Sunderland v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 27.04.21

6 points taken from:
Peterborough
Sunderland
Pompey

4 points from:
Hull
Oxford

Unbelievable record against the top 7/8.
But there also lies our problem

We seem.to do it against the 'bigger' teams yet struggle to break down those that play us looking for a draw

It has certainly been a problem over the course of this season.

But if we can cross the line, it makes for brilliant reading going into the play-offs!

It's another game where we've played to the standard of the opposition. It's what gives me hope we might go up. That was as good a performance as you'll see and the goal was a peach.

I've said it before, but if Maxwell doesn't have time to think, he's a fine shot stopper and he proved it tonight. Did his job really well.

Good game but tense doesn't describe it.

Hopefully we've got another 6 games left of the season and we win the last one.

Something I mentioned the last time we beat Sunderland..

But I wonder how that Sunderland fan is doing who after we beat Peterborough, claimed they don't need to worry about us as they have 'the best squad in League One' and 'are going up automatically'.

Cheers for the 6 points in 10 days!

I can't believe that I've just watched that ! We were superb ! I had my doubts before the game which I posted, that was a masterclass ! 6 more of them and we're in the championship. Well done Critch !!!

Good view from behind KK
Apologies didn't see you posted, I just found it then going through the Sunderland forum reading their despair and posted it to my twitter. Figured I'd post it here as well but didn't see your post!

Great they get that multi-cam isn't it, we've missed seeing goals from different angles!

The better the opposition the better we play. Teams below us have raised their game against us and those around like the mackems under estimate us
True, first game was so early in the season its hard to judge compared to now though, and the second game we should have won by about 4 bloody goals!

Certainly not unbeatable IMO!

Don't gloat too soon, we may get them in the play-offs, beat 'em there then we can gloat.

I'm only gloating in reference to that one bloke who completely dismissed playing us twice in 10 days as a threat.

I'll still be nervous as anything if we get 'em in the play-offs!

No apology needed. Could watch it until the cows come home.

Just been on the Sunderland message board. Thought this was brilliant:
"Could do with a win but more chance of me getting sucked off by Kelly Brooke right about now."

There is some heart and guts in this team, and squad thatā€™s for certain.
They may not win games the easy way, but they take some bloody beating.

According to Scrafters Kaikai felt his hamstring and Ward felt his achilles. Too early to say the extent of the injuries according to NC!

He's an excellent keeper. His positioning is brilliant. That and awareness / reading of the game are, for me, the things that single him out. At just over 6 ft he's tall enough.
I'm not disagreeing. I wasn't saying Maxwell's not tall enough. I'm just thinking aloud how the owners of top clubs see it.

After tonightā€™s game, why not visit Radio 1xtra with Jamz Supernova to chill those tense bones. Nice.

Will depend on the team put out. I know I've said this before, but they are tired from all the recent fixtures. NC needs to squad rotate, otherwise little will have changed from Saturday. If that turns out to be a sacrifice for this game, so be it - at least the squad will be fresh for Saturday. Stewart apparently is back in contention too, so let's give him a start alongside Gabriel, Ekpiteta, Husband, Robson. and Mitchell Over half a "new" team there to build around.
Replying to my own post here. NC did make changes but not to the extent I thought necessary before the match. All I can say is that he got this completely right and we have the makings of an outstanding Head Coach here. All he needs is more experience. By this time next year we could be hanging on to him in the face of high demand for his services. In the meantime I'm optimistic that he can get this club into the Championship, anf if we do make the play offs there will be an opportunity for players to rest and recharge their batteries.

It was definitely a horrible first half and I'd add Thorniley to that, that block near the end was out of this world. He appeared from nowhere as Mcgeady was pulling the trigger.
Disagree we took the sting out of Sunderland in that first half, and they only looked like scoring when we were playi g the land of the giants towards the end.

No, I'm not saying we played really badly, I'm saying it was a dire watch as a spectacle. We didn't have it going on going forward at all though we did work very hard, keep good shape and gradually get control.

We really need a Wes Hoolahan and hopefully are searching the leagues for one now. We are organised but lack the ability to unlock defences.

I rarely disagree with you but I do on this and said so at half time. No the 1st half wasn't free flowing, attacking football with lots of goals.
But I enjoyed the way we stifled Sunderland, the way we nullified their two main threats and more than anything I appreciated the unbelievable physical effort once gain from physically tired players.
It some ways we didn't play as well in the 2nd half if you are looking at possession and control of the game. But then we had Sullay's goal of the season, 4 magnificent saves from Maxwell, last gasp blocks from Thorniley and others, a clean sheet and we are nearly all (with a few notable exceptions) Critchley fans again and lauding a magnificent result, which it absolutely was.
