Has anyone heard how’s he’s progressing up at Rangers?
I wonder if his parents think he might have been better off for his career staying local and being part of the Critch revolution?

This was covered a couple of weeks back. In short I don't think they were playing at Youth team level until about March.

Wayne Rooney made his international debut at 17. Has he just spent the whole of that year playing virtually no games? His choice I suppose but you worry it won't have helped his development.

How many Wayne Rooney's are there at 17 though?
And how many first team regulars are there at 17 at Blackpool?

Can't really blame the lad for not seeing the disruption and implications of a global pandemic coming when he signed for Rangers. It hasn't helped anyone. Their academy isn't run on the back of borrowed facilities, and they've a fully established structure in place to develop players internally and through the scottish league loan system. It's up to the players in the end but it's obviously not a dud set up as there's been plenty of notable graduates from it over the years.

Jadon Sancho went to Germany at 17.

And Jude Bellingham. That's down to Dortmund's transfer policy of being a big yellow Brentford. England are capping these lads early now in case they start to miss out if they qualify to play for another country in time and have a choice. One thing that Southgate made a point of after losing Wilf Zaha who he had through the U21s.

No but he made a first team appearance the season before so could have made many more since.

We will have to wait and see. Some said McGahey would play for England after 3 games!
That wasn't aimed at Tony Weston. Did change my reply quickly as I read it as you'd started to try to compare our set up to Wayne Rooney. With Weston, from what I saw, he'd been watched by other clubs, and the club couldn't offer him a contract due to his age.

The best that could be done was to get Grayson to put him in his squad in the FA Cup against Maidstone. Gave him a couple of minutes at the end when the game was won and got that on record to use as a bartering tool. In the hope that Rangers were reasonable about compensation. It sounded like they were from the wording on the announcement and it's done now. And the visible result since has been giving pro contracts out to a few lads as soon as they can.

So are we saying that because this seventeen year old has failed to break into a Rangers side that never lost a league game all season, that he should have stayed at Blackpool ?

I guess in the end it might turn out that it would have been better for him to stay at Blackpool but he - and anybody who advises him - didn't have the benefit of hindsight when he decided to move to Rangers and made the decision based on everything that was known at the time he had to make the decision.

Nathan Patterson will be a country mile in front of Weston at the moment - and 2 years older - and he has only managed to get appearances in the first team in cup games and in leagues games only because of Tavernier getting injury.

He may have made the move because he was excited at the prospect of working with the coaching staff at Rangers and the superior facilities and the move could still prove to be a good one even if he fails to make an impact at Rangers - although to be fair, he's 17 now and Pele had already played in a World Cup Final at that age so obviously time is running out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😛

The problem remains at Blackpool about having something in place for the next stage of development after the u/18s. We seem to be getting the staff in place, it's appears to be the ambition of the Board to develop players so hopefully we'll see something happening but I still think it's dependent on getting the new training ground up and running. He was already seen as a mega talent. Weston will benefit because of the better set up at Rangers, but as Simms as illustrated this season amply, there is no substitute for first team experience in a senior side. The lad has grown every game.

I dunno, I can think of at least...ooh, Pele.

I wish Tony Weston all the best

However I have to laugh at the superior training facilities argument. Of course Rangers have superior training facilities. Lots of clubs have. But that means very little. All the nice training facilities in the world mean nothing you are not getting games. They just give players a nice comfy feeling prior to being chucked on the scrap heap at 21.

I know he moved up there for little or nothing but if they were to sell him for a reasonable fee would we get anything from it?
