The random defeat that always sticks with you?

So, for whatever reason, is there a Blackpool defeat that still irks? Maybe a long distance drive, an unjust loss etc - February 2001 when we lost 2-1 to Chesterfield despite being the best side, totally out singing them and being on the receiving end of two sucker punch goals - genuinely still annoys me!!

4-0 defeat away at York......wasnt it always

Went on the Tango coach, as such we had tickets to sit in the York family enclosure in the main stand.......

I somehow managed to blag my old man to stand behind the goal with the other pool fans (sitting in the family stand was for little kids, not 11 year olds)

We got onto the terrace about quarter to 3, from about 10 to it hammered down for the full 90 minutes........safe to say my old man was not amused.

To compound things there was an away seating area under cover but the stewards refused to open it because it was £2 cheaper to stand up........after about 70 minutes they were ordered to by the local plod and the last 20 minutes were spent under cover........it didnt however make the 3 hour journey home, p*ssed wet through any easier.

1-0 away defeat to Portsmouth 2011-12 I think. They played absolutely no football (fairly typical of a Steve Cotterill team) , just tried to stay in the game. We played them off the park, but we didnt work their keeper enough. They came into the game for the first time as 90 minutes approached. 4 minutes of added time, they scored after 3 minutes 45. Gutting.

I was in a bar in Pollenca in Majorca for that game sat next to 2 Pompey fans when that goal game up on Sky so I remember that result as well.

They bought me and my wife a pint of Estrella each afterwards tho so not all bad.

Burnley away in the late 90s.....Mickey Mellon scored a good goal near the end and came back to goad the Pool supporters who had been giving him stick all game

Bradford home in Play Offs.
Coventry in FA Cup in 1969. Cruising to a 1-0 win with minutes to go. Capitulated and lost 3-1
Sunderland away in 1974. Say no more.

Gillingham at home before Bloomfield Road was developed. 3-0 up but conceded 3 in the last 10mins or so, the last of which was pretty much the last kick. To see their 20 fans going mental on the Kop did my head in at the time.

This game was the first I thought of also.

It was one of my earliest away day memories and I remember asking my dad if we could go home. He turned around and said you always stay to the end and so that was that.

I was in the Chesterfield directors box for that match as a guest of a company I deal with, my host was thoroughly ashamed of the theft of 3 points!

I had to catch a specific train to get home from that game and left on 93 mins 30 saying, there's no chance of either side scoring....

Walsall away when we needed a win to go up, I remember Colin Methven was outstanding for them at the back. The other thing that sticks in my mind was we invaded the pitch at the end of the match and poured towards their end and instead of kicking off actually shook hands with all their fans. odd, very odd.🤔

Bradford City at home in the Semi Final Play Off. 2-0 up from the first leg, printed directions to Wembley in the programme for the 2nd leg - and then Carl Shutt scored a hat-trick. I still carry a copy of the League table at Easter in my wallet. We were top, they were 10th. Aaargh!!!

West Ham at hone in the Prem. they were there for the taking, we played like PNE and the goal was just embarrassing.

Yeah we did everything but score, should've been 3 up in the first 20 minutes, the guy who scored Eric something was Norweigan........all I could hear in my head all the way home was the chant "Eric the viking" 🤬

Yep, an awful game. I thought The West Ham/Marlon Harewood love in was a bit cringe-worthy; and whilst I'm at it, wasn't this the game where Scott Parker spent 90% of the game on the floor looking for free kicks (and getting them of course?)

Honourable mentions also for Wigan & Blackburn in the PL.

But for some reason (which I can't explain), I will personally go for the 2-1 midweek home defeat to Fulham in April 1978 during the awful run which sent us down. Their fans on the kop must have got back in their Fiat 500 and laughed all the way home - Bugger!

Torquay away. 2 1 up in the 90th minute, comfortable. Someone decides to streak from the away end and we manage to concede 2 in the added time for that incident. A long way home stewing on that one.

Was selling programmes at that game, Walsh scored from a pen early on and I thought we are back but of course we managed to concede two somehow. I remember the pen because I was standing by the goal on the track round the groundtrying to sell programmes, so it must have been early on in the game. The gate was only 4000, the lowest home gate for sometime, I hardly sold anything and made about 25p from what I can remember.

