The Old Yates Building (Talbot Sq.)

Walked past the Old Yates building (now Premier Inn) a few days ago.
Got to say, looking from the outside, the building looks impressive.

The biggest surprise to me, that I didn't know about, is that there is a large bar/pub on the ground floor, (which is already fitted out and looks ready to go).
Looks bigger than the Old Yates's bar too.

Took an age to get plannimg permission, but first impressions are good.
Good to see they are doing long overdue works on the outside of The Clifton Hotel as well, on the junction of Talbot Square/promenade.

And going inland, up Talbot Rd, I also notice that eyesore (Wilkinsons building) has all but been demolished.

Some Good Progress at last 👍

Anyone know what is happening with the old Savoy bowl building. There is been scaffold up now for years and nothing has been done. It's a shame because it is a nice Art deco building too. The council really need to come down on the owners of these buildings and make them get them up to scratch.savoy-blackpool-cropped-678x381.jpg

Remember going in Bosley Grill with Mummy and Daddy as a kid for lunch and vaguely seeing something in the Tivoli. Yates and Addisons above and a strip club for a while. Had some memorable meals in Carriages. Same owners as Guys Court. Remember Cafe de Europe, wine bar, cocktails bar.

That brought back some memories.I Also remember being taken in to see films with Mum in the early 60s and I am sure there was a pet shop in the arcade that had windows with pups. kittens etc. on display. Edit to add - we never went in the strip club though.☹️

There was indeed a quality pet shop there. Show me a kid from the 60s 70s that didn't demand to be taken there. I remember kittens rabbits and hamsters etc and the like in compartments in the windows covered in sawdust. There was also a Gerarld Sindstadt seedy cinema across the corridor, I think I might have gone in once to see one of the Star Wars films or possibly Superman or something, certainly not one of the Cert 18 or X rated films as they were known as then, too young. It became Addisons Nightclub but with a different entrance.

Where Rumours and before that Jenks was back in the 60's it was a restaurant called Movenpick

Seedy my Arris! The Tivoli was where my M&D took me, aged five, to see my first ever film: Mary Poppins.

As a young kid got my first cat from the pet shop. Had about eight or nine kittens in the one cage. All of them were Ginger apart from a black one which I chose. Called her Chippy.

From what I remember, it was the teenage son of the owner of the pet shop who started the fire.
He’d had a domestic with his mum(?) and did it out of spite.

Yeah, that was probably the Matinee slot. I saw a picture on Facebook recently of the old building and there was an advert for that weeks main feature... Double Agent 73, featuring Chesty Morgan a female secret agent with 73inch tits 😍

It was the early evening showing but yes, times changed. As a teen I saw some odd things in there:Freeby & the Bean comes to mind.

I remember I had my first pizza in Carriages & on another occasion with a mixed group one of which was a bit loud, a useless waiter overheard him calling him a dickhead & must have complained to the manager, he came over ages after the comment & all I can remember is him saying with a strong Italian accent was " what eeeis theeis abouta the deekheds. We nearly spat our food out laughing & it went down in folk law. Pure Faulty Towers.

Yes, Gerald Sindstadt, wretched man that used to play with himself on the back row😯

The Yates triangle was the place to be when I was young. The Bosley Grill was always a place to take your date if you wanted to make an impression. Silver service, great steaks and exotic wines from faraway places like France. On the other hand, Yates was where you went with the lads. Aussi white and chasers before crossing the road to Jenks. The Tivoli was a great little cinema and the pet shop was a fantastic pet shop with animals in every window. The parrot was brilliant and we taught it to speak a range of swearwords. Later, there was a snooker hall in the Tivoli basement. Good days.

Champagne on tap..sawdust on floor..2 doors either side were stray dogs would walk throiough, and lots of older folk drinking hot toddies...magic place.

I didn't know it was the pet shops teenage son! Are you sure about that?

I'd heard it was some other well known (to the police), drugged-up scrote.

Absolutely tragic what happened that night.
