This Nations League Nonsense?

Crap idea from the start but wouldn't you have thought that someone would have kicked it in to touch in the middle of a pandemic with an already over-crowded football calendar - surely there is no financial benefit to it for anyone?

not a crap idea at all. Much better to have competitive games for the national team than meaningless friendlies.
I think the point is, it's in the middle of a pandemic. Looks like we're forfeiting the game with Iceland anyway, due to Covid restrictions.

The Nations League is a good idea in principle. Competitive games against teams around your standard. But it should have been the competition to ditch this autumn for the sake of player welfare.

But when EUFA see that many countries are arranging properly meaningless additional friendlies on top of the 2 Nations League games in this international window, ie England v Ireland and probably 20 other games today or tomorrow, they probably think they have done nothing wrong....

It is still a load of crap and nobody seriously considers it a competition. I agree with the OP, now is not the time to be making this year's fixture list any more crowded.

In normal times it’s a great idea and much better than friendlies. Also gives the lower ranked teams the chance to play against similar teams and actually win games rather than getting hammered each time they go out on the pitch.

At the moment however international sports it’s a really bad idea. Gathering people from different parts of one country to travel overseas to play against people gathered from different parts of another country really doesn’t make any sense.

No, the point is these games were already scheduled to be played so there is no overcrowding of fixtures. If International fixtures were gonna be cancelled because of concerns over the pandemic then it can't be right to be selective over what's cancelled and what's not. It's either all or nothing.

What actually should be done and has often been talked about is to reduce the size of the premier league to 18 teams as in the Bundesliga or even scrap the League Cup.
Or send half the Premier League into their own Euro set up. Like Greg Clarke tried.

Must also respectively disagree with the O/P. There have always been international breaks, and too often full of utterly meaningless friendlies, most of the time serving no purpose whatsoever. This tournament has provided a lot of competitive games, and benefits many countries whilst also giving additional ways to reach the Euros. One of the better things that UEFA have done.

They should eventually evolve (post-pandemic) a 14 team European Super League, starting with the 8 Champions League quarter finalists one year, then adding the 4 CL semi finalists the following year with two relegated to make 10, and so on until it's two relegated and the CL finalists promoted every year. The top domestic division in each country should be no more than 14 teams, with the ESL teams being in both their domestic leagues and the ESL at the same time. The top non-ESL teams get to play in the CL or it's replacement every year to try to reach the final and so gain promotion to the ESL. The ESL teams don't play in the replacement CL. That way, we get a European Super League with promotion and relegation and no club has to quit its domestic league.

I like it the games are of a good quality they tend to put out strong teams and players tend not to withdraw from squads.
The games where planned ages ago and one organisation isn't going to back down over another for them to be cancelled you could say the same about last nights EFL trophy game why is such a busy period MONEY they've been paid by the sponsors up front.
