Thommo on the Seasiders

"There is an absolutely massive rivalry between Preston and Blackpool," he said. "I had some great memories there and hopefully I can replicate that at Preston.
"They have done well and if they can get up through the play-offs, as much as there is that massive rivalry, everyone looks forward to derbies.
"If they go up, there will be more local derbies to look forward to next year."

If you read between the lines there, he said he has great memories at Blackpool but despite several years at PNE, has none there to date.

And he’s right, I remind my Preston mates regularly of the list of memories I have as a Blackpool fan since the 80’s, 2 cup wins, numerous Wembley/Cardiff victories, premier league, double over liverpool, etc. etc.

Then I ask them to list theirs. They mumble something about Beckford or tell me they could have signed Charlie Adam but decided not to, as if thats a positive for them?! It’s always fun 👍

Good bloke Thommo.

Would you apply a for a job there? 🤣

I wouldn't be able to get up in the morning. I worked in Preston for 3 years at the end of the 90s, that was hard enough.
I was based at the RPH for a few years and even though Fulwood is supposed to be a better area it was miserable as fuck.

Anyone slating Thommo is a knobhead. He's absolutely sound. He's a Blackpool resident and is simply providing for his family as is Barks.
Exactly right. Obviously from a young age he was always gonna have a career in football and he's done well out of it. And He's a professional and that's how he deals with questions like this etc.
So based on above, not sure he ever grew up as being an actual Blackpool fan and so you are never gonna get the criticism of the nobbers. And rightly so.

Reminded of a podcast I heard with the great Clarke Carlisle. Despite being born in Preston he hated them. His father was a talented amateur footballer and they never looked at him. They never looked at Clarke either despite being a promising local schoolboy. The nobber fanbase slagged him off calling him a donkeylasher. He pointed out that in 90 or so games for the Seasiders he had been man of the match just 4 times, all against PNE.

What did he say to the local rag when interviewed about signing for them? He told them it was his boyhood ambition to play for them. When it comes down to it a footballer's first loyalty is to get as much money as they can in what is a very short career.

They are all capable of having a wash and repenting. Look at the mighty Maxwell. A better player and a fans favourite despite his sojourn in the Slough of Despond when his career went temporarily awry.

Man utd fan, good lad. Never says anything controversial in public. Only talked to him a few weeks ago and it was all Bolton and Lester, not one word about Blackpool.

They had Moyes and Beckham.

Just for balance I speak to him fairly regularly and the conversation is always Blackpool (other than me asking about him, his missus and kids). He thinks Blackpool are in a great place and Critchley is doing a tremendous job.

I can't remember - did he leave us our was he binned? I seem to think it was when Grayson got the PNE job and he quit?

Why do I think you want to add..."Only talked to him a few weeks ago...at PNE's training ground while I was watching....and it was all about..."
From the past few weeks you must obviously know that nobody really believes your a Pool fan.....

seem to remember he was binned by the Os.......he was the last vestige of the PL year and they didn't want anyone around the club who had "inside" knowledge

Thats one of my favourite memories too! I was playing snooker with my PNE mates in a snooker hall in fulwood, when a massive scarey tattoo'd bloke kicked the door open and literally shouted "f'ing Ellis has signed for f'ing Blackpool". I was in equal parts delighted and terrified :)
