Interesting thread on what Bolton fans are saying about the game this Saturday.
I like the line "we rarely perform in front of a big crowd"

I watched them last night against Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury hardly had a shot all game. Truly dreadful team.

Bolton looked tidy on the ball but they don’t half faff about it on the edge of the area. If Norburn is fit I fancy us

If that is the opposition area then it is better than our faffing about on the edge of our own area.

THERE are some really interesting comments lower down. we have beaten pne wigan blackpool burnley blackburn for ages. lol . well pal it aint starting Sat.. Almost signed my self in . thought better of it. Some respect though . they think we are a dangerous side .

In the minds of some Wanderers fans, there is an element of "local rivalry" involved in the fixture - I've even heard the word "derby" being bandied about - which is weird as there is 40 miles between our towns and there must be 10 or 12 other teams nearer to us than you guys.
Even Halifax and Huddersfield are nearer to Bolton than Blackpool and they're not even in Lancashire.

OK there's a lot of history but I think that at the back of most Wanderers fans mind is that since we started our comeback from oblivion as a club we've done well but have struggled against the better teams in the league. We squeaked promotion from L2 and have got closer to the top in two consecutive L1 seasons but our downfall has been points dropped against top 10 teams - and that's you as you've been decent this season in the bits I've seen.

We're nervous - and that's not been helped by our team who are brilliant and disastrous all in the course of a single game - we just don't know what to expect. Overall we're doing well but none of it has been plain sailing or an easy ride. We can only dream of the idea of "a comfortable win" because they scare the hell out of us every game. Supporting the Wanderers ATM is like a season ticket on the Big One - a thriller.

For me, it's "a must win" game for a number of reasons, not least of which is showing that we've progressed from last season and can handle the pressure of playing quality opposition - but of course we have our share of idiots who have insecurity/ego-related reasons for wanting to win.
The club has handed out over 50 lifetime bans to troublemakers in the last 2 years and that's helped our progress towards being a community club with more kids and families attending - but there are still a few dickheads out there and I wouldn't take the opinions they express as being representative of the current BWFC fanbase which has changed beyond recognition under the new management.

Interesting that they're actually describing it as a derby. Most Bolton fans I encounter play it down, for context most consider United their main rival which says everything..

Also, what is "that fateful day"? surely not the 53 FA Cup final, is it when we stopped them getting promoted?

It's a derby of sorts. Like some of their fans say, we're taking 4k and it's 35 mins away.

It's weird this "derby" thing. Over the years, our have been Rovers, Bury etc - even Manure in the eyes of some - and yours have been Preston and latterly Fleetwood? - and yet Wigan fans see us as derby rivals and TBH we never really considered them as having a football team until the 80s and even then they were crap. Most west Wiganers were Wanderers fans and half of those who died in the Burnden disaster came from the Wigan area. We have far more history with you than we'll ever have with them and there are other parallels - we had Anderson and you had Oyston for example. I guess derby rivalries change over the years - maybe it's a generational thing?
Ultimately it's three points at stake IMO - can't be arsed with "bragging rights".

Fleetwood is only a derby in the eyes of the Cods it’s just another game to us a bit like your lot with Wigan. An awful lot of Cod fans were Seasiders until they rose through the football ranks.

Fleetwood see us as a derby but we genuinely don’t care about them.
Preston is number one then for me it’s Bolton then Burnley then rovers then wigan.

If they don’t play well in front of big crowds then wait till they see us, can’t remember the last time we took a big following and won, feels a long time

All clubs have idiots and dickheads who are hellbent on spoiling match days, we're blessed with a few thats for sure!

If Bolton faff around at the back, is either team actually going to cross halfway? We could just agree 5 minute periods of possession each
we could re create the Disgrace of Gijon when austria and germany played out a draw to both progress in 1982 ..

Google Maps has Horwich to Huddersfield 37 miles, Horwich to Blackpool 34.

A lot of Bolton fans hate it when the back three put their foot on the ball and stop the game but to me it makes sense to wait for the forwards to close down otherwise a pass forward just means those receiving it are outnumbered.

