Vaccine - real world results

It seems that the "real world" data is starting to come in: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56153600

The first results of the UK vaccination programme suggests it is having a "spectacular" impact on preventing serious illness.

Research led by Public Health Scotland found in the fourth week after the first dose, hospitalisations were reduced by 85% and 94% for the Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs respectively.

Interesting that the Ox/AZ vaccine appears to be performing better than Pfizer despite the trials data appearing to suggest the opposite (likely due to differences in trials design).

Edit:

Thinking about it, the differences in effect could be a result of Pfizer being approved and rolled out a few weeks before Ox/AZ, this meaning that it's over-represented in the most vulnerable groups and thus more likely to have severe disease.

It's all good news, but I see that Germany has dug itself into a big hole. After the German government and media went out of their way to dismiss the AstraZenica drug as ineffective and after the government banned over 65s from being vaccinated, it has been revealed that just 150,000 of the 1.5 million doses of the Oxford-produced jab have been used. It was claimed that only 200 people turned up for one of the 3,800 daily vaccinations at the Tegel centre in Berlin, which uses only the AstraZeneca vaccine, mainly due to the sustained period of derogatory briefings against it.

Now the German government has urged citizens to receive the vaccine to get the country’s rollout back on track. They announced that the vaccine from AstraZeneca is safe and highly effective.

Yep, interesting article in the Telegraph: Costs are rising exponentially for Europe's disinformation war on vaccine science

Europe has succumbed to the nocebo effect. If people are primed to believe that something makes them ill, they discover illness. It is the reverse placebo.

Tens of millions have received the AstraZeneca jab in the UK and India without meaningful side-effects beyond minor - and desirable - signs of an immune reaction. Yet frontline health workers in Germany, Austria, France, and Spain have convinced themselves that it is doing them real harm, and that it is also ineffective.

I have had the Pfizer vaccine but will be very pleased if it is shown that the Astra Zenica vaccine is equally or more effective to underline how those of little faith ,our beloved European neighbours (eg The French Germans and Italians to name just a few) are left with egg on their faces looking rather incompetent and foolish but ultimately we need them all to wake up and rid the world of this virus as far as is possible.

This needs checking....

From memory when the results came out for the three vaccines that have been approved, ONLY the Oxford vaccine included people who had zero symptoms - but tested positive.

I am pretty sure Pfizer and Moderna only counted people with symptoms therefore their results were always going to look better.

That said, if this was the case I am sure the media would have picked up on it - but who knows???

The board’s resident anti government/ Tory posters move into overdrive trawling their media feeds......😁

However, Mrs von der Leyen defended the Commission's oversights in procuring vaccines and the crucial delays in rolling them out and insisted that "in the end we got it right".

Doubt it, the media haven't covered themselves in glory during the pandemic with sections of it continuing the Brexit fight by proxy and doing everything in their power to undermine the government, usually with falsehoods or otherwise misleading material, their fact checking and understanding of the issues seems to have been woefully lacking.

For example, our death rate is widely reported as "the worst in the world" or similar, but when you look at excess deaths we're middle of the pack, but do any of the media mention that when comparing deaths between countries you need to add maybe 50% for Italy, 30% for Spain, 25% for the USA and 50% - 100%+ for some of the Eastern European countries, of course they don't, they want to feed us a constant stream of "the government has f***ed up" and anything that contradicts that narrative is suppressed.

PM says PHE data shows one dose of Pfizer give at least 75% protection, Ox/AZ looking good but too early to draw firm conclusions.
