Two serious questions

Oldham Athletic have stated they’ll make their players redundant if they don’t take a 60% pay cut. Apparently if you’ve been with them for less than 2 years you don’t even have to offer any redundancy payments. Isn’t Simon Sadlers mate who’s on the board a legal bigwig? If so worth exploring if there’s any way we can use this loophole in the law to get Joe Nuttall off the books free of charge.

Also read an article stating overweight blokes in their 50s are the ones this virus seems to be targeting. This is primarily the AVFTT family which is a worry, youngsters can’t string a sentence together so forget them, and whilst it’s nice to have a few old boys if we start dropping like flies it’ll just be 20s arguing with himself all day long.

Surely players can’t be made redundant ? You can only make redundancies where the job in itself is redundant - can’t imagine a football club being able to justify the role of player being redundant. They wouldn’t be able to bring other players in afterwards otherwise.

Also I’m way off 50 albeit already overweight!

Footballers are predominantly on fixed term contracts with no early termination provisions so I don't see how what Oldham are proposing works on any level
Having heard who might now be involved there I am not surprised to read such nonsense though

TAM Serious question how come in pretty much every other job you can be made redundant or laid off if you’re just not up to scratch yet footballers can’t?

Would be fun to see a club go through the disciplinary process for under-performance by a player.

As I said footballers are generally on fixed term contracts so in simple terms the club agrees to employ them until a specified date come what may
You and I will always have worked on a week to week / month to month basis with a notice provision either side ie 1 week minimum or perhaps 3 months max which is then overlaid by unfair dismissal rights after 2 years
As an aside it works both ways as Clubs sell players as assets relying inter alia on the length of contract they could hold the player to