I remember in the late 80s we lost 1-0 at home to Chester in one of the most one sided games I’ve ever seen. We battered them from start to finish and could easily have scored 6 or 7. Needless to say Stuart Rimmer scored his obligatory goal against us on the break in the last few minutes.

There are quite a few to choose from but it would be from the Eighties which was the worst decade for me
in terms of crowds, performances, and results.
Losing at home to Altrincham in the FA cup in two consecutive seasons.
I was thinking after the first defeat it could not happen again. 😧😧

For me it would have to be the second leg of the LDV /Sherpa vans against Bolton
Absolutely thought at the time that it would be the closest to watching the mighty at Wembley as we would get
Watched the game with one eye on the sky looking for Russell coughlin's penalty to finally land
Absolutely devastated we didn't get through
Luckily I was out of the country for the infamous Bradford game

A 2-1 defeat at Sunderland in either 1973 or 74. A win would have taken us back to the old Div 1. Micky Burns gave us the lead after an hour, but some rich Geordie invective directed by Bob Stokoe at his Sunderland charges saw them up their game to turn it around. Devastating !

Chester away!

I can't remember the year or the score, but we lost.
The reason I remember it but was on the M56 not far past Warrington losing radio East Lancs fast.
They gave the team out and amongst other shit, players who had been performing badly, Mike Walsh was in the team.
So I promptly turned around at the next junction and headed home and avoided the extra misery and rage I felt at that time........ 🥴 🥴 🥴 🥴

For me it was a wretched 4-1 defeat at Rotherham on 1 Jan 86...we were four down by halftime and it could’ve been more....even the Tangerine sheikhs were depressed.

What a dreadful place Millmoor was.

Losing at Walsall when we needed a win to go up. No idea what year or what the score was.

May 1991...lost 2 0 ....and never looked like we were going to win...and then Wembley and Torquay followed.😤😤...the game that finished not far short of 11 pm with the drive back home to look forward to( not).At least the following year we had something to celebrate but it was a long wait.
As for Bradford....that was just awful☹️

Especially as Carlisle went up and we beat them 4-0 the week before.

Definitely not the worst but one that’s not been mentioned- Accrington at home on Boxing Day last season was a bad one. I’s been away since september and that was my first game back which id got very excited for. Awful game, awful weather, and a last minute winner for Accy. Beginning of the end for Grayson imo

Accy away in League 2. Cruising to a 1-0 win then probably one of the worst decisions I have ever witnessed when they were awarded a penalty. To make matters worse they scored again with last kick of game.
Shrewsbury last season when we were denied a stonewall penalty and a minute later they were awarded a very soft penalty. Before game we thought 6 easy points coming our way with Accy and Shrews at home.

A 3-2 midweek defeat at Brentford in (I think) 1978/79. We were two up at half time. Scarred me for life. Not a good coach journey home either , Ossie was incandescent.

West Ham at home in the Prem.

Awful performance, despite them having their keeper sent off and putting someone outfield in goal, we didn't test him. Awful
I think that was the following season in the championship? Lost 4-1 after losing 4-0 away.

Remember getting on the tube for the play off final and some West Ham fans were singing ‘when we play Blackpool we always score 4’ and thinking I’d love them to be shut up this afternoon.

The Man Utd home one is the one that hurt. Couldn't sleep that night after it. There's been plenty more but not one I've lost a whole nights sleep over.
I have found it difficult to get to sleep sometimes after a really big night match though. Just too pumped up still afterwards.

Derby County 1985/86 (h), 0-1. We battered them and battered them and battered them some more, could we get that equaliser?, could we f__k!. Have a guess who got Derby's winner?.

Who had bated us throughout the match!

Boxing Day '88 Away at Preston. Winning 0-1 with 10 mins left and they scored 2 to beat us. I can still remember the car journey home. I couldn't speak!

Also a 95th minute equaliser for Man City in the FA cup in the late 80s. I've moved on now but dont get me started on how the ref didn't give a foul! That's thd closest I ever came to crying at a match. Heartbroken! Love hurts sometimes.

Still not recovered from that Bradford match, also Walsall away last match and the year after Lincoln away, invaded the pitch at Lincoln thinking we were promoted only to find we were in the play offs again😔
