The Thorniley Problem

Yeh Thorniley has been a massive problem playing great in all but a handful of games.
I'm sure Critch loves problems like that rather than knowing you'll have a winger, forward or midfielder out for the majority of the season

There is no doubt he has been one of this season's heroes but if Ekpiteta is 100% fit, do you play him?
Critch prefers a left and right footed mixture at centre-back so expect Thorniley is sealed in for the POs unless the Viking makes an unexpected return on Saturday.

I wouldn't be surprised if Big Marv starts on Saturday (or at least comes on at half time, depending upon score) to give him some game time.

Would be great with us now playing with 3 at the back to have Marv,Ballard and The Viking as a three together for the play offs.
However Thorniley and Husband have covered brilliantly all season so perhaps will get to play.

Any Club need two right sided and two left sided CH’s. Retaining Thorniley solves the left side. If/ when Ballard goes back, Pool will need a right sided replacement, unless of course he comes back next term.

For me it's Ballard or Marv on one side and Viking or Thorniley on the other.

But we may go three for these next few games. And Husband has had a brilliant season too. Husband and Turton are two of my favourite players, cos they have such brilliant attitudes. They just keep turning up and playing wherever asked and give 100% and never let their heads drop.

It's hard to leave people out.

Yes...the option of left sided CH's is either Thorniley or Gretarsson.
Thorniley has been the unsung hero covering that position seamlessly throughout Vikings injury.
I'd keep them both.

Squad game and IF we make it to Wembley it's an energy sapping pitch. Just as I sit here watching full on hailstorm it could be 90 degrees again by 30th May IF we make it. We could yet need all of those defenders who are fit.

As I’ve said on another thread , Ballard, Big Marv and Thorniley is our strongest back three at the moment, and should be given chance to prove it.

Thorniley has played his way into this winning team. For the semifinals & final should we progress, it’s up to the manager if any tactics, further injuries, rotation or curveballs are deemed necessary for changes to personnel. I’d be happy to start with the Ballard/Thorniley partnership. Changes against Bristol by all means, to give big Marv, Stewart, Anderson & anyone else who may play a part some much needed game time.

I like the left right balance so would continue with Thorniley. Marv is a right footer so covering for Ballard really

I like big Marv and would have no problem with him in the team but Thorniley all the way for me,I’ve seen nothing whatsoever in Thorniley’s performances since he’s been in the team that would suggest Marv should be playing in his place, infact I’d say Thorniley is a better all round defender out the two.he’s been brilliant.

Why did Critchley try to get rid of Thorniley earlier in the season?
First impressions seemed to count with him. Feels like more of a truce since the covid and injury outbreak in January caused a rethink and the window closed without anyone making an offer to take over his contract.

When all our CH's were fully fit it seemed unlikely that he would be getting much game time and in the handful of games prior to the injuries he'd looked less than convincing.
I'd be the first to admit I had concerns when he first started covering but absolutely no qualms about him now.

I said last night Thorniley is our unsung hero.
I don't know who's been his inspiration but all credit to him for being a rock in the league's meanest defence.

Whoever plays in central defence, I have no problem with. My concern is in the fullback positions where our defenders don't keep a tight enough reign on the opposition wingers. That , to me , is where we will succeed or fail in the playoffs.
