Sports Direct Opening

I see they’re potentially flouting the guidance given by the PM last night stating they are an essential business in keeping Britain fit by exercising, especially as bike shops are allowed to remain open.🤔

Which was exactly my point yesterday after the announcement. It wasn't as though it was too nuanced a point but still managed to bypass some. Eh ho.

The two classes of store I am surprised are on the list are bike shops and home / hardware stores. None of these are essential at this stage. People can exercise without going out to buy a new bike. Similarly, improving your house can't be an essential activity in this emergency.
Also some builders and construction workers are still going in. Other than basic safety shutdown it isn't on the list of key working, so the shouldnt be there.

I think they will restrict the lists further in the next few days.

However tight and however specific they make the regulations, there will always be one or two who decide to flout them. Unfortunately, it seems to be the way of the world now. To bring it back to football, there are always those who want to run on the pitch, let smoke bombs or even air bombs off assault players by spitting and standing in seated areas. We can't condemn those that try to get around the law by stating their business is essential whilst choosing to carry out or condoning any of the aforementioned acts in a football ground.

I boycotted this place years ago due to the horrible fat turd who owns it.
I started getting my gear from Decathlon who decided to close yesterday before it was forced on them.
McDonald's will now go on my list after what they did yesterday, announcing the day before that would be closing and causing a last minuet burger rush was disgusting. Police had to be called to turn people back after roads became blocked and essential services couldn't get through😡

They have nearly 18000 workers on the books. Another Mike Ashley brainwave. Epic fail.

and McDonalds...who would queue round the block for that crap? I made better tasting food as a student with a ten pack of economy burgers. Probably Give me mad cow disease mind, but hey ho.

I hope so, Pete. I'm hearing from friends that a lot of construction workers are taking matters in to their own hands and not going in as they feel it is impossible to keep distance.

We were on a government recommended walk/run last evening and went past a McDonalds and there must have been at least 30 cars queuing on the road to get in. How pathetic. These idiots will try and bypass the system and flout the rules.

Have just heard on the radio that Sports Direct are closing after all, I think the negative publicity was too much for Cashley but I am sure his decision is not driven by emotion and that he did the calculation in his head (i.e. which way can I make more money long term stay open or close?).
To be fair it is a difficult time for everyone but this is a national emergency.

I am reminded that this is the guy who went into his own business to demonstrate the security processes with press on hand by going through a scanner and producing the biggest wad of £50 notes that the minimum wage zero hour contracted security lads had or will ever see in their life.

Loved the bit about his 'board meetings' that took place at a local pub near the distribution hub. These involved amongst the talk of business strategy, drinking competitions and the like, I seem to remember something about someone present puking in a fire. This all came to light when a stockbrocker tried to sue Ashley after he made a drunken promise of a massive bonus if the share price went above a certain level.

The hardware shops may have an argument that their products give people a reason to stay at home or are needed for fixing emergencies problems. Baumarkt in Germany is open to tradesmen only or online delivery to the public which seems a good balance.

Hardware stores I can understand as people will want to get things done and tradesmen will need stock.

But none of that is essential is it? And if you need an emergency repair the local authority could maintain a list
There's something about mental health as well. The country needs to keep physically and mentally fit through this, and keeping yourself busy is part of that. If the alternative is slouching ìn front of the TV for months, the longer term impact on health will be greater than the virus itself.

Buzzard, I wouldn't necessarily blame McDonalds, likewise Boris got the blame for announcing pub closures in advance which also caused last minute mayhem.

What about the fukcing idiots who rush out to the pub or McDonalds as if it's going to be their last ever drink or meal.

It truly is pathetic.

I get what you are saying.

However I certainly & im sure many would struggle to exercise & travel without access to a bike. Mine actually broke last week & it was pretty important i got another sharpish.
Far better to travel on a bike imho than public transport. Im not suggesting all bike shops need to be open but you at least need to be able to either get one or get a repair somehow.

Eternal I agree it's pathetic but McDonald's knew exactly what they were doing and had loads of fresh food that they needed shifting.
They could have just donated it all to charity or front line workers and come out looking amazing, such a shame!☹

It's fair enough if Halfords was staying open too sell bikes but Sports Direct no way must be less than 5%of their overall sales.
