The Fear of Covid

I’m interested following a debate I had today with 3 x CEOs of large Gym and Leisure Centres on a zoom call.

Has the fear of Covid and it’s reported damaging effect on the obese or unexercised changed your lifestyle approach since March?

I have seen a great number of people in my wider circle really change their life through lockdown and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Just wondering how many Avftt’ers have made the “change”?

Not really, but if your fat and lazy you Should make an effort.

Just an observation made by my lad, who is a member of the Uni gym at Lancaster, on the effect Covid has had on the gym he has a contract with.

He was telling me that he can rarely get a booking slot at the gym now due to customer number restrictions and the over demand.

Whilst registering that with the manager, he asked if the gym would be allowing any of the 14000 returning students to join when they return to Uni next week, or would they now be restricting further memberships.

The manager said he "couldn`t turn down any business."

Which seems a little unfair on the existing members already struggling to access the gym.

So I suppose his lifestyle has changed because of Covid from 3 times a week gym to once every 3 weeks!

The increase in people exercising could be connected to that lockdown we just had where the government stopped people doing absolutely everything apart from existing and exercising for an hour a day.

Maybe 🙃

That’s one of the restrictions that’s hurting the revenues of the gyms. They’ve got increased costs and have all been told they have to implement a booking system for both classes and workouts.
Added to the booking system they have enforced reduced capacity by the Govt so for many it’s crippling.
One group that has nearly 400 locations had had to already close 15 of them as they just cannot cover the losses being made.
All said, with winter coming and the virus making a notable return - id be worried if I was overweight and not exercising daily.

Im sure some have adopted a more healthy lifestyle & that is good 👍 .
Unfortunately many will have gone 'the other way',

Its made my situation worse & affected both my mental & physical health tbh.
I have never really been one for Gyms but used to enjoy swimming.
I have not been able to do this for months and it has not been 'good for me'
I have eaten more, drunk more alcohol and put on over a stone.

I agree , the advantages lockdown brought have come with great disadvantages for many, unfortunately.
I’m very grateful I am a key worker and still got my walk to work and back in every day. Without that necessity motivation for some will definitely have waned.
We’ve had the opportunity to work from home going forward, it’s a flat no from me because I need the push of routine to keep me healthy and focused 👍

I used to swim a lot but I stopped when Fylde Council closed the only local pool - really crap council (back in Blackpool now thankfully)
But that was long before lock-down. I now keep weight off by walking my avatar (I'm retired). Even when I was "fit" (swam about 100 lengths 4 times a week) I was around the 14 stone mark. I walk quicker these days (so I'm told) mainly on Starr Gate Beach 5 miles a day. So I have managed to keep my weight around the same.

However, my lad has banged weight on because he went to the gym a lot, but has since lost his motivation due to lockdown and being made redundant due to C-19 sadly.

Is it not more unfair to want to prevent any new members from wanting to join...because he's already in it? If he wants to go more often, he needs to nail down the booking system and work it to his advantage. Or - join another gym as well? Instead?
Of course, he could exercise outdoors. It's free - and the countryside around Lancaster is quite extensive 😀
