Staycation:Hotel vs Camping etc?

Gorgeous country hotel for us, with gorgeous food and gorgeous leisure facs and other gorgeous things. Can’t see the point in camping, glamping, tree housing, or staying in a Yurt in Yorkshire, on the Mongolian Steppe fair enough, but we all have our own mini break ideas what’s yours?

Camping’s alright when you’re young or if you have kids and want to do it for them .

Not for me . A mate of mine has gone to the Silverstone classic this weekend and asked if I wanted to go .

Thursday to Monday sleeping in a tent with four other hairy assed blokes.

No chance

Last time I went camping was with 2 of my daughters.
We got the tent out , pitched up, emptied the car and got everything out.
The girls said “what do we do now dad”
I said “we camp”
It was shit.
Pissed down
One of girls sick in night

vowed never again - hotels all the way for me.
bring on luxury every time

Sounds awful

First we did the Tenting
Then we went a Campervanning
Next up, a Caravan
But now its a Static
Far less dramatic
In fact we’ve cracked it 👍

Caravan does it for me.....spend most of time outdoors if weather is decent anyway but it’s spacious, cosy and comfortable with hot water, cooker, microwave, toilet, shower and decent kipping.....always got our two dogs with us so might struggle a bit in a camper van but they are great too for two people and you don’t have to tow.
I stayed in so many hotels with work and on package style holidays back in the day that I don’t really like staying in a hotel now unless I absolutely have to

We rented a cottage /barn in the Cotswolds in June for £700
Weather wasn't brilliant but OK, but really enjoyed it. A beautiful area of the country.
If you have a vulnerable person with you (like an 86 year old mother in law), you don't have to worry about covid.
Pretty remote, but we were 100 yards from the village pub, so happy days. Enjoyed a few hours and beers in the beer garden.Mrs Dave doesn't like camping, but we've stayed in static caravans on Parkdean and and other sites many times with the dog.

Went tent camping in my youth as a group & it was truly memorable & yes beer was involved. Took the kids a few times & I think they enjoyed it. Not been in a tent much these days as we use the caravan & we've had some great times her & there. Last time we stayed in a hotel, I realised just how convenient it was in the van, with everything to hand. Just hope we don't have any more events cancelled. Almost forgot things have changed a little since we now take the dog on holiday. 😀

That’s the other thing....cost.

me and the Duchess went to Cambridge for a week (6 nights actually) in the Caravan.....cost us circa £180. If I’d booked a Cottage etc down there it would have cost us circa £900.......and as I say I am outdoors most of the daylight hours anyway

Avoid Cornwall. Wow that was overpriced, underserviced and packed full of miserable locals not wanting you there.
Bit like Blackpool then...the locals I mean😉😉

..only joking😀

As for the original question...Not going anywhere this year other than Bloomfield Road on a day trip.😁 But definitely not a Tent👎

Just think camping, caravaning, etc is like home from home including cooking and washing up!

There's no right & wrong, it's just personal preferences.
Theres something great about camping, now and again, although women don't usually like it...

Having to build the tent, at one with nature, eating outside fry up, a fire or whatever.

I suppose you can do most of that from your van still.

Last time I went was with that borrowed tent, to park cliffe windermere, which is where I think we went many years ago....

Are you sure it wasn't Coniston Hall 🙄

As for motor homes (Grandad vans) can’t move in St Annes for them in summer, parked up with their collapsible chairs and tables noshing their own grub contributing nothing to our town, tight gits!

I’ve got a hotel on Oxford street booked for a London weekend in September and 2 separate nights away booked in lovely Yorkshire Dales pubs for B&B in September and October.
I have camped once and never will I ever do it again 🙄 I did take my 2 daughters and niece though when they were younger, and I the sole adult and the whole experiences was fraught with danger and inconveniences. It’s a big fat no no from me.

My caravan for currently on my 4th 2weeks away break this year love caravan CL 5 van sights. Always go where there are plenty of good gastro pubs nearby so good food to be had . This f14 nights costing me £175 brilliant. We're in rubble valley home on 13th so at the game on 14th. Going down to Ludlow food festival in September great life Caravaning

We did the Silverstone weekend ,me and my lad. Thurs to Monday absolutely loved it. Perfect weather, great racing, great laugh at night chlilling with others over a beer and a bbq. Great spending quality time with the boy.
Different ball game if it would have rained though .

Our little campervan was fine with loads of trips and dead handy parked on drive to set off wandering, however you were limited to where you could effectively get to on foot or bike - then the first Lab came along the bikes got left at home . Then he grew a bit so we swapped out for a nice two berth caravan and enjoyed the extra space and the freedom the car brought.

Then we got the second Lab - because there was a bit of space, which soon filled as he grew - the sleeping arrangements became less than ideal and a pain tbh so we went looking at a fixed bed type AND a larger car to tow it - you know what, demand for vans has gone through the roof and hardly any about for sale from dealers, the pain of a different car was too much as happy with what we have. It was also getting increasingly harder to book sites in the Lakes - which we love the most - through C&CC.

Idle curiosity took us to Westfield Caravans off Mowbray Drive and ended up looking at Static Vans. Big do’s little do’s we ended up looking round various sites to find somewhere to pitch one and have ended up at a fantastic site in the Lythe Valley and renting an oldish static till our new one replaces it in Oct/Nov - even has a securish garden for the dogs to have some space and brill view of tree plantations and hills out the front.

At just about a 75 min drive from home it’s far enough to feel like you are away from it all but close enough to be able to pop up at the drop of a hat - and get back for any home games etc.

Don’t think travelling abroad is going to get any easier in the next few years so its a nice compromise- for us anyway - but it ain’t cheap!!!

I'm away in Devon a week on Friday for 8 nights then moving onto weymouth for 7 nights in my motorhome really looking forward to it....when it's sunny & warm its brilliant....supposed to be going to Spain for our holiday & spending 3 nights travelling back up through France but covid put a stop to that plan

Where in the Rubble Valley are you. Stoneyhurst?

Gave up on camping years ago. Waking up in the middle of the night hearing water, opening up the inner tent to see my flip flop floating wa sthe last straw (opp The Old Dungeon).

Hotels good for city breaks, no longer.

Cottages for us. Got a week in Shropshire booked, 3 walks from the front door and a place where woodpeckers can be noisy and annoying first thing in the morning. Loads of peace and loads of action nearby.
