Unhealthiest place is... take a guess...

More lazy journalism, they give it to us around three times a year.

There’s literally nothing in Wokingham barring a trading estate with a few tech firms and one pub.
Do people actually live there?

We know Blackpool has issues but the same is in every town and city. I know a lot of these things where they include crimes etc are skewed by over 18 million visitors.

Yes also people from outside have brought issues. Still not as bad as these things ever make out 🙄

Blackpool always come way down these sort of lists.... most deprived... unhealthiest..etc so why has it been relatively good in terms of CV 19. Through travel... ethnic mix...industries?

The findings are based on a combination of health factors such as dementia, cancer, alcohol misuse and adult obesity. It's nothing to do with the unhealthiest place to live. In fact, it's to do with poverty, poor healthcare, poor diet and alcoholism. A seaside town with no industrial and manufacturing and minimal vehicle pollution can never be an unhealthy place to live. I mean is it less healthy for a person of certain means to live in Blackpool or in the middle of Manchester? However, until some money is injected into the town it will always come top of these league tables.

Yes we've seen these "unhealthiest" tables several times over the years. I don't take much notice of them for reasons already posted in this thread.
Strangely I was just thinking this morning, as I looked out to sea from Starr Gate beach whilst walking the dog, how fortunate/happy I am to live here.

And I 've never heard of Wokingham.

It's ever since the Sainted Margaret allowed the transfer of benefit recipients between boroughs. Before that you lost your benefit if you moved for a period of time. Benefit tourism was the final nail in the downturn of the British holiday industry.

F**ks me right off when I read regular "surveys/findings/indices" criticising what is and always will be one of the most wonderful places on Earth.
Fresh air, excitement, wonder, adrenaline, hope, happiness, laughter, all contributed to a happy and healthy childhood for me and my siblings.
We'd travel to Blackpool from Carnforth as a family regularly, playing the "Who'll be the first to spot the tower?" game crammed into the Morris Minor.
Rain or shine, we'd enjoy memorable days in the entertainment capital of the northern hemisphere and return home drained, but ecstatic.
Parents still alive in their eighties, brothers and sister all still with us in their fifties.
I know we're luckier than some, bit I feel blessed to be a Blackpoolphile.

Worked all over the country and there's no feeling to compare with the one I still experience when coming "home", even if over 50 years of watching the Seasiders have made me old beyond my years.

You can shove your findings up your arse, ONS.
Sorry, but on the Merlot

Why did they put the miners convalescent home on the seafront?
Answers on a seaside postcard. 😁

Oh, and I was out near the dunes today and I’ve never seen it so busy outside of a Bank Holiday.

It's not the place that makes them unhealthy. It's a combination of poverty, underlying health conditions, poor education, diet, poor housing etc etc.

Blackpool has all those factors in abundance once you get away from the front.

Yeh get all that but why lower CV 19 compared to other deprived areas? There must be factors outside of poverty ?

Less sense of community? Less mingling as a consequence? Blackpool also has the highest non indigenous population in the country.

Less through travel? Less large industry etc.( big employers) Tourism basically furloughed.? Why should non indigenous population be a factor?

I dont know for definite but when a large percentage of the population werent born here they wont have the same social networks so wont mix as much.

I find it a bit odd that instead being angry against the factors that are causing Blackpool to be unhealthy, so many seem angry at the reporting of the findings.
When I see how deprived certain areas of the Fylde Coast are, I don't feel glad I don't live there anymore, I feel angry that nothing is ever done to change things. And from a regional perspective, it's even more disgusting to see such an obvious north/south divide. And yet, there will be politicians who can't understand why certain demographics feel disenfranchised...

Would be interesting to see what kind of figures they would get if the looked at the area outside Central Blackpool - but don’t forget that we have a lot of people who have retired to the area and that older population brings its own problems with age related illness.

As someone else said similar, whenever I’m walking the dog around Norbreck/Anchorsholme/Cleveleys/Rossall/Fleetwood and you look at the views, miles of golden sands or the changing sea the fresh clean air blowing in and our special micro-climate and big skies offering late light and glorious sunsets. It always makes me think how lucky I am to have this on my doorstep and that a 90 minute drive can take me to the Lakes or shorter journeys into the Bowland Fells - I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else really.

I think in some cases Blackpool suffers in certain surveys due to the fact its outgrown its relatively small boundaries. There is no countryside included around the town really, bar near queesnsway, its all different areas then like fylde or wyre, in a lot of towns these areas are included in their town and figures and are probably more affluent than right in the urban centres.

Might not make a huge difference but can possibly make a slight difference to offset certain figures.

I bet they take into account the amount of fast food outlets and licensed premises but not taking into account most are shut for a few months a year and we have millions of vistors. Take no notice.

I received a letter frank stamped "House of Commons" from Scott Benton last week (I do hope many others received the same letter) regarding the general state the residential areas of South Shore have turned into. This letter was directed at Blackpool Council regarding the state the pavements are in i.e weeds growing (up to 5ft in places) broken bottles strewn all over the place, litter, dog shat etc.

All his observations were honest reflections of some areas in South Shore well away from the tourist haunts.

He was promising to inform our local council that this is not acceptable and things must change.

I do hope his words and observations carry some weight and shame this council into doing something about it.

I see all this daily when I walk the dog around my area and have twattered Blackpool council many photographs trying to embarrass them myself, but now think they have blocked my interaction with them as I don't get any replies to anything I post (so I've tried but sadly given up)

I did have a rant at Mr Benton after one walk around my area, can't now remember what I put, but it wasn't polite.

I may sound like a right moaning tw4t but I pay all my taxes (for the area I live the council tax is very high for what I get) I've worked it out that an acre of land where I live probably gains the council more tax than an acre in the "wealthy" areas due to the amount of houses present (yes if everyone had to pay full council tax)

I have lived in more affluent areas of Blackpool (wealthy areas) and I wasn't tripping over broken bottles or hacking my way through overgrown pavements while skipping over dog turds and kicking litter away, I just wanted parity for my area (not going to happen)

Some of us do care but that care turns into resentment and anger which our council are only too happy to ignore or block.

I now don't care and am moving to Cleveleys as soon as we sell. I know it's is far from utopia but it certainly can't be worse than my area of South Shore.

This was a 5am rant, apologies to anyone who it might bother.

BBC Website today has a story about how tourist destinations and economies have been desolated by COVID - lots about that there London but typically nothing about the Countries favourite holiday destination - only when it suits ‘em eh!

Pure deflection from his Party's general ideological battle against councils. Underfund and then blame them. Scott Benton can literally go fuck himself and his Confederate Flag.