Most see either you or Burnley as our 2nd biggest game behind Preston.

The murder in the 70s obviously contributes to a hatred towards you lot that might not necessarily be reciprocal, I've even seen some Blackpool fans say they have you more than Preston.

WHAT price a Wembley play off final . Blackpool V Bolton in 2024. Not impossible. WOW . that would be something special. JEEZ dont know if my 64 old tick tock could manage it. But I would love to see a Lancs play off at Wembers. Its nip and tuck at the moment. Or better still a two legged shoot out. Winner gets to Wembers. And then we or they could have Lancastrian bragging rights. Apart from this billy bollocks Greater Manchester crap. Bring back Lancashire. UTMP.

Wish he'd have gone on to explain what our style of play is as it's a mystery to me!
Well JerryYatesShirt I don’t think it’s that much of a mystery at all.

We usually play a 3-5-2 formation with attacking wing backs and usually 1 midfielder adopting the 10 role. Our style seems to be trying to break teams down through sustained periods of possession where we wait for the right moment to punish any lapse in concentration. However, we struggled to do that at times earlier on in the season due to lack of quality/confidence at times as well as tending to be TOO patient (you could say too cautious). That led to a lot of fans writing this particular approach off after 5 games.

However, we’ve seen a marked improvement in individual performances, chance creation, and goal output as the season has progressed, scoring in 11 consecutive games and having one of the league’s top scorers. The players seem to be adapting to the system and style of play well and hopefully we’ll continue to improve.

A bit less stubbornness in squad selection from the manager and a bit more patience from the fanbase would definitely facilitate this continued improvement.

Could happen. We were lucky enough to go last season in the pizza Cup final - 80k fans on in the beautiful sunshine and a superb day out, especially as we murdered Argyle and played really well. I've had some mixed experiences at "the new Wembley", the worst being when we got battered 5 nil by Stoke, but the whole Wembley Way build up thing is mint these days.
Totally agree with the Greater Manchester/Greater Merseyside thing and the boundary changes that came with it being bollocks. Always Lancashire.

Bolton one of the few clubs with no real local derby despite loads of ‘local’ clubs. Every other local club seems to have latched onto a team they hate more. Something they share with Wigan. As such they should simply hate each other.

been twice. 2010 and 2012. Twenty twelve was awful. the whole day felt flat. got done by west ham in the Championship play off final. and fighting around the concourses. just wanted to get home ASAP. But win and its the best place on earth. CARDIFF was much kinder to BLACKPOOL . 2001 2002 AND 2004 . ldv vans and 2001 third division final. And i much preferred it as a venue.

Wanky Wanderers were THE Derby back in 1976 when I first started going to Bloomfield Rd on a regular basis. Billy Ronson's shot squeezing under McDonough to give us a 1-0 win. Two very good teams battling to get back into the top tier of English football. Unfortunately, we missed out and sold all our best players and the rest is history! I am sure Evo will have them fired up for this one!

Loving the pedantry and your commitment to do the research.
As Horwich is the most westerly suburb of Bolton Metropolitan Borough, how far is it to Anchorsholme?
Well it's where your ground is. In fairness, you're not the only one in denial. There's a sign in Farnworth that says "Welcome to Bolton, home of Bolton Wanderers" so even the council are stuck in the past.

I was in their hospitality for the Premier League fixture as a friend of mine who had no interest in football had been given 2 hospitality tickets by his Bolton based employer and knowing I am Tangerine, he invited me to join him

It was interesting to say the least

I take it geography wasn’t your favourite subject at school.
It’s 58 miles from Bolton to Huddersfield and 36 miles Halifax to Bolton. If you go from ground to ground it is only 26 miles between Bloomfield Road and Middlebrook. So from that aspect it could be a local derby.

You could similarly be describing us as we can play both brilliantly and disastrously in a single game Our attack is usually limited to one half however we have scored as many goals this season as leader’s Portsmouth. That is then negated by the fact our defence has let in the same as bottom table Should on paper be an exciting game and looking forward to it 3-3
