Yes Howe can go but we need Thorniley as a squad player
Also time is right to replace Turts with Gabriel, Turts again has done enough to prove he is a good squad player and we should offer him a contract on that basis.

Lots on here keep suggesting we need another “ centre half” to come in.
Thorniley if he performs as well as he has when given the chance perhaps means we don’t.
Given all our injuries and COVID issues that was a good all round performance.
Thought Williams also made sure Wigan never really got going.

I’d probably say he was a back up, that’s not to say he hasn’t done well in the last two games, he has.

But he seemed to get destroyed by speed and movement tonight, it only happened a couple of times but it’s not a good sign, nor is it the first time it’s happened.

But that doesn’t warrant a complete isolation from any football, he would have been more than good enough to step up to the team on the occasions we put Turton and Husband in to centre back with largely disastrous results.

I can’t see why he’s being forced out, he’d be our third choice centre back after Marv and Gretarsson but as this seasons showed you need players capable of filling voids.

You also forget the right back (Notts) starting at left sided centre half as plan A whilst an at least adequate actual left sided centre half sat in the Gulag.

The above seems churlish but it's just weird. I've seen Thorniley play 5 times and 4 times he's been at least competent. Notts was a mistake waiting to happen every game and he gave Marvin the jitters. I've got to say though, well done to him for showing the character to grasp his chance and to Critch for maintaining a relationship that meant he could get a performance out of him. 'd be interested to see if he named him after the game as playing well as I thought he's bailed us out in a tight situation very well indeed all things considering.

I saw his first two games at Wycombe and Oxford, and he had shockers both times. Maybe someone at the club has seen that and fed it back.

Distribution-wise, he's the best centre-back at the club. Defensively, he's the worst.

You could say the same about Gabriel and Turton or Garbutt and Husband but you can get away with it more at full-back. We'll need Ballard back for the February fixtures.

He was a regular in the Massives first team in the Championship and the supporters were gutted when designed for us. I'm not sure why he was out of favour with us. The only thing he seems to lack is a bit of pace.

I agree with Kip regarding Thorniley. He has a really good left foot for free kicks and passing long range. He lacks a little in his recovery runs and is a little suspect when being run at. If i was manager id give him a role as holding mid to see if he looks composed in that position.
I dunno. He's slow in possession sometimes. Turts can't do it and he's much quicker.

Yes that’s a good point, he’s never stuck out to me in the same way Marv dominates a game, but equally I’ve never though wow he’s absolutely terrible. I actually did comment something along those lines when he played against Accy in the Mickey Mouse cup, he looked poor, but we were all over the place back then and he hadn't played in about a year. The last two games he’s really shown a lot of character, and that’s admirable.

I get the feeling he’s one of the quiet ones in the dressing room, that’s more likely to just take it, perhaps Critch needs an out let for his authority after the goal machine tells him to fuck off several times a day 😏. I jest, but I do wonder if there’s some truth in it.

Not gonna vote but I've seen two decent performances from him. I don't like the idea of Husband playing in the middle and I think we should always have four capable centre halves on the books and maybe he is the fourth. But a lot depends on what Critchley thinks and what he and Thorniley have discussed.

Given that he has only played two games for us this season , his sharpness wasn’t that bad, imagine if he has a few more games and gets his match sharpness, he would definitely be an asset !

Yeah I think he's shown he has something, maybe he would be cover, come in some games when rotating, play in cups etc, fight for the place.

Its a strange one as he came highly rated, but never got going, not sure why.

I agree totally but worth a go. He seems to be similar to Gary Brabyn and Andy Morrison to me (you never know unless you try!)
Yeah, maybe! I think that about Ballard a bit with Morrison. He's got a good eye for a short pass has Ballard ad a decent touch for a centre half and he's got that Morrison type build.

i think the problem lies like so many managers they take an instant dislike to a player and thats it they are left out in the cold he has had a couple of micky mouse cup games in a weakend side weve had players come here who couldnt get a game under their last manager at the club we got them from and they have been quality for us. i think his face doesnt fit with NC.

Well in the 2 matches he has played the commentators have both remarked that Critchley has said he can leave, so I am sure scouts will have heard that. I would like him to stay, but the club will probably be giving some thought to the fact that the squad size cap reduces if we are still in this division next season

You cant, Gabriel and Garbutt are competent full backs who offer a lot going forward.
Husband and Turton are average league 1 full backs, and that isn't an insult, but they are limited going forward and as prone to lapses in defence as the other 2, maybe more so.

I've only seen him a couple of times but seemed to be too small for a centre half and didn't look to have much pace. I didn't see last night's game but listened to the commentary and towards the end Chissy said we look very easy on the eye going forward but still shaky at the back.
Maybe after a run of games he may come good but unless he played alongside a dominant centre half we could be in trouble. Brighton had a free reign at set pieces on Saturday.

The lad came with good reviews from his previous club, now we know this makes little difference, good or bad, but I thought he'd do well with us. It can't be easy for the lad, brought in by an old school manager in Grayson then a few weeks later he's under a completely different style of coach. Whenever I've seen him he looks a little bit unsure of himself, maybe this enforced run of games can turn things around for him? Either at Blackpool or other clubs scouting for a defender a few decent performances might be just what he needs.

He did a very good job last night, but Wigan are a poor team. I think coach likes his centre backs big and 6ft plus.

He is not a bad player but lacks pace that is necessary. He got done a couple of times last night where the player went past him (that can happen to the past) but wasn't then quick enough to get back - our other 3 cbs are all quick enough to recover after being beaten or having made a mistake. You can coach many things but not a basic lack of pace.

He showed yesterday he was willing to fight for his place, or at least show some pride despite the news he ws told he could leave.

He does seem to get done by pace occasionally but given the lack of games you could only see improvement if he played more.

I seem to recall when he did play last season away and it was quite bad, but he had either not long arrived or wasn't fit.

I was impressed considering he was told to leave in his performance yesterday, whilst nor perfect there was a lot to like.

I hope its gives him and them all confidence and we see more of the same.

Whether he's changed the managers mind we dont know but he's done himself no harm.

Am happy for the lad that he's at least getting some recognition, must be a good feeling for him.

A lot of the best centre halves have been slow but made up for it in there overall game.
