The implications of no promotion

Always thought this would make an interesting thread as we went in to the Play Offs but didn't want to jinx it - so the implications if we'd not been promoted. Thoughts?

I'll kick off with we'd have lost Jerry Yates
I'd say a good 2,000 less ST Holders
No chance of Ballard or Simms

-Playing in Papa John's trophy
-Losing Yates
-Much tougher division next year with clubs like Wigan and Ipswich now having money.

My big worry was that we’d stay trapped in League One for several years and lose the momentum of new ownership.
It is a difficult league to get out of, from the right end anyway and next season looks tougher than last.

Pretty sure we could’ve been competitive even with the likely loss of Jerry and the loanees, but it’s certainly looking a more competitive division. Ipswich throwing money around, Wigan rebuilding, the world’s most massivist club arriving, Rotherham doing their usual physical, well-drilled thing, Sunderland still there

Biggest money ever getting splashed about in league 1 this year wages of 10k a week being offered, we definitely chose the right time to leave it behind.

I thought about this when the none use of VAR for the final was discussed on the EFL Quest show.
If we hadn't made it some Championship Club vultures would have been circling for Jerry and possibly Dougall, Ward and Stewart.
We'd definitely have seen the last of Ballard and Simms as well.
That's what's making it so joyous now knowing we don't have to worry too much about players being lured away.

Who knows...but who thought we would lose? I certainly didn't. And that wasn't me being cocky I just knew.

But if we hadn't I still think Yates would have stayed.. really do

That’s why it was important to seize the opportunity. Rather than assume we’d challenge automatic next season based on our second half season performances. If we’d kept all our players it would have been likely. But sometimes you only get one sniff.

I don’t think that we’ll see Ballard and/ Simms next term. Parent Clubs won’t be keen on their players getting too used to playing for the same Club in successive years. They would also want their players to gain the experience of getting used to a different environment, with different training
regimes, different teammates….etc.

It's a bit insulting towards Jerry Yates. I know we see that largely these days players have loyalty to divisional status rather than their employers but...even so. Do we just assume he has no loyalty to the Pool?

Im very confident we would have gone up next season. When Sadler promises he delivers.
I'm not so sure. Sometimes teams just click and it's that season or not. Look at Oxford, had an appalling start and only just snook in to the Play Offs. I didn't expect it this season but as the season went on I just got the feeling it would be our best chance. As others have said, more about how strong League One will be next season than what we'd be like. I'd sooner be aiming for 21st in the Championship than top two in League one!

This was my concern too. Sadler full of piss and vinegar right now and throwing money around, but I was worried that enthusiasm could wane if it didn't have positive results over the first couple of seasons.

Some clubs never learn do they? League One and below is all about 'a team' and not 'an individual. Where so many clubs go wrong.
