Reading the Guardian this morning got me to thinking about the way political discourse in our country had become so coarse, so aggressive. I believe that much of this has to do with the way that on-line social media had enabled anybody to put their twopenneth up for consideration without having to justify it, explain it or even moderate it. Moreover, we know that the platforms aren't doing anything significant to moderate the nasties and the hate-mongers.

It, therefore, comes as a welcome point of censorship this morning to see Admin's note about things becoming a little out of hand on this Board. I actually think we largely rub along quite well on the whole. It's instructive that we can tear each other to shreds on the politics forum then have a jovial chat about the match on the football forum. Even so, we can all benefit from a quick reprimand and the timing of this one is particularly apposite given recent events in our country.

I posted very occasionally on the old Board but found it a very challenging place to have a discussion. I hope we can keep this new Board a bit more inclusive and welcoming. Anyway, just my views, for whatever they're worth.

There’s no balance 66. Some posters can spout whatever they want and not get their posts removed. Where’s as others are constantly scolded and have posts removed. It comes from both sides of the argument but it seems one side is vilified more than the other. And you probably know who I mean. It’s my opinion on the matter. I have taken a back seat on the politics board as it’s becoming pointless to try and debate anything without it turning into a complete shit show of abuse from both sides.

I don't think this site is bad, I'm not seeing anything overly aggressive or heated. There are the odd spats and differences of opinion but I've never felt it get out of control. Social media is a different animal with legions of botts revving up folk, like minded weirdos coming together etc. It can be very nasty and the likes of twitter and Facebook need to resolve it, whether they will is an entirely different matter, it's in their own interest to keep things controversial.

Perhaps I don't see it as closely as you do Scara. I've had one post removed and one edited. Both were deserved. I've also found myself apologising to other posters the morning after I let too many beers speak for me the night before. But, hey, that goes with the territory to an extent and we all have to deal with it in our own ways.

Agree with the Admin post as have witnessed harsh words, bullying and some tolerated more than others whom push their political agenda. This is a real shame because there are some really stimulating and interesting debates when allowed to flow. There is some really good stuff that comes from this board.

1966 etc, the problem being that people can hide behind an anonymous name.
They think they can say anything they like and no one will know who they are.

To me, those who use anonymity simply to be nasty are weak. I don't think we have any like that but it seems to exist on the wider social media. I say, seems to: I don't do Twitter or Facebook.

Where it irks is where certain posters get personal, time and time again. Making a total judgment on a person, usually based on some previously made opinion a poster has made.
If we let the opinion stand yet sacked off anyone who gets personal for a week or two that may help.
It happens on both sides, absolutely both sides of the political persuasions on here.
No need to be nasty or full of hate, it’s divisive, tiring and hugely negative for all concerned.
Maybe debate with respect and lighten up in some cases. You’re a long time dead. Far too long to spend your living years full of angst.

If what you say regarding inconsistent treatment is correct, it might be an idea to consider whether it is the moderator who has an agenda.

Or alternatively, is it a debate or just getting personal? In over 20 years I've never had a post removed or edited. Am I just lucky?

Wiz

IF - that says IF - there is inconsistent treatment of posters, surely it would be common sense to consider whether the moderator had an agenda.

It comes as no surprise to hear that you have never had a post amended or deleted in over 20 years as I would not expect you to make posts outwith the rules of the board - I'm sure that technically you will have contravened the rules at times but certainly nothing worth commenting on.

I can't say that I have been posting on this board for as long as your goodself - I think I've done about a 12 stretch - but I have also never made a post that seriously contravened the rules yet I have been banned maybe 3 or 4 times - including once for more than a year.

When I have been banned I have tried to discuss things politely with the moderator and have been largely ignored, they have never once been able to refer me to any post which I have made that contravened the rules, the best that he has come up with is that "several posters do not like your posting style".

I think that I should be allowed to offer non abhorrent opinions in an appropriate manner, regardless of whether I am popular or whether my opinions are popular or not.

It's not a popularity competition.

Fair enough.

