Summer transfer rumours thread.

We've talked a lot on this thread about players we need to buy, but not so much about players we could get on loan.
Notts Forest had five players on loan, and they've done quite well, and may yet win the play-offs:

Keinan Davis (Villa)
Philip Zinckernagel (Watford)
Max Lowe (Sheffield United)
James Garner (Manchester United)
Djed Spence (Middlesbrough)

Perhaps we will focus more on bringing in quality loan players next season? Except for Stirling, the loan market didn't really work for us last year. On the other hand, they are probably expensive, and this may not fit the Blackpool model of buying young (cheap) overlooked players and developing them.
Wintle worked for us. Agree though, it's a way to add quality we can't afford to buy. Used judiciously.

The problem with those kinds of loans (Garner and Spence possibly excluded) is they tend to come with non-trivial fees attached, and the club will be on the hook for the entirety of their wages, so they don't really fit into the club's budget, so we're stuck with academy players who their parent club wants to send out for experience.

Whilst that's true, it's a way to add quality outside your budget. Without stating the obvious comparison(s), isn't it better to spend money on players who are going to improve the team rather than collect non-playing players?

Yes true, forest will have spent a lot on those loan players. It could pay back in multiples though. This weekend.

It depends on how much it costs to bring them in, I doubt that Forest saw much change out of £4m for the 5 players they borrowed this year, possibly nudging up towards £5m, that's way outside our budget.

Unless we can find someone who's completely surplus to requirements at their parent club, we've really only got the budget for academy players.

I think when you're at the top end of the PL they charge hefty loan fees for the quality, but can you see M'boro and SU(?) charging fees, more a case of shared wages I'd have thought.

I think you have to factor 2 quality loans into your budget and there are ways to do that moving forward.

Think the Sterling loan was heavily weighted on his appearances, so Chelsea were ensuring he got the game time he needed to progress. I think it is a very sensible model for a PL team to take, as the loanee is cheaper if he gets played regularly, and this would allow us to target stars of the future.

Max Lowe allegedly cost SU £3.5m, and Spence is supposedly off to Spurs for £15m, so I doubt either would've come cheap, and I doubt the clubs would've been keen on doing Forest a favour.

I can't see the likes of Zinckernagel and Davis being on less than £20,000 p/w, and I doubt that Forest would've got them for less than that, even Garner, although he's only 21, has a full season in the Championship behind him, the second half of which was spent at Forest last year, so he might not have been cheap either.

Knowing Forest's budget, I really don't think those players are going to have cost them much less than £4m for the season.

We got KDH didn't we?

Yes we did! I guess a club sometimes is really keen to get a player out on loan for Championship game time and will do a good deal. Especially in January maybe, if they have not had any meaningful action all season. But Sadler may have splashed out a bit then? To try to get us going when we were struggling - we brought in KDH Moore and Ronan. Might have cost us a few bob? We got Sterling via a negotiation over game time - apparently we paid more when he didn't play.

I suspect you know more than I, so fair enough.

Would be Grim to lose him but he's already a year into a 2 plus 1 contract and I'm sure we will choose to Maxi-mise our returns on him as I suspect we can use the money to Moore effect at the sharp end of the team.

Prior to injury Maxwell was doing a good job. It's harder to find attacking players without splashing some cash I think.
Deary me that was the opposite of puntastic

Thanks.

I just realised it was easily doable and seemed wrong to avoid it just for the sake of avoiding it. It just happened. Back off. 🤓

Simon has already said he won’t be spending big on players this season and I guess that’s because promotion isn’t on the agenda. He will want the club infrastructure to be completed first, so we have a ground capable of competing in the Premiership. He’ll be looking at consolidating again and will only spend in January if we’re near the bottom three. Steady progress.

It’s going to be a hugely difficult division next season with the addition of the three from the Premier plus Wigan and Sunderland. I understand that we cannot spend big but I just hope we spend enough to stay in the division. I’m not sure the present squad is up to that.

Morgan Rogers linked again. Winger (either side) from Man City.

On loan at Bournemouth last season, Lincoln the previous season. Proper Critch-style player.

Rogers scored 6 goals in 28 appearances in league 1 for Lincoln last season.

He was then signed by Bournemouth who saw him as someone who could help them earn promotion to the prem.

Didn't quite work out there but I think this would be a really exciting signing.

New contract for Will Squires Gate way to a great career perhaps.
Let's hope Maxi coaches Pickford to be a better kicker - soothing all our Catarrh worries.
