Wales To Go Into Lockdown From Friday

For me Ireland has done the tight thing, lockdown for six weeks so that Christmas can be a boom time for business and families

Totally disagree for six weeks your basically wiping out the whole of November where people start spending in the shops for Christmas you'd kill the already very fragile High street.
If you had a shop for example what stock would you get in with only 4 weeks to sell with no guarantee's that people had bought online by then.
The only boom would be for pubs and when the virus rates increase we'd all be moaning that they should shut.

No if you want to cause damage for Christmas with many businesses already on the brink shut their doors for 6 weeks.
We have to learn to live with this virus not constantly shutting as already proven lockdowns don't work.

I would prefer what they are doing in Wales, a 17-day short sharp shock than what is happening with tier 3.

I think you over-estimate the likely effectiveness of these short lockdowns.

There is some tentative evidence that the outbreak is starting to level off, at least in England, the case numbers aren't leading to anything like the number of hospitalisations or deaths we saw in March/April.

A national lockdown at this stage would appear to be both premature and an over-reaction.

Not really a lockdown here the majority of our retail is open. I'm in the shoe industry and we are only staying open cus we sell steel toe cap boots

Leeds numbers have declined from around 580 a couple of weeks ago to around 370. Other cities are showing similar including areas of Merseyside.

Wales doesnt have the population density of England so not going to get hit as hard. Same can be said for Scotland & Ireland.

However with winter around the corner they have probably decided it is prudent to try & keep numbers as low as possible so their NHS trusts can handle other things and hopefully avoid being rammed with Covid.
Some people just look at death stats, it can be a barometer but many more people need hospital care that those who unfortunately dont pull through. this takes up beds & resources and every Covid patient presenting is an issue for the NHS.

I was talking about the economic effects of Tier 3 versus a short lockdown. As far as effectiveness against the virus goes I don't pretend to know enough about disease control to know what will and won't work. I just know that they are both untested at the moment.
