Spearing shown up by youngsters

Must say I think Ronan and Dewsbury-Hall and Virtue when he came on showed up Spearing for sadly what he is nowadays which is a bad tackling hoofer of the ball who always seems behind play. Surely about time he was dropped!

People are too critical of Jay,at least he tackles and competes, which is something we have seen no one else doing over the past few weeks,I agree the youngsters were very good today though

Before the January window, he tackled more than the rest of the team put together.

He works hard and so may benefit from a rest on the bench v Gillingham, then come on at 60 minutes to help us cruise home for the win. That's positive thinking, for ya! 😀

I'll always say you cannot fault his attitude and desire. He gives 100% and tries his knackers off.

That said I'd give 100% and try my knackers off, doesn't mean I'd be able to do a decent job.

Sadly for Spearo the game is now passing him by at a rate of knots, I imagine he's a good character to have around the dressing room.

For me that is not enough to have him at the club, we should move off him in the summer free his wages up for a younger version in the middle.

Agree with the comments above. I don't know if he has papered over the cracks by his bravado and the fact he's been Captain or actually if he has just got worse as a player. Either way, replace him with Virtue on Tuesday and make Heneghan Captain.

☺My preferred starting 11 excluded Spearing today but he's a good captain, a wise head in a young mid-field and I'd describe with that hackneyed description as a " players player".
Well done Speo.

Well done Speo.
A wise head is a luxury though if he's not contributing much on the football side which I genuinely don't think he is.

I have said for some time we need to see how we are without spearing. The new lads in midfield were passing and tackling and with virtue we should have enough bite in midfield but also a lot more creativity.

Not saying bench him permanently but for Tuesday I'd try without him but probably won't happen.

Cant believe you lot, Spearing would be the first name on the team sheet, experience, desire & guile, we are blessed to have him here. the lad as mentioned always gives 100%, & his strength as a combatant captain is immeasurable to this team..

All go & give your heads a wobble...

Completely disagree - I actually now think he's a bit of a liability. Never comfortable when he's on the ball, always goes back rather than go forward, played a few hospital balls yesterday and am not sure he knows where he's supposed to be - at one point yesterday in the first half he was playing the role of a loan striker!!

Some people watch a very different game to me, clearly.

Spearing's main problem all season has been having nobody to do the unglamorous work with him. It has detracted from his own ability to influence games, but he has still done OK. I didn't think he was exceptional yesterday, but the point was that he didn't have to be.

It goes to show what a great side we now have when folk are criticising Spearing who is a cracking player in my humble opinion. That said the team we put out yesterday should on paper be more than a match for anyone in this league. Let’s give Simon a few more games and we will be back👍

I’m not sure this is quiet accurate. On viewing the first half of the season all we had in the middle was people“doing the dirty work” with Spearing. We had absolutely no outlets, talent or flair.

on balance Iv only seen Spearing with the new boys at Oxford and it just confirmed to me he’s struggling.

to be fair to your point and what Iv been advocating for all round. Judge him at the end of the year after playing with different players around him.

An example of Spearing being careless in possession which is happening a fair bit is shown in the highlights at 30 seconds in.

Theres been a fair few sloppy moments and it stands out a lot more next to the 2 better loan players.

His job is to sit in front of the defence to become an extra defender break up play and let those in front of him do the flare work every team if you play one up top has this type of player.
I'd worry if we had been shipping loads of goals during this poor period which we haven't it those in front of him which haven't been up to the job Dewsbury was brilliant yesterday he had to get the ball from someone.

This is of course true but it's all well and good winning it back but if its then conceded again it's no good. It's also going to happen as in that clip where he has to receive the ball and pass and from what I've seen theres been a few too many errors coming in.

Not saying he always does that but I'd like to see how we do without him. He may be captain but every other player has been rotated bar him really.

I think Virtue adds bite and a bit of flare.

His Range Rover was parked outside my house this afternoon, here on the Wirral.
I was hoping to have a quick word but the car had gone later in the day.

I've no issue playing Virtue in that role he is by far a better passer but I wouldn't like our defence exposed if he was too far forward while attacking.

Experience in the dressing room and a calm head are worth so much. Give him another season for sure.

On paper we have an amazing team of talents let’s see if Simon can get the best out of them.

Attack is the best form of defence and we need all the creativity we can get 😏 I'd rather see excitement and chances. But no reason why we can't have both if we become good enough...

But given all the changes we see, I think it should at least be tried so we can see how we do to form a proper opinion.

It just won't happen though.

We can still have that with him on the bench for a game, coming on if we were a couple of goals up, with fresh legs against tired to shore up.

I thought yesterday that with the new mid's that he seemed to be less effective than his usual gritty self & would have changed him for Virtue earlier. He has proved an integral part of the team since I returned & I'm sure he still has some part to play, as a player it can't be very good morale wise to be dropped then brought back next season when these loanees most likely return. Too early to tell yet but our midfield was so much better, just need the right balance up front to capitalise on it now.

He just needs a rest, replace him with Virtue for a couple of games and see where it goes, keep JS on the bench just in case !

Would be a very inexperienced midfield without Spearing but, it's maybe the time where he comes on later in the match to provide that level of guidance after the younger lads have done the graft.

I've liked Spearing since he came, a good Captain. However the new lads performed very well when he went off.
What's are his chances of regular appearances now?
