St.Johns Square

Always wondered why they bothered pedestrianising it and then started allowing busses, then taxis and now it's like anyone who wants to drive down there can, it's stupid.

But not as stupid as the benches in the middle of the road in Layton. Who the fuck wants to sit in the middle of a main road ?
Plumber 😁

Potential death trap in my view,an uneasy mix of pedestrians and traffic with no road markings, even the short time I was there a blissfully unaware fella talking to his mate was nearly taken out by an oncoming bus. Really hope I am wrong but it's a crazy scenario, even more so during decent weather and unsuspecting tourists.
I complained for the same reasons, especially with the fountain going and families with young kids assuming it’s a pedestrian area. Took me a while and persists to get a reply. The guy I spoke to assumed it was fully signposted to make traffic aware of the restriction, as it wasn’t at the time. He said they consulted with Blackpool transport who needed to use it. I pointed out it was one bus route who would provide a better service if it didn’t use it (more stops in town centre) he didn’t know it was just one bus and assumed it was more.
sad as I am it was when I was sitting in the Vetro lounge and noticed how bad it was that I also took phone pictures to add to complain. These showed multiple cars, lorries etc. Parked, turning, triple parked, deliveries etc near misses.

he did say he would ensure adaquate signage would be on display following the complain. And that they were looking at enforcement in the town areas for illegal driving use. this has started with market st about to have cameras fitted. I have gone back to him to ask if this will be extended to st johns square.

yep know I need a life

Agreed

I think they thought because our kit is a similar colour to Holland’s, they’d make the roads the same, probably forgot that they have a lot more bikes.

Both really, but I was referring to St John's Square, I agree about the benches on Westcliff drive though, totally stupid.

In the early 1940s I was at St Johns C of E school on Church St.
Cant' remember if it was every week or every month, we used to form up 2 abreast and march down Church Stto the Church.
Taking your life in your hands if you tried that now.
Had my first wedding there by Canon Yates, who was there in the early 40s.

It originally was totally pedestrianised, then the council messed with the one way system and realised they couldn't get the buses round the town and it became "shared space". It's not ideal, but as long as everyone uses common sense and stays aware of their surroundings its safe.

Only one bus uses it (17 south circular?) would be better if it went down Topping st as people would have another stop to use in the town centre. How do visitors with young families know it’s not a pedestrian area? Especially with fountains going and picnic seats out.

I think busses and taxis driving through the square is a good clue.

The Layton glitterati surely it’s an ideal spot and just adds to the cafe culture that’s taking hold there.

The problem with St Johns Square and the promenade outside the Tower is that it is extremely difficult if not impossible for blind people with guide dogs to differentiate between paths and roads as there are no kerbs.