No wizard, you know where the line is as regards insulting another poster. We have clashed on here , we have different opinions but I would always like to think we could put differences aside, find common ground over a pint .

I couldn't agree more.

I think Wiz is the sort of person, I'd argue you with in person over a pint, curse him over a disagreement but then couldn't wait for the next debate.

I'm not one for blowing smoke up folks @rses and he only stuck his rod out for compliments so I won't go on.

I too have been posting 20 years on the various incarnations of the board - never had a post removed either, but then people still think I’m a new poster 😂

It's far better than it used to be. I stopped posting for months because it was so bad that I thought I was on a PNE site and you wouldn't have thought that we all support the same club ;)

66; I don't think certain MP's help the situation. They're leading communities and the country, but all too often they abuse other MP's / the Prime Minister.
This happens on a regular basis, and usually against the cabinet members, but two recent examples: Angela Rayner a week ago used unacceptable and aggressive name calling against Boris Johnson & none of her colleagues condoned it. And yesterday Harriet Harman said when she first joined parliament, she vowed never to like a Conservative MP.
All parties need to remember their position and the important role they play in influencing society.

I went to school with Wiz and he’s always been an argumentative git 😀However, he’s never anonymous. Him and 20’s know who each other are when they are at it hammer and tongs.
I’ve posted my name on here numerous times . I’ve got nothing to hide. Let’s all do the same

I'll make one observation on a key part of the o/p. Sure we can tear each other apart on this side of the board and as the o/p says get along just fine on the football side of the board which I think is the case for me not only with the o/p'er but a good few others as well. But let's not get away from the fact that there are a significant number of posters who rarely and I mean rarely ever contribute to the football side. So how can you "rub" along with someone on there if they never post. on it?. Sure, it's their choice but what was initially created as a football forum has imo now attracted too many agenda driven people whose aim is to spread discord in an aggressive manner and who have no or little interest in BFC..

You make a good point 20’s, and there is surely some way of ensuring that participants on AVFTT contribute also to the core purpose of supporting BFC and football more generally.

If participants only or primarily use AVFTT as a forum for their political views, then they should be banned, permanently. I have no particular political allegiance and find most of the debates interesting, but for those who’s only real interest is promoting their political bias, there are surely more appropriate forums.

Fair comment but sadly that sort of language is not new nor is it confined to any particular side.

In the 1945 Churchill compared Clement Attlee and his Labour Party to the Gestapo. And that was someone who’d been his partner is the war against the real Nazis for the last five years.

Well I didn’t want to start pointing* fingers. I’ve swallowed the pill and excepted less involvement on this side.

You should never be bullied for denouncing mayonnaise. 😔

Have you ever considered your feelings towards mayonnaise might be explained by Julia Kristeva's post-structuralist psychoanalytic abjection theory?🥚😏😀
Mayonnaise provokes strong reactions sometimes. I enjoy a little spread on a pizza occasionally. 😀😀😃😃

You may have a point there 20s.

I was one of her case studies. But I don’t remember her spreading any oily substance on me to provoke a strong reaction. 🧐😆

No problem Scara, I wasn't asking you to point the finger at anybody, I was just suggesting the cause of your perceived inconsistent treatment of posters.

It is a shame that you feel the need to bail but you know what's best for you.

What I can't quite fathom, is how quoting word for word from the deputy leader of the opposition can see a post removed.

I didn't even insult anybody, just suggested that her words contribute to dehumanising politicians and that's not a good place to be.

I can't remember ever insulting anybody on here, just disagreed with them.

The title of this Forum is 'News, Covid-19, Politics and AVFTT etc'
That's clear enough to say almost anything you want on this Forum.
'etc' is for adding almost anything to a list. (Oxford English Dictionary).
Hope that's cleared it up etc.😉

In Belgium you can get a mayonnaise called Calve. They do a citron (lemon to you lot) flavour which is ace with some fries

"You lot". Is this what you learn from cheap holidays to Belgium? 🤣

Pay a bit more - you'll get to France!

BTW where are Cats and 20's? 😆
