The Pitch - possible problems and Solution

I asked one of my employees who used to be head groundsman at Spurs and at Stevenage about what happened last night and showed him the pictures.

He said what I said, that the pitch hasn't been looked after properly in the past (We all know that's an understatement) and that it is badly compacted.

Now, the club may already have a Verti Drain machine which is used once a month. If the club has this piece of machinery then they must be using it and the problem is deeper. To guarantee that you can get rid of the compaction the club would need to hire a very expensive specialist machine called and earthquake that is a soil disruptor, has huge blades and will break up the compaction and needs to be done at the end of the season obviously and the depth of the drains need to be taken into account. The Verti drain should be being used now.

They should also put silica into the soil, which is basically sand but the grains are round so it does not compact and will aid with the drainage.

If you are reading this Simon or Mr SLO then we are happy to consult on the pitch if you need it?

I've certainly heard of the term "verti drains" so I can only assume it was in the context of BFC.
Edit.
In fact even Karl had heard about it.

Jus ask SS to get Paul Burgess to come and sort it in the summer before he takes his post with Monaco. Pool fan and all that.

Paul was a student at Myerscough and served his apprenticeship at Blackpool.

The machine you refer to is an IMANTS Shockwave. Extremely vicious and wouldnt be used mid season unless absolutely necessary , the disruption caused to the surface would be visible and effect playability. I would imagine generally used by clubs with a lower budget.

Vertidrainers will be used mid season but you would also do this when you have a larger time frame between games , thus giving the pitch time settle back down. Im pretty sure our groundstaff will regularly verti drain.

I am sure SS has provided our groundstaff with all the machinery they require..... We have already seen the lighting rigs in action.

Shame that PF has now deleted twitter , would have been good to get a detailed explanation, it would probably have gone some way to giving our fanbase a better understanding.

The shockwave, Earthquake would have to be done at the end of the season as I said it couldn't be done during the season we wouldn't be able to play on the pitch at all then.

I would hope they have got a Verti drain and again, as I said it would only be used once a month but it is unlikely there will be a break long enough to do this because of the amount of home games to play.

The KO bit in the Gazette sounded like they had got the machine in for a loan but you would hope they had one now as it is an essential bit of machinery, which means that the problem is more serious so not likely to be rectified until the close season.
