Ugli Petal Disinvited

Johnson shoots himself in the foot again, and our Home Secretary's invitation to a meeting on Sunday in France has been withdrawn.

I don't blame the French. The real reason they don't want her there is they want a decent cup of cafe au lait and if she was around the table, she'd curdle the "lait"with just one of her scowls.

Still, it's not all bad news, as she'll now have more time to bully her staff, and lobby for more multi-million pound Government contracts for her mates

Another example of the child-man President pretending that everything bad is the fault of the English. The fate of the refugees in northern France is entirely and solely his responsibility and he has failed time and time again to deal with it. Boris has offered Macron a number of solutions including remote asylum applications and British police patrols, but every proposal apparently questions his manhood and is an insult to France's sovereignty.

France has no will to stop the suicidal Channel crossings and the loss of innocent lives otherwise they would have taken action already. Meanwhile, the gendarmerie hang around the beaches watching passively as one after another people-smugglers pass by with their inflatable death vessels and yet another group of innocent and desperate passengers.

It’s a difficult one.

No French politician ever lost votes by attacking the British and of course Macron has a major election next year. Equally Johnson has lost massive credibility within his own party over the last few weeks on a whole range of issues (HS2; Northern powerhouse; Owen Paterson; care costs etc). I think the deliberate leaking of a letter that should obviously have remained confidential was aimed at shoring up his position within his party and heading off a leadership challenge.

As Scara pointed out on another thread, it’s the responsibility of the U.K. to protect its borders; not the French. Johnson promised Brexit would deliver control of our borders and waters and it patently hasn’t. Meanwhile Farage hovers in the background waiting to take advantage and make yet another come back.

Johnson’s biggest fear must be that the French actually do what they are accused of. Open their borders and wave the immigrants through. And say “Not our problem. It’s up to the U.K. to protect their borders. Now get on with it”.

Macron would be utterly irresponsible to do that, but does anyone doubt he wouldn’t if his re-election depended on it?

Not talking to the French is definitely not going to achieve anything and we will pay the consequences next year

Think you’ve been reading the Daily Mail again!

That’s the trouble, Johnson thinks about appeasing his own Parliamentary Party than actually trying to fix things or repair relations with other countries. The Tory Party has always been about the tail wagging the dog, probably true of Labour too with a certain section/group/block having just a little bit too much power when it comes to Parliamentary voting intentions.

No sense of self awareness there. You're completely blaming the French. To solve this requires joint effort.

The French should remember who saved them from the German dictatorship. The UK sacrificed hundreds of thousands of soldiers in defence of their country. That's a sacrifice that should never be forgotten, no matter what 🇬🇧

Johnson is a blundering buffoon. Macron is desperately trying to impress French voters by acting the hardman.
I see the mayor of Callais has called out Macron for failing to deal with the immigrant crisis despite repeated requests.
So Johnson and Macron. Two total idiots trying to prove a point and acting like petulant children whilst human lives are lost.

So true. He blames so easily. Deflecting his own failings.

They're both to blame Wiz. But you're wrong about the joint effort. It's a Europe wide problem, if not a global problem, not just a France/UK problem. Those immigrants have passed through quite a few other countries before they reached the French coast. I know it's not an easy problem to solve. But I just wish these so called leaders would at least try and come up with a solution.

Nothing like a good bashing of the French when your credibility is falling apart in the polls. After all it’s now hard to bash the EU.

Two different things there. 1. The French are totally and solely responsible for people leaving France in boats.
2. To resolve the migrant problem requires joint effort

It was in defence of our country really, let's not get carried away, we were at war before France was invaded and the alliance was serving the self interest of all parties.

Only the French could build something so militarily useless as the Maginot Line.

My in-laws are French and I've just helped them move back to the North West, and they say similar about Macron.
He's not so popular either and he was previously using the fishing issue to try to gain popularity.
There is a concern in France about the residents of Calais, who are apparently being constantly hassled by desperate refugees (who don't seem to receive much/any aid), and the government are seen to be doing little or nothing about it. The in laws were from the South, so they weren't exactly local to Calais
It seems to me that a serious issue is playing second fiddle to 2 weak leaders, just my opinion.

By joint effort, I meant all governments. Its wider than Europe even.

I agree. Two stupid stupid over privileged men both out of their depth playing petty games with life or death issues.

This with bells on. They are both as bad as each other, more worried about playing to the gallery than protecting their country.

Last time I checked the allies saves the French. You know a multi national force.

Looking at BJ on TV this week he seems to be gradually wilting under the pressure,
Hair getting even more unruly, face getting bloated, shoulders sagging.
How long will he last?

If only if it was so simple. They have 600 police just patrolling the coast . Still impossible to stop all small boats leaving. What would we do if small boats of people were leaving our country to cros to France ?

Pedantic? You were peddling the myth that Britain saved the French. We played a part but without an allied force we wouldn't have saved anyone on our own.
You take life much too seriously mate. The fact is, the French are ungrateful to the UK and choose to forget the many lives that we lost.
Now chill out and enjoy today's game 👍

It's not at all impossible to stop small boats leaving northern France. Drone technology makes that possible. However, that's not the answer. There is a limited number of smuggling gangs and these could be penetrated undercover if France chose to do so instead of the police standing around watching the boats load up. The boat suppliers could be targeted too. The fact is there's no will to do any of that.

How many 'civilised' countries have the 'boat people' passed through to get to the Channel?
Why have they not taken refuge in one of these countries?
They all think we are a soft touch.
It's time to show them we're not.
Ship them back to the French shore and leave them there.
This may sound heartless, but it's got to stop sometime, like NOW.

That's utter bullshit

Nobody is happy to put up with it. However the solution is to provide a safe route to asylum.
The majority of asylum claimants have their claims upheld.
They should not be having to risk their lives to reach UK soil before they can claim asylum.
And before anyone repeats the lies yet again- There is no requirement in International law to seek asylum in the first safe country. Refugees are entitled to claim asylum in any country they wish to.

So you're just content to just let it happen?
With the occasional catastrophe happening.
Like 27 dead in one 'boat'.
We should process papers in France so genuine asylum seekers can come without having to endure the treacherous channel journey. As for us being a soft touch, it's a complete myth. After bombing the middle east we have helped displace 80m people. Some of these people worked for us in Afghanistan, interpretators etc you know the ones we did a runner from and left them high and dry. Instead of blaming people at the bottom of the pile why not turn your aim at the politicians who awarded PPE contracts to mates (tax payers money) or a system that allowed the speaker of the house claim 7k on decorating his flat in London. Read the attached link to learn about what really happens rather than the Priti Patel/Daily Mail version.
