Summer transfer rumours thread.

Signing established championship players will cost you around 15000 a week, can we afford that?
Maybe 1 or 2 if you get rid of the non playing players and the not up to it types. Maxwell and Stewart must be on 6-7k between them, maybe more, throw in a new signing wage of say 5k, combine the 3 and you've got a 12k player- not a mill miles away from the 15k.

We are now a c/ship club and need c/ship players not golden gambles. Quality over quantity etc.

Not every signing has to be a player that will immediately be into the XI.
Yes but we can't field a team with not-ready-yet players. At least 1 CM and 2 or 3 offensive players that should be able to slot in. And compete with the ones that are here.
Also i forgot: bringing some quality from the begining will prevent a slow start of the season. Then the kirks, Beesleys, and Careys can take over and add dynamism

Precisely, and even if we could afford to sign established Championship players (10k-15k per week), we shouldn't because they-

1) Won't be as hungry as players from League 1 and League 2
2) Are a financial pitfall
3) Are much older so we'll get no sell on fee

Reading had a team full of established Championship players (Scott Dann, Baba Rahma, Liam Moore, Andy Yiadom, Danny Drinkwater, etc.) this season and would have gone down if it weren't for Derby being deducted points.

The reality is that it is not only more feasible, but better in the long term for us to sign players from League 1 and League 2 and mold them into Championship calibre players.

This was Keshi, Ekpiteta, Lavery, Gabriel, Beesley, etc's first year in the Championship and they all showed that they are not only capable of playing at his level, but excelling at this level.

I expect another Summer of links from players in divisions "below" the Championship, and I for one welcome it.

Fill your boots with League 1 and League 2's brightest stars Critch! 🍊

I agree and we won't field and XI with not-ready-yet players (as Critch has shown he won't put a player in if he doesn't think they're ready).

I have no doubt that we will make 2-3 signings that will slot right into the XI (like a Brannagan and a new LB maybe).

And those players who slot in won't necessarily have to be coming from the Championship either, a League 1 player like Brannagan is absolutely good enough to be considered Championship ready-made.

Think we will get more hunger and quality signing the best from League 1 and 2 who are on an upward curve in terms of age and potential than we would signing the types of middling 27 year old championship players that expect around 15000 a week.

A mix would be good. In theory that's where Keogh, Stewart and Madine come in, in practice it's not quite like that.

Definitely a balancing act, a few old heads with a good attitude with more being invested in potential and all of it affordable!
Don't think we will follow the high stakes gambling model that others have tried.

Are we still paying him or did we cancel his contract prior to the courtcase?
Thought he'd just been farmed out on loan for the rest of the season.
The club have option of a further year but I don't think they'll take it up.

No I don't think they will nor could afford it, but you can't keep collecting potential that takes up squad space and costs as well. Nor crocks or surplus players.

3 proper SL Prem loans are required if they can be afforded.

If they have the quality and attitude of Sterling those three players could easily be the difference in top 6 or bottom 6.

It’s good to speculate but let’s not forget this is the start of the silly season or better known as agents looking to generate a deal

The issue of paying a couple of new players £15k per week is that you start to introduce an imbalance to the wage bill.

So either jealousy kicks in and squad harmony falls (Sunderland have been a classic example of this) or you end up pushing your main squad 25 to £10-15k per week to keep harmony and then we are entering dangerous waters financially.

The model has to be as it is now. Best of the youngsters in the divisions below us and released Prem youngsters. A small number of loans and sell each summer to reinvest.

Agree with that, Chunky.
Hopefully we'll have a bit in the war chest too if Bowler goes (seems inevitable) and maybe one or two others can attract fees or be makeweight in a transfer.
That'd give us something to play with.

I'm optimistic EVERY transfer window, but it's mostly turned out rubbish...the least few years under Messrs Sadler and Critchley have given me reason to look forward to it with relish.

I can live with Bowler going by the way (especially if it's to a Prem club, not championship!), But I really really hope we can hang on to Big Marv 🧡

Quality doesn't come cheap and blooding proper goodun's from leagues below doesn't either, plus it's also a gamble.

I didn't mention 15k and no way could we afford that, what I did say is utilise the wages from highish earning players who aren't getting games and by putting 2 wages together you could attract a quality difference making starter.

As for jealous players, well in the main if the player is helping to get results then the team is getting it's bonus payments. More about the personality of the palyer coming in than his earnings imo.

Als with limited squad numbers you simply can't afford to collect 'ones for the future'.

SS won't go outside the current pay structure and that's the right thing to do, to ensure the safety of the club. Our incoming finances are well below many teams in the Championship, so Critch has to work within the current recruiting model. I'd like to see us dip into the overseas market, as we've done to great success previously.
If the end result of our recruitment strategy means we'll always remain a Championship club, then I can live with that, as everything about BFC under SS & the board, means we are a club to be immensely proud of.

Well it all depends on how much money SS has i suppose

If he sticks to the current policy it will probably be a mediocre season or will he try and compete with our rivals and sign a better quality player with Championship experience

Will have to wait and see how much ambition we have

I believe SS is ambitious but doesn't have the wealth to compete with other Championship teams toe to toe. We spend a tiny fraction of the top 8 or 10 teams budgets. We have to box very clever - and we do. We need to improve enough to gain an extra 15 points or so. And we should have had those in the last few games if we hadn't wound things down. We aren't that far off the play offs this season - and you'd hope we will do better next season. So there is very little scope for criticism IMO.

Saw him in the Lancs Cup and I don't think he's what we need.

No idea why we get sucked into these threads, nobody has a clue these days. The days of that fuckwit leaking snippets is long gone.

A 22 year old CDM on a free, he was one of the best players on a terrible team so he could be decent.

IMO it looks like he would be a long term replacement for Dougall and Stewart. Much like Beesley was brought in as a long term replacement to Madine.

Not every signing has to be a player that will immediately be into the XI.
After yesterday’s performance every signing has to be better than anyone we saw yesterday

After yesterdays abject display shouldn t we be asking who we can get rid of and how
long do those playing yesterday have left on their contracts?

It’s not going to be easy, championship quality players are going to be snapped up by clubs with bigger budgets than we have, so I guess the policy will be the same, look to find youn lower league prospects, and maybe a championship player coming to the end of his career like Keogh.

Mid table Championship is mediocre? No Phil, languishing in Div 3 and 4 is ** mediocre.
