The problem with Maxwell

Is that he very rarely moves away from his goal line. Just have a look at the goals we have conceded so far this season.
Most keepers will be about a yard out which narrows the target... but not him. Also
the Crewe goal was a very high floater of a cross which he should have had plenty of time to collect.
For me...he is the biggest disappointment of the season so far. And does not install any confidence in what is already a very shaky defence. We need a more experienced back up keeper to give him competition for his place.

Go suck a duck you plumb

I would've preferred Alwick. Maxwell very rarely comes off his line for crosses. Dont think his shot stopping has been too good this season either. Still, we are a work in progress so....

I have always liked Maxwell but someone pointed out to me that we concede lots of goals with barely any shots on targets. Teams seem to score against us with their first shot on target and they'll have very few shots on target all game, yet we conceded constantly.

The person who said this to me is a bit of a pessimist Blackpool fan so I didn't take it on board at first but I've started to notice it myself, at what point do you call the keeper into question with those stats? Hopefully he picks up

Very few keepers command their 6 yard area these days. Most are reflex keepers and stay on their line, leaving most crosses to their centre backs. This seems to be by design these days.

TTPower...i agree with what your saying...as I dont think Turton is good enough for this division ...but it shouldnt make the keeper exempt from coming for that cross....it would have been bread and butter to a confident keeper.

All games include mistakes. We're bound to concede some goals. Of greater concern to me is that we're not forcing errors at the other end or creating our share of clear cut chances.

I watched a game on Sunday on scots Prem highlights, can't remember which one. The keeper was a great stopper but awful kicker. That put them under loads of pressure.

Maxwell has one element in his favour above most of our previous keepers - he's really, really comfortable with his feet and whilst we play this way (whether it's right or wrong, it's the way we play) we need that otherwise passing about in our own half gets very ugly.

As someone said, it's L1.

The only thing I'd say is he's a little slow to go down. I can't remember the keepers name, but he was a tall lad in the 90's who couldn't get down to shots in the corner. Teams cottoned on.

Steve McIlhargey?

Lee Jones is the one I remember. Even Gilkes didn't have great agility and struggled to get down to shots low on his left.
Pretty certain it was him.

Interesting you say that about Gilks. When people were slagging the King off I was citing RK making saves left hand near post that MG would let in.

Apart from the penalty save against Wigan in 2014 that effectively kept us up that season. 🥳. Matt Gilks is a bit of a hero of mine.

He's agile and distributes well with both hands and feet but he's not the tallest of keepers. In fact he is small when you look about the professional game.

Ok for L1 IMO but should be planning for better going forward.

The Crewe goal really wasnt his fault...you can point the finger at any of the back four as all had a part in it but it really was a case of Marv missing a tackle, Turton losing his man and having nowhere near enough pace to catch him up and stop the cross and Husband being out of position and Mitchell getting there just too late.
All at sea! Springs to mind.

Gilks was a poor shot stopper. See Wigan at home in the Prem. Kingson was a far better shot stopper (see Sunderland away) but couldn’t catch a ball to save his life (see Blackburn away.

I don’t think Maxwell has actually made a save in the last three games. Every shot on target the opposition have had has gone in. Not a criticism, just an observation

Fair comments.

Was actually just thinking back to how bad Kingson's dead ball kicking was. Couldn't even get near the semi circle yet alone over the halfway line. He ended up getting Evatt to take gal kicks for him if I recall.

Gilks was rushed back from a long term injury for the Wigan game, and was not fully fit. Kingson was utter dogshit, and the entire team had lost faith him.

Maxwell, Aldwick and Howard are all better keepers than Kingson.
