Thorniley again

Really torn when it comes to him. He’s been good and I can’t emphasise enough the job he’s done at a time of injury crisis. But is he here for the long-term?

I assume he wasn’t taken off injured? If he’s been hauled off at half time because he can’t contain a striker who has only scored 4 goals all season it doesn’t bode well does it? He’s been so hit and miss but I’m actually disappointed for him because as I said, he has been good for the most part and brilliant against Peterborough

I can see why Critch didn’t fancy him. I imagine he got roasted in training by Yates, CJ or Dimi as he struggled with pace again today and he would have struggled in training too against our boys.

The balance is as stated above - he’s done well for us when we needed a fifth or is it sixth choice CB and despite a couple of costly mistakes this week, performed well.
We needed him and he’s done fine overall

He’s played very well during his run of recent games but he is prone to getting caught on the wrong side of the forward. This was his problem early season but hopefully he will sort this out.

He's our fourth choice centre half, possibly even fifth behind Husband.
He has performed admirably and would be more than good enough for most teams in this division.
Unfortunately today he was roasted by the guy he was marking.

It's League One, it happens.
Fortunately we usually have better players in front of him.
Unfortunately at this moment in time he has been asked to step in.
Most teams would have been on their arse if they were having to play their 5th choice centre half alongside a right back in the middle at the back.

Let's have some perspective.

Think I showed plenty of perspective in my post. You repeated a lot of what I said.

He’s done well when called upon but with Grettarson back and hopefully Ballard available for Swindon I hope we don’t see him again this season. Sorry. He’s 4th choice for a reason
Maybe now, but it was mental to be playing full backs ahead of him at CB earlier in the year... Think he's been hard done by and not really let us down. He basically done for pace by Hardie - he is quick. I agree though, I'd rather see Viking, Marvin and Ballard.

He's done well, really well and is very decent on the ball but put up a player against him who has pace and he can and does struggle. And that's probably the biggest factor why he's only our fourth choice [at best] central defender.

Teams have sussed us out and know we can't defend well against the ball over the top as we lack pace....unfortunately Thorniley is the slowest of all our centre half options so consequently gets exposed more

I don’t blame individual players, as football is a team game, Thorniley is a very good defender . He may not be the quickest, but he certainly isn’t to blame for their goal.

Not necessarily saying he was directly at fault for the goal, more his overall performance today. If he was taken off due to an injury I apologise

I agree with the positive comments here, I think in really difficult circumstances, he's done a sterling job for us, without which, I think we'd be firmly in mid table. With Ballard and Greta fit, he'll probably be cover again, but I for one am happy he's at the club. I also think he's still relatively young and I think can improve further.

Think I said pre-match that Thorniley would struggle against Hardie's pace. The trouble is that it isn't just as simple as being skineed for the goal as what it does is make the defence drop deeper and creates a bigger gap between midfield and defence and then midfield and Jerry.

Bringing Gretarsson on meant the whole team pushed up further (especially Embleton and Mitchell) which helped change the flow of the game. The coaching staff had also spotted the opportunity for Mitchell to get behind their left back which he did with success.

As a 4th choice squad player, are there any better in league 1? I'd say probably not.

Has done a great job covering for us and it's wrong to jump on his back for rare mistakes, all the players make mistakes at times.

He's saved us more points than cost us that's for sure.
