The Germans

Went to Berlin 5 years ago and had a great time, did a couple of tours and had a good look around. Got leathered riding a bike round a food and beer tour, love to do that again. Loads to do and things to see. Then went to cologne two years ago, a little less touristy and a very very pretty town, both places serve great ales....nod towards the kolsch that is only brewed in cologne, stunning. Would absolutely love to go back to Germany soon and visit the black Forrest, and Iā€™ve noted plenty of medieval towns that look superb. Granted Iā€™ve only been for 6 nights in total but I was so impressed how clean the areas were and there didnā€™t appear to be any ā€œchavsā€ knocking around and causing a nuisance. They canā€™t half knock a decent ale out

Been on plenty of footy trips staying in Cologne. Mainz, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Freiburg, Dortmund and Hamburg

Also been on non-footy trips to Berlin ( albeit during a World Cup ) and Nuremberg

Love the cities ( particularly the Aldstadt areas ), culture, history and their approach to football

Never had a bad experience yet and can't wait to return

Which was your favourite city (not including your football experience)

Now on Channel 5, The World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys goes through Bavaria and to the Southern Alps. Fabulous. Catch it on 5+1 at 11pm or later on My5

Did a festival in Freiburg town centre. Lots of small brewery stalls, bratty stalls and a good band on. Hire or buy a glass and go for it. Happy memories.

Some of us have moved on from things that happened 80+ years ago.
Pity the BLM protesters had to pull all those statues down and go on about slavery.
Eh more than 80 years ago but they still go on about it.
Totally agree with you CCF skiver best to leave things in the pastšŸ‘šŸ»

They must have been having a day off when I went to Hamburg.
Will have to return for a second chance

If you go to Cologne, make sure you go into the Cathedral.
There are the most wonderful stained glass windows I have ever seen. I just went slowly round and stared at them for ages.
MrsDP had to shake me and say we had to go.

Nah - Iā€™ve done most the big Xmas markets over there.

Hamburg Christmas Market is brill and the alternative one is much much much better šŸ˜œ

I lived in Germany (Frankfurt) for 18 months - everywhere is brill apart from Frankfurt as itā€™s boring as .......
I was in Wiesbaden and the Oberursel šŸ‘
Frankfurt is alright for a night out or a beer on the river restaurants.

Occasionally itā€™s ok - try living there šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

There are very few bars / Beer Kellerā€™s in Frankfurt. There are a fewApple Wine places where you get rather drunkies for very little - but I am not the biggest fan of Apple Wine.

What they do well is the odd street festival in summer and the Xmas market.

The best fun bit is the Sachsenhausen area, but pretty much every bar allows smoking inside and doesnā€™t get busy until very very very late on a Friday or Saturday.

The most boring place I have ever lived!!!!

Similarly for me, in Sainte Chapelle in Paris. The first sight of the stained glass windows upstairs literally takes your breath away. Stunning.

Would like to visit Dresden.
we did a four day trip a couple of years ago to Berlin.. xmas markets were great...then got the train to Prague for 2 days...but when you book german trains you are allowed to book a break in the journey...so we got off at Dresden for 3 hours then continued on to Prague. I didnt mind Dresden Mrs wasnt as keen.
Bremen is another place worth visiting.

533 steps to the top of the spire. I was knackered when I got to the top, but the view was worth it.

A few bits about Germany, a country I have visited a few times.

Cologne as has already been pointed out is a great place, The chocolate museum is worth a visit although I got myself in trouble looking at some of the old equipment in there and telling my wife due to the lack of guarding this sort of machinery would not be allowed today. I was told she had come to enjoy the visit not get a lesson in health & safety. Whoops.

The Black Forest is beautiful, we stayed in a hotel in Alpersbach, and little English was spoken in the area, but the locals were very welcoming. The drive down from Rotterdam was good and didn't take too long. The owner of the Hotel was a Herr Blutax which translated means Blood Axe, A day trip to Baden Baden was disappointing so I renamed the place Boring Boring.

A trip down the Rhine from Koblenz with stops at Bopard and Rudesheim was wonderful and introduced me to German Red wine, which is similar to their white and a very light wine. The gorge where the Lorelei Rocks are is magnificent.

I had a close scrape some years ago in Hamburg, when on a brewery trip with other licensees, our plane was diverted due to fog and we completed the trip to Hamburg, after a long day, by coach from Munich. I was first down in the bar we had chosen and ordered my beer, went and sat down and relaxed, briefly closing my eyes and awaiting my fellow licensees. I heard a German voice say 'You are English Bastard Yah?' I ignored him and he repeated the question. the guy was about six foot tall and had a neck that appeared to be the width of his shoulders basically looked like an ogre. Alarm bells rang in my head and I got hold of a large glass ashtray that was on the table. As quick as a flash a larger guy came over, thumped the Ogre and threw him out of the bar. The larger guy came over to me, he was the landlord, and apologised saying I was most welcome to stay. I've never forgotten that and was pleased to see my colleagues arrive shortly afterwards.

A lovely country, great people, on the whole, and very welcoming.

Whilst living in Germany in the late eighties I bought tickets for me and a mate (living in England) for what I assumed would be the deciding match of the group stage of the 1988 Euros, against Russia - little did I know. We were already out when the match took place. The Balmy Army was horrible but fortunately, because I got the tickets At a ReisebĆ¼ro we were in a non-aligned part of the stadium. 3-0. three bloody nil!
Anyway, my point is, whilst queuing to get into the ground - through a public park - we were all treated to the sight of two nubile 20 something ladies playing frisbee - au naturalle. Best part of the day.

Went to Germany for the first time last year. What a wonderful place and great people.
I went to Nuremberg in 2006 for about 5 days. Watched England beat Trinidad 2-0. Stadium was next to the steps where Hitler did his massive rallyā€™s. There were fans stood on the steps doing nazi salutes. Which you can get arrested for. Great place though, good food and really great people. Would go back sometime.

Yep great place did Munich and the German Lakes(Stanburg)couple of years ago.
Fantastic people and didn't find it overly expensive only problem was my phone didn't work all the time I was there and had to go oldskool and buy a map.šŸ˜
Love Ammersee area south of Munich. Played footy there 6 times, love the place.
