Simply not long enough.

People like this should be sterilized to prevent them from having more kids and to ensure no more kids are harmed.

Had this been a cat or a dog, she would no doubt have a court order against her preventing her from owning any more pets.

I know that sounds harsh, but, the death of a 20-month-old child in those circumstances is beyond harsh.

It actually happened to a dog and was reported earlier this year. In that case the woman concerned was banned for life from owning pets. She was, however only given a 14 month suspended sentence for the crime. No comparison to a 9 year prison sentence.

I don’t think we can realistically start sterilising people as a form of punishment though. I’d like to hope that we have moved on and are better than that.

I am pretty sure, however, that there would be a very strong possibility that any future children would be taken into care or at the very least their welfare closely monitored.

If you look at the back story to this, the young girl concerned has not exactly had the best start in life… It’s no excuse for her behaviour, but it might go some way to explaining why she may not have been mentally stable…This was not just a normal girl with a normal background.

For whatever reason she was moved to a ‘safe house’ in her early teens and seems to have been involved in child sexual exploitation (which is how she became pregnant).

She had the child whilst she was in protective foster care and at the time of this incident was living in supported accommodation.

I think there are questions that should be asked around how this happened and why safeguarding practices did not prevent the tragedy. I really don’t think that the excuse of the girl having ‘misled’ the authorities is good enough.

We lock up more people than anywhere in Western Europe, parts of the USA has the death penalty but still have mass murders. A system that relies on locking up or killing offenders is based on populist headlines, after the horse has bolted. We need to be far smarter at intervening to stop people getting damaged at young ages and turning rogue.
I did jury service on a 20 year old called Kane Kennedy, he murdered his 7 month old son. If you read the papers he comes across as a monster. He had a terribly depressing childhood, my son is 12 months younger than him and their lives couldn't be further apart. Listening about his childhood was upsetting. Anyway he was sentenced to a min 28 years, I was OK saying he'd murdered his son but I didn't feel any sense of justice really, it was a sad affair all round. Surely a society that intervenes and offers better support would help prevent/reduce these acts happening.
Back to the OP yes she committed an act that was horrendous and needs punishing. As BFC states she had a troubled upbringing, I'm certainly not defending her or Kane but they are damaged children having children. The sentence is actually with the guidelines for manslaughter through neglect, whether you could argue it was murder I doubt it. We've had successive governments who like to play on the tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime, that's cheaper and easier than pumping money into prevention, which doesn't get the headlines. As a society i think we are going to see an increase in these cases as funds for social services and other such sectors have been slashed to the bone. There must be a lot of vulnerable and abused children out there that will be off radar, this is the breeding ground for them to turn into the future monsters.
