This playing out from the back

Keeper tapping it out to a player in this area inviting pressure. I don’t get it. You’re just inviting the press pissing about with it near your own box.

Is it just me that wants to see the keeper launch it to the big man?

I think inviting the other team to press is half the point; it drags the opposition out of position and makes space for us to attack.

Its a fad thats been going on all season that will eventually be ditched sometime.

If only Arsenal or Chelsea were to snap up Gnando and put Larry in charge 😆

Seriously though I know what you mean @Athers - Man United are guilty of it on a regular basis and I don't think De Gea needs any more pressure at the moment!

If you are good enough to do it then it can be very effective. It opens up the space between the strikers and midfielders and midfelders and defenders creating room between the lines for us to play in. Whether League One players can play that way though is a different question completely. You need a confident keeper and defenders that are good on the ball for it to work.

Quite - that particular tactic relies heavily on having very adept players who aren’t going to lose the ball too close to their own goal.

Whereas hoofing it a long way from your goal means there’s a good chance you’re giving away possession straight away.

If this is to be a tactic employed by us, it is going to need time to perfect, it isn't something that happens over night but when it clicks is very effective.

I hope this is something a certain part of our fan base are capable of acknowledging.....

Is this not the Grayson tactics you hated ? Thought you wanted to see good football

I do not see a problem with playing out from the back. Defenders should be comfortable with the ball and as has been mentioned kicking it long means a fair chance of losing possession.

I will never, ever grasp why teams do that short pass from a goal kick thing. Maybe if you're city and it invites the other team to press you but it's a modish fad when league one teams do it as the notion of one touch tikitaka down the pitch falls down when it's being performed by Rob Edwards.

Yep agree with all of that. PL players are that for a reason. It's because they are better players than L1 and that means all aspects of their game. There's a time and a place to play out from the back and in my view that should be when there's plenty of players available to receive the ball from the keeper which is more often the case when a long ball from the opposition has gone thru to our keeper and they don't have many players too far forward. The risk is far greater in L1.
Agree we have to mix it up. Playing that way all the time and the opposition willsuss us out pretty quickly and be ready to pounce.

I'd like to think NC has enough in his coaching locker to know when we'll need to play it out from the back and when we need to be more direct.
It isn't a coincidence that Burnley are able to have more relative success (excuse the pun) against some of the bigger teams because of the way they're able to counter the pass out from the back.

This has been the basis for some of the worst Blackpool teams I’ve ever had the misfortune of watching.

It’s been widely covered on this thread but just my two’penth worth is, trying to play out from the back should be our style, when it isn’t an option I’m sure NC has worked out a plan B and C

I'm sure there will be more than a Plan A in the locker, be it hoof-ball or playing out from the back. Both are an art when done well. A long ball from the keeper needs players in forward midfield who can shield the ball, get quick tackles in if it's lost and move the ball quickly to players who can make space for themselves or others.
A short ball out from the keeper does not mean it has to be played out - evatt used to ping long-diagonals; still a useful tactic if we have players capable of moving onto such a pass.

You have a 50% chance of losing possession, always give it to your own player.

It's the two yard goal kick to the defender right by the six yard box that annoys me, especially when they look up, see they're bring closed down and give it back to the keeper to knock it down field. Why didn't they do that from the off?

Maybe that's why Edwards is on his way.

I’m 25 and when I was a kid I didn’t understand why the Pool always passed the ball straight to the opposition CB

Playing out from the back should ONLY be performed by mobile, quick thinking players who are comfortable on the ball. If you want a passing team then that's how they play. I can't remember any of our defenders who were comfortable with it, and even when they tried it the hoof ball finally arrived when panic set in, usually ending up in row z or 6 ft above Gnandos head. I hope and trust that Critch will accumulate enough defenders of the right calibre so they can set the pattern from the back, and coach our better existing players in that style. It's better to watch and is what football should be about. (but not if someone like Tilty stands on the ball and gifts the opposition a goal)

Maybe that's why Edwards is on his way.

I don't really want to see it from any league 1 centre half. If they're both good enough at football to do it and also good enough at defending to defend against the power and directness of a lot of lower league attacks then they won't be a league 1 player for long.

Hopefully because they've total footballed their way to the Championship with us of course!
