Sweden

Remind me, weren't they the ones to copy because they didn't have to bother with lockdown because of the sparse population etc?
I posted this 2 weeks ago when Covid-19 cases had started to rise to alarming levels and no one was reporting it.
So after not implementing any kind of lockdown and pubs/restaurants/shops all remained open the Swedes seemed they were immune to it all, really?

I dont think we should be commenting on any other country TBF. We have had numerous lockdowns and measures and still have over 60,000 deaths and some of the worst figures in the world. A ruined economy and millions out of work. Huge mental health issues and an NHS with a massive backlog. Sadly, I could keep going but I wont as today should be about hope.

Nothing wrong Gareth in pointing out countries who did nothing in the early days of Covid are now paying for it for doing absolutely nothing.
We keep having America rammed down our throats on the news/media and being told how bad things are over there.
I just hope the antilock down brigade take note but I seriously doubt it.

But using our measures didnt work either! No one knows the answer apart from a cure.
I just find pointing out another countries perceived failings a bit in bad taste looking at our own failings.

The first countries who went in to lockdown although initially sky rocketing at first are now the lowest infected areas even the UK are in a trending downward spiral projection it’s been a long slog but seriously where do you think we would be if we didn’t have these lockdowns? A medical report back in March prior to the first lockdown suggested as many as 500,000 people could have died in this pandemic.
Granted 60,000 is 60,000 too many and yes we’ve had are problems but it’s way off the 500,000 first forecast so we must have done something right.

500,000 was worst case scenario figures quoted by our friendly scientists. They are good at that. I also heard 20,000 deaths quoted as being a bad figure so.....

Only two thirds of the deaths per million people in Sweden compared to the U.K. Italy, Spain, France all much higher.

I’m not sure that the actual data justifies the headline, much like it didn’t when Jaffa posted it last time...

Sweden has managed the epidemic their own way, largely maintained the economy wherever possible, kept the kids in school etc...

Of course, they are not immune to the virus (nobody is), so I’m not sure why we should be surprised that they might need to take similar measures to everyone else as we enter winter.

Swedens population density is less than a 10th of the UKs.

If only 6m people lived on this Island our figures would be far better.

If they had done more early chances are they would have saved lives like their nordic neighbours.

I was interested in how Belarus was coping since they decided no distancing, no lockdown, no sporting cancellations and no ban on mass gatherings were necessary. 1,649 more coronavirus cases were confirmed in Belarus in the past day, with the overall number of such cases at 150,602 or 1.58% of the country’s population and a total of 1,222 deaths since the outbreak. People are requested to wear face masks in public places and a vaccination campaign as part of post-registration tests of the Russian Sputnik V anti-coronavirus vaccine kicked off in Belarus on October 1.

Seems like ignoring the virus has had a fairly benign effect on the country.

20000 was a good result according to a govt. lecturn and 50000 the other extreme.

60000 is way more than it should have been and that could have been lower had we done a proper lockdown first time round- closed the borders to non-essential travel and enforced quarantine and not made it a 'please stay alone' request. Had we carried on lower numbers and lower spread would have followed.

Borders should've been shut straight away yes.

That and keeping the lockdown intense also banning leisure travel to x miles would have suppressed the bugger such that, in looser times it would have taken longer to re-emerge in numbers.

Someone from Barrow was in the ferry cafe in Fleetwood on Sunday. They couldn't understand why they couldn't sit inside so the owner asked him where he was from.
Why would you go to a tier 3 area from a tier 2? Ridiculous.

I know sailors who do that route for pleasure.

Travel between tiers isn't allowed isn't it? doesn't stop people though. Thick as pig- should rename the Union Jack, I'm alright Jack.

Yes, but you can go to the pub in Barrow!
Have you been to any pubs in Barrow? It's either Wacky Warehouse or wacky locals. One pub( The O...) you'd ask for a menu and you'd get it, read it......DVD £20, Toshiba 32" £50, assorted shed tools £35. The food one was shorter, Pork Scrathing(see last item on previous menu), £1, KP nuts.....
