Swindon away day memories?

Anyone remember when the Queen Mum had died just after we'd been to Swindon?
Yes I remeber that day ... Couldnt work out why the radio stattions were only playing sombre music on the way home ... dont know if we won or lost though 🙂
Also seem to remeber James Quinn scoring a penalty there in our promtion that never was season !! Steve McMahon was the swindon manager too 👍

Winning 6-2 away. Macari was their manager. Night game. 60 of us in the away end . 4-1 at half time. They pulled one back early 2nd half and we all shit it.

I've never seen us beat Swindon at their place.

It's a bit weird for me that Blackpool are playing 2.4 miles away and I can't go watch it.

Just after I started working in London (July 1984) I joined Basil and went with them to the County Ground in October for a wonderful 4-1 defeat. At the start of the game I didn't realise we were playing in blue and when we opened the scoring on 12 minutes I thought it was a goal against. This prompted one fan to wonder why I wasn't cheering...I seem to recall an expletive or two in the question.

I didn’t even know that she supported us. A member of BASIL I assume 🤔
Yup she used to nip into the 'Stute for a shandy when oop north for the National at Aintree, and occasionally brought the dogs along.

I know because I was corgi registered at the time.

I remember 2001 running for what I thought was my train at Paddington and just making it.
I then found out that it wasn't my train and it was going to Penzance and the first stop was Plymouth!
I got to Plymouth at 2 and decided to watch them play out a 3-3 draw, we ended up grabbing a last minute equalizer from memory.
Ended up back in London at about 11, what a crap day!

Won 5 nil there once when John Gorman was manager and also a pre season friendly where we spent the duration in the adjacent cricket pavilion.
Anyone ever do an afternoon's boozing in there?

Memories of an evening fixture possibly fifty years ago. Stopped at the Moonrakers Pub after the game with three friends, oblivious to what was in store. Driving a Singer Chamois at the time, the water pump packed up .Towed to a garage at Cricklade by a most helpful Police patrol.
Unfortunately the situation deteriorated, with transport back home appearing to be problem. Cutting a long story short, we ended up walking .
( Approximately 60 miles to Lydney ). Did not go to work that day. I am still wondering what happened to the RAC

Was there for the night game 7th April 1970 , a 1-1 draw on the run in to promotion . I remember a few of us gathering on the terrace at the home end a fair while before ko , but got swiftly moved on when the locals finally arrived ! Swindon were also pushing for promotion, and the place was absolutely rammed , 28, 000 in .

My abiding memory is of the stewards, unfortunately, who are easily the most obnoxious and inflexible that I have ever encountered.

I also remember not so many years ago when there was a huge row on here when Poole-Pool accused a load of us of being a clique who were ganging up against him. As it happened, we had merely been drinking together in the Glue Pot in Swindon a couple of days before. 😀

Yep , me too. A tremendous atmosphere there and we were a bit lucky to come away with a draw courtesy of a Mickey Burns equaliser before
half time. I think they scored within the first 5 minutes.

Only been twice to Swindon. Once when Ainscow got sent off and when James Quinn scored from the spot when they were managed by Steve Mcmahon

Swindon Away 1980

Hope the link works, from Phil Heywood Photography website, featuring some good shots of Pool fans celebrating a goal. First game of the season under Alan Ball, won 2-1 .
Fairly wild outside on the park after the game. Several coaches. We had an extra passenger on the way back, who slept the whole way. Unfortunately for him we were heading to Lancaster, he was from Fleetwood.

Was slightly tipsy last time I was there. Stopped in cirencester I think. Tony Ellis played and maybe scored a penalty. Remember throwing up on the minibus on the way back 😁

Yep, only been the once. Stopped in Cirencester and drew 1-1. and yep it would have been the 1-1 draw with Quinn penalty.

As a 17 year old Seasider, that day felt a little like the 300 Spartans! 😂

Happy days.

That’s me on the fence at Swindon with my Clash t shirt on ,also went to a night game there !

Brilliant!! One of my favourite BFC photos. I've got a programme from the following home game. Its in that you could probably get it on ebay if you wanted it. Think it was against Rotherham or Everton in the League Cup. Would've loved to have gone to away games then but too young. Although I did go to PNE in the Anglo Scottish Cup a few weeks before that. There's pics of that game on the same site.

Went to that one as a 17 year old on the supporters club coach after bunking off college for the afternoon....... wish I hadn’t bothered at 4-1 down 🥲

Ha..I was at that too ...gates closed before kick off as it was as you say rammed.Eldest brother lived in Didcot at the time and only just made it in before they closed the gates.
1 1 and the precursor to Deepdale and Promotion😀😀😀😀..not long after...another sell out and possibly the best evening game ever...though Forest Away in 2010 has to be nearly as good.....third one is the Arsenal Replay in the FA cup when we somehow came back from two down to win.My great( sadly no longer with us)friend from Uni Anthony Manasco ( some of you may well have been taught Maths by him) came with me for that match and I am sure it gave him the taste for the Gold Coast area.

My memory has us 4-0 up at HT and I was still convinced we were going to lose.

To my eternal shame I can remember singing "Go home and feed your pigs" and shouting it out of the window of the supporters coach as we drove through their town.

Went on the Beattie coach in 1980. The old Division 3.
We'd had a great pre-season under our new manager (Alan Ball), and then won our 1st league game away at Swindon.
Everyone thought we were going to have a great season and there was a very impressive crowd of over 10,000 for the next home game, against Rotherham, but we only drew 1-1.

Remember a game when Zarko Grabovic had something to do with a late equaliser for us. But the thing that pissed everyone off that day was that Swindon charged 22 quid to get in - in 2005....

Swindon was one of my last grounds to obtaining #92 (Now #88 courtesy of Covid and not been able to go to Barrow or Harrogate Brentford or Wimbledon 🙄)

It was late season 2015/2016 and we lost 3-2.

I went on a minibus with Bob’s Luxury Travel, with TAM.
Bandagem RAM & Lord Of The Manor were with us on the bus too.

On the way back we tested this breathalyser I had and we all failed it miserably 😀 bar our driver and WPC’s daughter 🤣🤣

West Paddock Casual was given a lift back with his daughter, after such a crap performance he didn’t fancy one of his “Landmark Train Journeys”
back home.

I’m pretty sure Owen Oyston was there with Les Holding in the far stand.

I remember Bandagem and RAM walking in front of the minibus as it exited of the ground proudly holding the “LOVE BLACKPOOL HATE OYSTON” Flag.

At that time I’d gone “Away Games Only” only to go “Not A Game More” the following season.

Great company that day but we went down that season for the second year running under Karl Oyston’s Stewardship.

Very bad & sad days (under the Oystons) that I’m now only too happy to forget.

Life under Simon Sadler is a different world today 🌎 🌞 ⚽🧡

Hope Critch & the Boys get revenge gor losing that day (not that I cared that we lost that day) by winning today.

UTMP!!!! 🚌#88

August 2003. None of the Stains were available to attend the game so a group of ‘sensible’ sponsors were asked to represent the club at the game. About 30 of us chartered a plane and flew into RAF Lyneham. Beer was flowing. Got to the game and a few sarnies were laid on but more importantly more beer. Took our seats in the Directors box and sang pool songs all through the first half. Got asked to quieten down at half-time so we ditched the Directors box for some seats near the away end. 2-2 draw in the end. We never were invited to represent the club again for some reason!
