The Summer Transfer Thread - Part 2.

Evans wasn't great second half of the season. He was poor in defence and our mf got played through like it wasn't there way too many times to count. He looked better when he had someone behind him and he could be the creative player in the middle. I think it will be between Evans and Morgan who plays.
Evans spends to much time bollocking other players to then 5 minutes later giving the ball away on the edge of our box. Decent on the ball but doesn’t have the legs in a 2.

Evans and Morgan need to start definitely, include this guy and who do we drop if we play 4 4 2 as Brucey supposedly always plays. Bloxham Apter and Ennis should all start so where does he fit in?
He may vary the starting lineup or the formation (442 or 433) depending on the opposition. We were a little too predictable last season

Don’t agree Evan’s is a quality player with a presence about him, wouldn’t be at all happy if he doesn’t start
He was outstanding first half of the season, but faded badly in my opinion. May have been down to the fact it was his first injury free season for years and played a lot more games.
The Evans from the start of last season is a real asset however.

Wellens knows what he's doing, if he's letting Brown go it's presumably in order to bring in El Mizouni who he must rate more highly. Possibly similar fees.

Is this from a credible source? Or is it someone who's put the rumour out there and it's gathering legs because he wasn't in the squad today?

Most managers seem to say formation isn't all that important and the shape changes during a game. Bruce has seemed pretty insistent though that 442 is how we have been aiming to play so far.

I haven't got a problem with that, it's League One, keeping it simple with the right players might be exactly the right way to go about promotion.

The wide players did not offer much steel
C. J. may be OK late on running at a tired defence, but if on from the start is ineffective, the same applies to a lesser extent with Apter.
So the 4 often became a 2
That’s nonsense. Steve Bruce wants his wingers Beating there full back getting on the byline and providing for the strikers & tracking back and helping our full back.thats a lot more graft than Central midfield. Often last season, evans and Morgan got caught out positionally. Either both going forward and leaving gaps or both just not communicating and picking up there man. A proper cdm that can read the game but also can play a forward pass,Win the ball back and give it our danger men is what we’ve been crying out for for some time.

He played practically every game for a team who finished in the top six. It's an unglamorous but critical position that we were found lacking in numerous times last season.
I suspect Brown will fight it out with Evans for that role. I'm ok with that. It strengthens us no doubt.
With Honeyman meant to cover a lot of ground too, we'll have a much better press in midfield which is welcome.

It’s options. Morgan and Evans were fine against teams we could dominate, but in reality it probably needs to be one of them with someone more defensive for a better balance.

I also wonder whether Honeyman could play that Carey role of LM who drifts centrally and allows the overlap. I don’t see Bruce moving to a midfield 3 as we’ve got Fletcher and Ennis who both are pretty reliant on player in a front 2.

I was hoping we would bring a midfielder in who can bag goals, sort of fill in for second half of the season Carey…

Maybe he wants Albie to take that roll ? - we will be relying on him heavily if that’s the case… then sure up the midfield with this geezer ?

For me we’re still lacking flair and pace… hope there’s a couple danger men coming through the door soon.

That is your POV however mine is still relevant (not nonsense).
It does not matter how good your 2 are, if the opposition pack midfield and your wingers do not help you will be overrun in the middle of the park.

Most Orient fans speak very highly of him, and when you consider about 50% of message board posters couldn't spot a quality defensive midfielder in a lineup, should be a decent player. 😉

Whilst it's great hearing the type of player we're going for now will have people on here edge of their seats, exciting and ambitious, until they're in and we know for sure... with Blackpool we know not to get too overexcited before there's anything official.

But saying that...

I wonder if it'll be Bruceys connections with some real high quality loans, as well as maybe the odd permanent, that we couldn't imagine coming before.

Let's remember, this is possibly Bruceys last stint with a club. He wants to succeed and get promoted, probably more than that, and he knows there's a chance, I wonder if that's a selling point, come be part of this last journey with this legend of the game, it's going to be something special and he wouldn't be here if he was just going to fizzle out, he wants success. Might it tempt some on loan who wouldn't otherwise drop down. Maybe it already had with a couple of the signings in a way. Saying that, money is always key.
Good point.

Reading the Orient board, I think their success last season has gone to their heads. A few ‘why would he go to Blackpool’ comments and a ‘sideways move’ comment. I’m pretty realistic with how I see us size wise but we are definitely a bigger club than them and a move to us is undoubtedly a move up.

We’ve lacked legs and steel in midfield for a couple of years so anyone who brings those qualities would be very welcome.

Evans has quality but he was garbage in the second half of last season, hopefully he can find his form because he’s great when he’s on it. Looked tired and sluggish at the end of last season so maybe rotation would do him some good.

Yeah I noticed that. We are a bigger club than Leyton Orient in pretty much every way. Sour grapes I think.

Evans is a lazy bastad

We need 4 central midfielders in the match squad if we are playing 4-4-2.

It was really noticeable from Jan onwards how fast we tired in the second half and the level dropped off. That's to be expected where two are up against three and therefore we need two on the bench to keep the level high. Unfortunately we were bringing on Onomah and leaving one knackered player in there with him, apart from when Carey was fit and he dropped into CM

4-4-2 may be overrun however it does give us massive overload down the wide areas where so many of our goals came from. Often teams with 4-3-3 got overrun by our wide players with crosses raining in (chances we didn't take often enough).

So I can see how an option of 4-3-3 might appeal, however if we want to create more chances via wide positions we need 4 x cm players in the 18 where the quality doesn't drop off.

Been thinking this a lot recently about quite a few teams in our division. The likes of Orient and Stockport. How does a couple of good seasons automatically make you some massive club in this day and age 😂 the delusion is unreal. As a whole, Blackpool are massive. Everyone knows us, our colours, our history, our landmarks. Yes, not always the nicest of opinions or feedback but there’s always someone talking about Blackpool. Neutrals always back us, other supporters have always had a ‘soft spot’ for us. People associate fond memories with the town.

These lot with their head in the clouds seem to think because we’ve had a stagnant few years and not much success, it makes us a small club!! and players could not possibly want to make a move from Leyton bloody Orient 😂

Stinks of jealousy 🍊

The notion that Evans is lazy is ridiculous.
He's the very opposite of lazy.
Works hard and gets stuck in.
Can't believe some people can't see this.
His level dropped slightly later on, after his absence, but he was always one of our best players even then.
He's clearly a very good player but the midfield was definitely short last season in terms of numbers and different types of players. I'm sure this year will be better.

Spot on! and Evans ball winning stats prove this:

248 recoveries = top 1% of all L1 midfielders.
38 interceptions = top 8% of all L1 midfielders.
220 duels won = top 4% of all L1 midfielders.

Anyone saying Evans is lazy needs to take off their negative bias goggles, they made you blind to all the good work he did.

Both Evans and Morgan have their strengths and weaknesses and I'm glad we have them both but there were a number of occasions I can remember last season when a half decent opposition just running through us in the middle. That needs fixing and if we sign a DM that gives more spine in the middle when needed and more opportunity to rest Evans and/or Morgan. Feels like this could be a good fix to me.

The only thing Evans was missing last season IMO was a full pre-season, he came in late and got fit playing games etc. He did look tired towards end of the season. This season will be different I think Bruce will rest him when he thinks its needed. It looks as though we will have players who we can rotate when required anyway.
