South Africa suspends Oxford vaccine

They maintain that they can modify it specifically for the SA mutation. So are they doing that now I wonder ?

We need to get used to this virus mutating for sometime to come and it will require vaccines to be modified to combat it. The trial that SA has conducted that has led to the current suspension involved approx 2000 people with an average of 31. In this country we have relatively few cases of this variant and we are heavily testing in a number of post codes to prevent it spreading. Lets see what the test results are from this country across a wider group of people who have been tested, but mutations will continue to happen.

Aparrently Covid mutations are easier to react to and fewer in number than seasonal flu. I always thought that we would at best reach a situation where annual boosters were expected. The vaccines are still the silver bullet to return to normality.
I would be more than happy to have Astrazeneca jab when my time comes, if other counties choose not to use it, then more for us.

Hoping to have it ready by the Autumn... but how many other mutations will there be around the world by then? We are trying to hit a moving target but it's looking like we can't keep up with the speed of its changes.

147 cases of SA variant already detected in the UK - it's already here
This research is incomplete really, it doesn't tell us much about the level of protection the OU jab has against the SA variant (if any), although it looks like it provides something. We need more information.

I give in, Rusty, what’s the positive in this news?
Where did I say it was positive news? It was a comment on BHOK's negativity, which stands out no matter what the thread.
But the positive bit is that apparently all viruses mutate and it's exactly what was expected. It's also quite easy to tweak the vaccines to suit the mutations. According to the scientists.
But I wouldn't expect BHOK to see it from that angle. I'm just surprised he's managed to get out of bed.

There is some good news.

South Africa is now going to use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine which is made in Port Elizabeth and apparently gives better protection.

The scientists are working on the variants round the clock.

As 20s said about the first one, if it's already here we might as well give up. It's not the Government's fault. They've shut the borders and instigated a world beating track and trace system....oh.
