Too negative up front, again

Started v QPR when the game was there for the winning, and Jerry didn’t get on. Today we played the weakest team I’ve seen us play this season, and Jerry thrown on at 1-0 down, as predicted.

Come on Critch, get our goal scorers on the pitch, not the one dimensional Madine.

We’ve chucked away 3 points today by being overly negative.

Agree, Brum looked poor and we must of known they were players short,so we should of gone out all guns blazing to win an away game,we’ve now put the pressure on ourselves to win next Saturday in my eyes

I don't think we were negative, we controlled the game for the majority of it. Madine with the three attacking mids behind was working well. But we were very wasteful in front of and around the goal. Our crossing in general yesterday was woeful. I think you have to give Brum some credit for keeping us out, the tackle on keshi as he went through was worthy of Marvin. Subs were a bit random yesterday, and lavery and jerry might have been a 25 -30 minute combination, rather than the 5 to ten they got. That I think was a bit negative

Agree apart from your comment about Madine. When a teams sole focus is about getting long throws and set pieces slung into the box and they have players like Deeney, Jutkiewicz as well as their two centre halves going up then you have to combat that strength. And that is why Madine was selected.f

We lost so in the end the selection and format didn't work

Madine is not even playing like a striker at the moment and is miles off the pace...we had all that pace and trickery on the bench and didnt even change things up until after the hour mark (again). Madine should be brought on with 15 to go
a) if we are winning so he can waste time with his shithousery and for his defensive talents)
b) if we are losing or drawing as a plan B

He isnt close to being fit and is knackered after 30 mins. (although he did raise his game v Sheff U...must have been an Adrenalin rush). We need Lavery in the team and scoring goals with Yates as back up and eventually sign an upgrade on Madine)

That's the way I like to see Madine used, we have a back 4 and a defensive midfield 2 and 2 wide midfield players to deal with the opposition threat.
It would be nice to think we could have at least 2 players on the pitch that were all about the problems they can bring to the opposition.

Beat me to it. Madine does the up front protection and lay offs well.

I know why he’s selected, it is very obvious.

The point is, that we can’t go into games thinking only about how to stop the opposition. Most teams in the Championship have similar strengths. Draws are fine, mixed in with wins and of course some losses. Since the win at Sheffield United I feel we’ve become negative, intent on not losing. As a result we are having good possession, but not creating enough chances.

If we are going to play Madine, we have to partner him. Same goes for Jerry and Lavery, who generally struggle on their own.

We have a very talented group and as much as I like Madine, he’s not at the same level as others. I‘d like to see Critch focus on building strike partnerships, and I don’t believe he’s given enough time for that this season.

been saying all along that Madine needs a partner. At the moment our wide right player are not doing enough going forward so for me the right time to change the system and go more 4-3-3.

Critchley seems to be losing the plot a little with his negative, safety first style of play. We will struggle to put teams away playing an immobile striker and wingers who neither score or assist. Needs a rethink and a dip into the transfer market in January for some creativity and goals.

Without criticising Critch (just because we've lost a game), I'd like to him adopt a bit of Ollie's positivity going forward. I.E. "if you score one we'll score 2, and if you score 2, we'll score 3" etc. Critch's approach is one of keeping the backdoor closed & hope to pinch a goal and a 1-0 win and that's a risky strategy.
We've only scored 20 goals in 20 games, we aren't creating too many chances & our set piece deliveries must be improved (I think Fulham are top from set pieces with 13 goals).

Spot on.

It may be that Critch has looked at the points accumulated (possibly more than expected) and that with survival in mind, has decided to take a cautious approach, to get us to safety. Thing is, for every draw you lose 2 points, so even on an unbeaten run, you can slip away. It’s surely better to have a go in appropriate games, accepting that at times we may come away with nothing.

I agree Timperley and I feel yesterday was one of those games where we should of given it a go,not gung ho but with a real attacking intent and see where it took us .As it is we play within ourselves and still got nothing. When we came off the pitch and look in the mirror can we really say we did everything we could of to win that game ?

Madine has really won me over with his abilities up front and defensively. You can see he covers far more ground than he did last season and does seem to be enjoying himself - less theatrics and petulance. He’s become a very good team player, no doubt down to the Club, NC and the great set of lads he plays with.

But Madine is not a lone striker and tbh it’s asking too much of him. He shouldn’t be put in that position.

We can compete but are a few quality players short of a promotion side. There's little in the way of creativity and not enough goals in the squad.
Today's prediction followed by one from March 2021.

How did that turn out for you.

What absolute bollocks, after a slow start we controlled it and the tactics worked well, as players they should of done better in the final third, better delivery and cooler heads would of got us a win, we win that 1-0 NC is a master tactician. Its good to have a debate though!
