the 2 central defenders occupied and creates space. You'd probably get the same answer from Yates.

Lavery could be the perfect complement for the likes of CJ and Dale because of their speed. Jerry offers composure, footwork and quick thinking in the box. To me they are different, but both of them need a player that can create space for them and keeps the CBs at bay.
I like the way every player brings something different to the team, and I will bet that Beesley will offer a better complement to Jerry, who i'd like to see geting some assists.

Lavery is doing well at the moment, and I think he's preferred right now because he actually presses more effectively than Yates, which makes up somewhat for the fact that Madine isn't geared up to really do that.

But we gave Yates a new long term contract for a reason, and it wasn't just transfer value. Yates scored goals last season that Lavery would not be capable of imo, based on what I've seen of him. Think Portsmouth away, Northampton home as two examples.

Lavery is picked at the moment because it suits the way we have to play with the players available, but I don't think he's a better all round player than Yates. That's not saying he isn't good - clearly he's very much championship quality. I think they both are.

I do agree with the comment that they actually have different attributes. I think we've got four strikers now that all offer something different, which is a great position to be in.

I don't know why but we still seem to have problems getting the ball to him. Is it where he plays? Sometimes he is in front of Bowler who doesn't like giving the ball up. Should he be playing more centrally?

think we've two very good and very similar players in Yates and Lavery who are both capable of scoring plenty of goals. I think with a bit of work they could play together. Madine is a very good target man who deserves his place in the team. I do think he and Yates have a better understanding than he and Lavery. Yates gets closer to Madine and imo feeds of him better. But it ain't no big deal. Beesley, we of course have yet to see and how he adjusts to the step up. What I don't agree with is people who big up one player to put down another.

Lavery and Yates have about 17 goals between them, on a job share arrangement. Not too shabby.

It's the rest if the team that needs to chip in more, I reckon. Keshi has done his bit, but nobody else really.
